T-Mobile will now let you upgrade at any time, thanks to new JUMP! On Demand program

John Legere

Under its new Un-carrier Amped campaign, T-Mobile has revealed JUMP! On Demand, amping up the way it handles upgrades. No more will customers have to pay $10/month to upgrade six months early. And, customers on the JUMP! program will get to upgrade even earlier.

In other words, upgrading isn’t going to cost you any extra money outside of your monthly phone payment bill. JUMP! On Demand will also let you upgrade your device up to three times a year, letting you always have the most recent flagship in your pocket.

The exciting element of JUMP! On Demand is that it is at no extra cost to the consumer–no upgrade fees, no higher monthly fees, and no taxes. You have total freedom of upgrading your smartphone to the latest device on the market with little to no consequences. T-Mobile will be officially launching the JUMP! On Demand program on June 28.

Click here to view the embedded video.

Keep in mind that isn’t the only new feature as part of its new Un-carrier Amped campaign. There’s plenty more to come, and we can’t wait to see what T-Mobile is doing next.

Are you trading in your device for a new one come June 28?

Press release:

T-Mobile Unveils All-New ‘JUMP! On Demand’ – a Whole New Way to Get a Phone Whenever You Want

T-Mobile kicks off ‘Un-carrier Amped’ — cranking up the volume on its revolutionary Un-carrier moves – by unveiling new ‘JUMP! On Demand’ phone payment plan

Un-carrier introduces the industry’s lowest monthly cost for iPhone 6 – at just $15 a month with trade-in

Bellevue, Washington — June 25, 2015 —Two years ago, T-Mobile [NYSE: TMUS] promised to take on a wireless industry that’d grown too fat to give a damn about its customers. Since then, the Un-carrier™ has eliminated the worst of the carrier abuses with an aggressive drumbeat of industry-rocking moves—and Americans have responded by making T-Mobile America’s fastest growing wireless company. But the company isn’t stopping there. T-Mobile is rolling out a series of epic updates to some of its wildly popular Un-carrier moves this summer and calling it ‘Un-carrier Amped!’ So today, the company kicked things off in a big way by amping up Un-carrier 2.0, its groundbreaking JUMP!® program, and introducing the industry’s lowest monthly cost to get an iPhone 6 when you trade-in your smartphone.

With T-Mobile’s new JUMP! On Demand™, one low monthly phone payment covers the cost of a new smartphone and gives you the freedom to swap it for a new one absolutely anytime you like … at no extra cost. Which means you don’t pay a penny to walk out the door with your new smartphone today–not even sales tax, with qualifying credit. No fees to upgrade whenever you want, no waiting and no worries about paying off your old phone when you upgrade.

“While the carriers are breaking every promise they’ve ever made with their knock-off upgrade programs, we’re racing full speed ahead, making one of our most popular moves even better,” said John Legere, president and CEO of T-Mobile. “JUMP! On Demand is the best way to get a new smartphone whenever you want. Zero out the door. Zero at upgrade. Zero fees. Zero wait. Zero BS.”

Hear more about JUMP! On Demand from Legere in his latest video blog.

Get a New Smartphone When You Want
Nearly half of Americans say they wish their carrier would let them upgrade their smartphone more often. So they’re counting the days until they can get that next new smartphone. With Jump! On Demand, you can get a new smartphone whenever you want at no extra cost.

Here’s how JUMP! On Demand works: Get a new smartphone for zero out of pocket with qualifying credit, and zero sales tax due today, followed by one low monthly payment that includes the cost of that new smartphone and, for free, the ultimate freedom to upgrade whenever you want. When you want a new smartphone, just swap your old phone for a new one. That’s it.

Customers with JUMP! On Demand can upgrade anytime − tomorrow, next week or next month − up to three times a year. Simply bring in the last phone you got with JUMP! On Demand for a quick three-point check-up to ensure it’s in good working order and swap it out for a new smartphone. Which means you could get six brand new phones during the time it’d take to get one upgrade at Verizon.

When you get a smartphone with JUMP! On Demand, your monthly payment is about the same as it would be with regular financing, and there’s no extra $10 monthly program fee.  T-Mobile’s most popular smartphones are available with JUMP! On Demand. See the full list of available smartphones at www.t-mobile.com/jumpondemand in the FAQs.

Existing JUMP! customers can get a new smartphone with JUMP! On Demand the next time they upgrade, and won’t have to pay that extra $10 per month because the ability to upgrade whenever you want is now included in your monthly phone payment.  And, if you still want device insurance (Premium Handset Protection), it only costs $8 per month.

