Remix Mini is an Android-powered desktop for just $20

remix-mini-1

Back in January we first learned about the Jade Ultra Remix tablet, a new Android device designed with productivity in mind. Shortly after this, the startup launched a Kickstarter campaign pricing the Tegra 4-powered device at just $39. The catch was that early backers would get a significant discount over the final retail price in exchange for helping test out the new device and its custom Android OS.

Fast-forwarding to today, Jade is now preparing to take its Android-based Remix OS to a new product category, with the creation the Remix Mini. The Remix Mini is very similar in size (at 4.9 x 3.5 x 1-inches) and concept to Google’s Chromebox, though the box trades out Chrome OS in favor of Remix’s unique UI. What makes Remix OS stand out from a typical Android experience is the presence of desktop-class features like a dedicated taskbar, a built-in file manager, multiple window support, and more. In many ways, the end result is an OS that looks a lot like Chrome OS but has full Android app support and features baked right in.

remix-mini-with-monitor

As for the Remix Mini’s hardware? Jade is aiming for a much lower-end experience this time around, offering an unnamed quad-core 1.5GHz chip with 1GB RAM, 8GB eMMC storage, a H.265 FHD hardware decoder, Bluetooth 4.0, and HDMI 1.4. Jade hopes the Remix Mini will offer up an ultra-affordable basic desktop experience for families and students on a budget, with a starting price of just $20 for Kickstarter backers. Final retail units will also be aggressively priced, with an anticipated price tag of less than $30.

For those that have an aging desktop lying around, this could be a great way of modernizing your setup while utilizing your existing peripheral like your keyboard, mouse, and monitor. The Kickstarter campaign for the Remix Mini should be going live “soon”, so we’ll be sure to update you as soon as we learn more.

Show Press Release
June 23, 2015 (Beijing) – In the mid-2000’s an inspirational project wanted to place a laptop in every child’s
hands at the targeted price of $100 per unit. Now, Jide Technology, innovators of Remix OS based on
Android, is adopting the spirit of that movement and trying to get a Remix Mini – a fully functional Android
PC – into everyone’s hands. To realize this ambition, their first step is to run another Kickstarter campaign
where every backer receives a Remix Mini that will run Remix OS (based on Android 5.0). Their lowest
starting tier is $20.
If some of this sounds familiar, it’s because Jide ran a successful Kickstarter campaign earlier this year that
concluded at the end of April in which every backer was shipped a Remix ultra-tablet running Remix OS. By
mid-May, they had already shipped their hardware to their backers – a truly impressive feat for a Kickstarter
project. “Our first Kickstarter was about finding a community of users to help us make better products,”
explained Jeremy Chau, CEO of Jide Technology. “This time, we want to positively affect as many people as
possible with those products.”
What is Remix Mini?
The Remix Mini dimensions are 4.9in x 3.5in x 1in and is the most versatile and productive Android PC in
the world. It will connect to any screen, keyboard and mouse you have at home, in school or in the office. It
lets you browse the internet, write emails, watch movies, play Android games, create documents, and run
any Android app you want. The tiny PC fits perfectly at home, school or work.
The Remix Mini runs on Remix OS, a productivity-centric version of Android 5.0. Android is a mobile OS
that was developed predominantly for small screens like smartphones and is the dominant OS in the world.
But small screens have obvious limitations when it comes to data input and content creation. That’s why
people still return to their PCs. What if you could adapt Android to the PC environment by customizing it
with PC features we’re familiar with? That’s what Remix OS is.
By building upon the Android operating system and including common PC features, such as support for
physical keyboards, monitors, and multiple windows, the Remix Mini will be found easy to use by most
people in the world.