Making It Easier, Not Harder, to Get the Phone You Want … When You Want It
Nearly two years ago, T-Mobile rocked the wireless industry with JUMP! so Americans could upgrade when they want, not when they’re told. JUMP! busted down the barriers to upgrading, and it was a huge hit. Over 10 million people signed on and made the most of JUMP!, upgrading their phones 30% faster than everyone else—every 14 months compared to the industry-average of nearly 20 months.

JUMP! was so disruptive, the carriers were forced to roll out their own knock-off “early upgrade” programs. But they’ve been changing their fine print ever since. Today, carrier customers are forced to wait even longer and pay more to get the phone they want. Verizon Edge customers originally had to pay off 50% of their phone before they could upgrade. Then Verizon upped the payout to 75%. Now, they make you pay off 100% of your phone before you can upgrade—which can take 24 months.

“Verizon’s quietly turned their ‘early upgrade’ program back into a two-year contract – as if nobody’ll notice. And AT&T isn’t much better. These guys just don’t get it,” added Legere. “Customers want more flexibility and freedom not less. So, while they make you wait longer and pay more, we’re changing the game again with JUMP! On Demand.”

Lowest Monthly Cost for iPhone 6
Now, for a limited time, you can get iPhone 6 with 16GB at the industry’s lowest monthly cost of $15 a month with JUMP! On Demand when you trade-in your current smartphone. That’s an unbeatable price the competition just can’t touch. And with JUMP! On Demand, you can easily upgrade to the latest iPhone at any time.

With Jump! On Demand, you make payments on your phone for 18 months.  After 18 months, you can simply turn in your phone with nothing more to pay, or upgrade to your next new phone and start a new plan, or make a final payment and keep your phone.  If you keep your phone and make the final payment, the total of your payments will equal the retail price of the phone.  In addition, customers can pay off their JUMP! On Demand plan at any time by paying the remaining payments in advance, and keep their phone without penalty.

JUMP! On Demand is available in participating T-Mobile stores nationwide starting June 28th.  For more information, visit www.t-mobile.com/jumpondemand. And follow T-Mobile CEO John Legere on Twitter (www.twitter.com/JohnLegere) to see how he’s planning to surprise his followers and celebrate the launch of JUMP! On Demand with them.

T-Mobile’s JUMP! On-Demand program lets customers upgrade phones three times a year

T-Mobile customers will soon be able to walk into its retail stores and upgrade their smartphone with even less of a hassle. What’s more, subscribers will be able to do it more often, too. The Uncarrier’s new #UncarrierAmped initiative builds on its previous JUMP! upgrade policy.

JumpOnDemandTile_20150625090600788

Starting June 28, T-Mobile’s new JUMP! On Demand program lets customers upgrade their devices up to three times per year. What’s more, it no longer costs $10 per month to have the luxury of the upgrade service.

If and when you are ready to trade in your device you’ll take it to T-Mobile who will perform a three-point check to ensure it’s good to go. And, with qualified credit, you’ll be able to walk out with the new device without spending a penny. Yes, that means sales tax, too.

With Jump! On Demand, you make payments on your phone for 18 months. After 18 months, you can simply turn in your phone with nothing more to pay, or upgrade to your next new phone and start a new plan, or make a final payment and keep your phone.

Customers already enrolled in the current JUMP program can trade in toward a new smartphone with JUMP! On Demand for free the next time they process an upgrade. Those of you who want device insurance (Premium Handset Protection), it now only costs $8 per month.

Amazon is giving away $50 worth of apps

Free Amazon apps

Amazon is running another one of its rather tempting app offers this week, with over $50 worth of apps up for grabs completely free.

The free apps range from a selection of games, utility apps and a couple of security based bits of software. While some of the apps were already relatively inexpensive, you can find AVG AntiVirus for Android discounted from $11.99 to $0.00.

The Mirroring360 Airplay Receiver app, which can mirror your iPhone screen to your various Android devices, has also been discounted from $6.99 to free. A similar $6.99 discount is applied to the Exiles sci-fi game too.

These discount deals are Amazon’s regular way of temping Android users to make use of its own version of the app store, which you will need to download before you can install any of the apps in this offer.

The deal is running until the end of July 1st, so there is just under a week to pick up anything that takes your fancy. Here’s the link.

Hands-on: Galaxy S6 Edge gets stock Android-like theme

Samsung-Galaxy-S6-Edge-Material-Design-Theme-aa-(2-of11)

One of the best things about the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge is the new Theme store, which finally brings a long-awaited easy way to change the look and feel of your handset without needing to use a custom ROM or launcher. The Theme store launched with just a handful of themes, including the exclusive Avengers’ themes but a couple of months later, we’re starting to see great third-party themes introduced.

Recently, Samsung accepted many theme producers from XDA Developers for its Theme store which has led to several excellent themes introduced into the store in the past week. Samsung has already rejected two Material Design inspired themes due to licensing issues but finally a new Material Design theme – called Material and published by developer Samer Zayer – is available to download.