An Android PC for Everyone
The Remix Mini carries with it the promise to radically change an individual or a group’s ability to access
modern technology. By bringing down the cost of a fully functional computer, those who couldn’t
previously afford the price of entry into the world of modern computing now have a viable option. After
their Kickstarter campaign, Jide aims to retail the Remix Mini starting at under $30.
Being an Android based PC, Remix Mini also brings down the user learning curve because most people in
the world have had some experience with Android before. Rather than asking laymen to learn how to
operate more technical versions of Linux, Remix OS keeps them within an operating system that children
and elderly alike find intuitive and easy to use. What’s more, while many traditional PC operating systems
are highly vulnerable to malware and viruses, Android isn’t. So, while your traditional PC’s have issues with
security and start to feel slow and bogged down with use, your Android devices generally keep their new
device feel.
“When we started asking ourselves how we could create a PC for everyone, there were two basic things we
knew we had to achieve: make it affordable for everyone who wants one, and make it as easy to use as
possible for people from all walks of life. We’ve been able to keep the cost for the user starting at less than
$30 when we retail after Kickstarter, and Remix OS is based on Android, the most widely used OS in the
world,” said Chau in a recent interview.
With the Remix Mini, Jide Technology believes it has built a game changing Android PC that will bring down
the cost of modern computing to those who want and need it, but couldn’t previously afford it. Its
Kickstarter campaign is set to launch in mid-July. Please check http://www.jide.com for more news and updates
about the Remix Mini, including the time and date of the Kickstarter campaign launch.

Disney Launches ‘Disney GIF’ Keyboard on iOS for Easy GIF Sharing [iOS Blog]

Disney today announced the launch of its own GIF app, called Disney GIF, that will act as a keyboard extension and allow users to share a huge back catalogue of Disney- and Pixar-themed GIFs in Message, email, and various social networks (via TechCrunch). With today’s launch, the app includes over 200 GIFs, with the company promising more to be added as time goes by.

GIFs ready at launch include moments from films like Frozen, The Lion King, and the newly-released Pixar feature Inside Out. The app will also feature content from studios owned under the Disney corporate umbrella, with GIFs from movies like Star Wars and even ABC shows like Scandal and Once Upon a Time.

disney gif
Perhaps taking a cue from the emotion-based Inside Out, the app lets users browse by emotional status, film, or see what’s currently trending with users around the world. Although the app is free to download, anyone interested in more premium content from the popular film Frozen can put down $0.99 for one of two themed packs from the animated musical.

The move is an interesting one, especially considering the rejection of app developer Matt Cheetham’s app GIF Finder earlier in the year, due to the fact that it “includes content or features that resemble various well-known, third-party marks, including Disney characters.” Although the app’s rejection was “largely due” to other entertainment properties, Disney’s desire to be included in the meme- and GIF-generating world, and still own complete control over the output, makes the debut of Disney GIF more understandable.

Disney GIF can be downloaded from the App Store for free. [Direct Link]

Apple Obtains Touch ID-Related Patents From Biometric Security Firm Privaris

iPhone 6 Touch IDApple has been working to acquire the intellectual property assets of Charlottesville, Virginia-based biometric security firm Privaris, according to CNN. Privaris recently transferred 26 of its 31 patents to the iPhone maker, including 4 patents in December 2012 and dozens more in October 2014.

The patents are primarily related to fingerprint and touchscreen technology that could lead to Touch ID improvements on future devices. Last February, well-informed KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo told investors that the next iPhone will have an improved Touch ID with reduced errors.

“For example, one of Privaris’ patents covers the ability to use a touchscreen and fingerprint reader at the same time. Another invention of Privaris’ could allow you to open a door with your iPhone by scanning your fingerprint and holding your phone up to a reader, similar to how you pay for items with Apple Pay.”

While the transferred patents have fueled acquisition rumors, the Privaris website has not been updated since 2010 and seemingly none of the company’s senior executives or other employees have updated their LinkedIn profiles with positions at Apple.

Accordingly, it is more likely that Privaris has scaled down or went out of business and Apple has acquired the company’s patent portfolio and other intellectual property. However, the operational status of the company cannot be confirmed.

Privaris, which reportedly raised $29 million in funding, developed a lineup of PlusID personal biometric devices to access computers, networks, websites, software, VPNs, secured printers and online apps.

The company has also offered several other products and services related to access control systems, fingerprint authentication, biometric computer security, biometric security software and access cards, all technologies that fall within the realm of Touch ID.

Fruit scraps and algae: It’s what’s for dinner

Supercomputers are dreaming up crazy new ways to cook the food that we have today, but will we eat the same things in the future? For instance, when news of California’s drought began to hit, people wondered if switching to a diet rich in insects would be the only way to survive. A variety of factors, most notably the face you pulled when someone suggests insects in place of a McCheeseburger, was why that idea crashed and burned. So what sort of food will we be eating in our resource constrained, population-heavy future, aside from, you know, people? Here’s two companies exhibiting at Hello Tomorrow in Paris that have very different ideas on the snacks of 2020.

Making bad food, better

Did you know that in some parts of northern Mexico, the hamburger buns and muffins are, apparently, significantly healthier and better for the environment than normal? That’s because some of the eggs, butter and oil that would have ordinarily gone into the mix has been replaced with the residue from a smoothie factory, and nobody noticed. It’s the confession given to me by Luis Flavio Siller Rodriguez, the co-founder of EatLimmo, a Mexican start-up that has one simple, crazy aim: to make bad food good for us.

Sounding far too good to be true, the company actually uses the junked parts of mangos, guavas and avocados that are discarded by the smoothie and frozen fruit industry. That’s not to say that you’re eating floor scrapings, since all of this stuff is processed with as much effort as the stuff you wind up buying from Whole Foods anyway. Rather than being sold off cheap for animal feed, EatLimmo has developed a way to turn this material into a bulking agent for baked goods. So clever bakers can swap out some of that fat for a far cheaper and healthier alternative. In addition to being vastly cheaper, it’s also much better for the environment, since one kg of (let’s call it) Limmo Powder (and 5kg water) is the equivalent to 6kg of egg mixture.

The creators of EatLimmo with a bag of their raw product

In terms of the health benefits, lets take the example of a 55 gram cupcake: with Limmo Powder, it’s apparently packing 55 fewer calories, 8 percent more dietary fiber and between 4 and 5 grams less fat. It all started with other co-founder Enrique Gonzalez was diagnosed with diabetes and started to take an interest in the food that he was eating. Unfortunately, like a lot of us who have tried to become fitter and healthier, he simply couldn’t resist the allure of processed food. So, instead, he decided to see if he couldn’t make the so-called naughty stuff better for him.

If Limmo is as good as it claims, then why is it not a brand-name that we can all clamor for in Whole Foods? Rodriguez’s answer has two parts: firstly, the Mexican bakers that they’re working with don’t make much of a fuss over health benefits. They’re primarily concerned with cost, so there’s no interest in promoting it. Secondly, there’s a lot of people at the “bottom of the pyramid” who can only afford mass-produced, cheap food which includes a lot of baked goods. In essence, if he’d taken his ingredient to Whole Foods, then the only people who would have gotten the benefit would be middle and upper class citizens who can already afford to eat well, which would do “a lot less good.”

So, how does it taste? I sampled the Limmo Powder cupcake you can see in the picture above and, if I’m honest, it tasted… fine. I certainly wouldn’t have believed that the cupcake I was eating contained powdered mango, avocado and guava peel instead of eggs, butter and oil. In fact, while you could probably tell that something was off about it, my food eater’s brain was telling me that the baker had run out of white sugar and had opted for brown to finish out the recipe. I would imagine that, when combined with a greasy double burger or some frosting, it’d be virtually indistinguishable from the real thing. Which, of course, is the point.

A Fist Full of Algae

Algama is a French company that recently launched Springwave, a drink that uses Spirulina sourced from colonies of microalgae. That’s only the first step on a long road of algae-based foods that the firm is planning to produce, which is what it’s been showing off here. The outfit has cooked up these weird-looking cubes that combine algae with fruits to create high-energy foodstuffs, of which the prototypes were on show.

They’re intended for fitness enthusiasts, with one block of this stuff meant to replace the normal MAXX ENERGY protein bar that they’d normally chow down before a workout. It’s packed full of various vitamins, including heavy quantities of B1, B2, protein and, of course, Spirulina. It’s hardly innovative, since added Spirulina is common in plenty of health drinks in the US, as are algae-based foodstuffs. Hell, during our Cooking With Watson experiment we made carrot pearls out of agar, a vegan-friendly gelatinizing agent made from algae.

In the picture above, the weird looking gelatinous cubes are made of algae mixed with raspberry and pear. The other more normal-looking blocks in the background is an algae cereal bar that’s been infused with apricot. It might surprise you to learn that the weirder of the two actually tastes better. In fact, if you’ve ever sunk your teeth into a block of raw Jell-O then you’ll know exactly what it tastes like, albeit with a far grittier texture. The cereal bar, meanwhile, is an odd mix of sweet and sour flavors that, if I’m honest, just didn’t do it for me.

I’d put a poll down here asking which one of these two you’d rather eat, but I’d wager that plenty of you have started driving south to Mexico in the hope of buying a carload of “healthy” cupcakes instead.

July 4th, Independence Day, the day that the United States freed its self from an alien invasion thanks to Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum in 1996. At least, to those that might not know what it really means anyways. In reality it was the day the United States adopted the Declaration of Independence from Great Britain in 1776. With the Federal holiday comes fireworks, BBQ’s and sales. Leave it to America to commercialize everything. Not that I will complain about a sale. If you are in the market for some great titles from 2K games, now is the time to burn up those Google Opinion Reward credits as they are having a pretty good sale right now.

2K Games

iOS users have a leg up on us for one title, BioShock, at $4.99 vs $9.99. Damn those iOS users. The rest of us can grab Sid Meir’s Civilization Revolution 2 and XCOM: Enemy Within for 50% off. That takes both from $9.99 to $4.99 a piece. Think of it as a two-for-one offer. I am sure Tony Simons will jump on the WWE 2K deal which is $5.99 from $7.99. On the other sports front, NHL 2K is also on sale from $7.99 to $2.99. The company also mentions NBA 2K15 as being on sale from $7.99 to $2.99, but fail to mention what that covers since the game is free. I assume it is an in-app purchase for something.

To grab any, or all, of the titles your best bet will to head to 2K games Google Play Store page, links to a few specific titles below.

Galaxy S6 takes first place in real world speed test, beating out LG’s G4 and the iPhone 6

Samsung_Galaxy_S6_LG_G4_Cameras_01_TAA new massive benchmark from Tom’s Guide has put six of the best performing smartphones on the market against each other to see which phone came out on top in a variety of situations. The tests measured everything from real-life performance and tasks you’d typically do on your smartphone every day, to gaming and other benchmarks. The test measured the Samsung Galaxy S6, LG G4, HTC One M9, Google Nexus 6, Asus Zenfone 2, and Apple iPhone 6, so there’s a very wide variety of hardware here.

What’s definitely going to be great news for Samsung, their Galaxy S6 finished in 1st place a vast majority of the benchmarks, including PDF loading times, gaming performance, WiFi speed, and a handful of benchmarks. This can probably be attributed to Samsung’s own zippy Exynos processor, their very fast memory modules, and the insanely fast flash storage they opted to use in the S6. Surprisingly, though, the LG G4 beats out the S6 in camera opening time. Considering how much Samsung mentioned the quick camera shortcut on the home button, you’d think that would have scored better in a benchmark. But hey. props to LG for pulling that off.

The G4 scored 1st in camera opening time, as well as a Basemark OSII Memory test. Interestingly, the G4 pretty typically beat out the Snapdragon 810 powered HTC One M9. Considering the G4 has a higher resolution and only a Snapdragon 808 processor, this is almost irrefutable proof that the 810 has some problems. The only benchmark that the M9 came out ahead in was a 3dMark benchmark.

Another note worth mentioning is how poorly the Nexus 6 runs compared to other devices. It held up fairly well in benchmarks, but in real world tests, it was pretty consistently dead last, beaten by the Zenfone 2 and HTC’s M9. Considering Nexus phone are supposed to run very fast, completely stock versions of Android, that’s more than a little disappointing.

Huawei taking applications for Android 5.1 beta test on the Honor 6 in Europe

honor-club-android-51-beta-test

Huawei seems to be offering a similar program to Motorola’s soak test registration. One hundred customers registered in Huawei’s Honor Club will get to take Android 5.1 for a spin on the Huawei Honor 6 in France, Germany, and the United Kingdom.

Keep in mind that it’s only a beta test, so its bound to be ridden with bugs. Huawei is hoping participants that join the beta test will pro-actively give the Chinese-based company feedback on the firmware update. Interested? Here’s how you can sign up:

“Make sure to send us an email with the subject ”Beta Test Honor 6″, your IMEI number and a short statement why you are the appropriate person for the test to myhonor@hihonor.com. The first 100 applications that convinced us most will be notified by us next week. The application phase will be closed on 30.06 – so hurry up and sign in today!”

After the June 30 closing date, Huawei should begin rolling out the beta test to European customers during the summer. Anyone signing up to get in on the pre-release software?