I installed it on my Galaxy S6 Edge and here’s my hands-on look and impressions of the theme.

The theme is heavily inspired by Google’s Material Design and the developer has done an exceptional job in replicating the look and feel of Google’s interface. From custom icons to the striped Material wallpaper, the theme is perfect for those who enjoy stock Android but want the additional options added to Android in TouchWiz.

An interesting thing that I’ve found is that the drop down notification menu is pure black, which can be quite jarring at first but becomes very familiar after a few minutes of use. The shortcuts menu is black with white icons and provides a nice contrast to the white notification and black text used with notifications. When in an application, the status bar and notification dock take up the same colour for consistency and overall, the theme is polished and very well made.

One problem with themes is that they often slow your handset down with large graphics and bad code, but the Material theme is far from this; in fact, it feels somewhat faster than TouchWiz as standard. Material Design was meant to bring a standardised design to Android and the Material theme accomplishes this with great effect. As someone who’s not a massive fan of stock Android (but strangely I like Material Design), this theme is perfect as it provides a clean alternative to Samsung’s own interface.

Pharrell, Drake and Elton John will DJ on Apple’s Beats 1

Elton John

With Apple Music launching in less than a week, much of the focus has been on its relationship with artists and the royalties it pays. Thanks to Taylor Swift, it appears to have weathered its minor storm, allowing it to focus on other parts of its upcoming launch. Beats 1, for example, will begin broadcasting on June 30 and will be fronted by ex-Radio 1 DJ Zane Lowe in Los Angeles, Ebro Darden in New York and Julie Adenuga in London. When Apple’s first live radio station was announced, it wasn’t known how the company intended to fill the programming gaps between the three main hosts. However, the New York Times reports that it has lined up a number of high-profile musicians to do their part, with Pharrell Williams, Drake and even Elton John due to present their own shows.

Elton will reportedly host “Elton John’s Rocket Hour,” which will feature an “eclectic mix of old songs and new.” However, there’s no word on what Pharrell or Drake will play during their shows. Drake was on-stage at WWDC 2015 to introduce Music and Pharrell will release Apple Music’s first exclusive song, so it should come as no surprise that they form part of Apple’s wider plans.

In terms of guests, Zane Lowe has confirmed that Eminem will be his first big-name interview. With a mix of live and pre-recorded interviews, Apple hopes that music fans will tune in from all over the globe to discover new music, but also form a closer connection with some of their favorite musicians. Lowe, Darben and Adenuga are the main frontrunners, but Beats 1 could see a huge influx of listeners when any one of the main guest presenters share their tastes with the world.

T-Mobile’s new early upgrade plan lets you swap phones even more

These days, T-Mobile’s not just trying to trip up its far bigger rivals — it’s sprucing up some of its own features, too. The carrier just announced an improved way to handle the early upgrade, and it could work out great if you’re like us and can’t stand holding onto the same phone for too long. The carrier’s new JUMP On demand program works almost exactly like its companion does, save for three big tweaks: First, you can trade in your phone for a new one three times a year instead of two. There doesn’t seem to be a limit on when you can upgrade either (the other version of JUMP makes you wait six months before your first swap). Oh, and the $10 monthly fee T-Mobile used to charge you for the privilege? Kaput. Don’t get too worked up, though: You’ll just have to wait for June 28 to roll around before you can ditch your current device.

The downsides here are few — you’ll lose out on the free phone insurance that was once baked into the compulsory $10 fee, though you can add it yourself for a few bucks less and still pay less than you did before. JUMP On Demand only works for certain smartphones, too, so your choices will be limited compared to the original plan (which still exists, to be clear). The biggest one, of course, is that you’re basically just renting a phone from T-Mobile for however many months before you upgrade again. Sure, you’ll be able to keep the phone if you complete the terms of your contract and pay it off in full, but it’s pretty clear T-Mobile would rather you give your gently used device right back to them (they’ll use ’em as replacements and refurb units).

Then again, if services like Spotify are any indication, the whole notion of people “owning things” might be sort of passé anyway. The way T-Mobile sees it, it doesn’t really matter if someone “owns” a phone as long as they currently have one they like and can ditch it for something better when they stop liking it. That’s a very powerful pull on a consumer’s mind — improvement is just a trip to the store away — and it doesn’t seem likely that T-Mobile will ditch its customer-focused mantra any time soon. Too bad then that the carrier’s rambunctious swagger doesn’t seem to be winning it friends where it might need them the most.

Yahoo’s trying to trick you into switching search engines

Thinking about how much you’d like to try Yahoo’s search engine instead of Google or even Bing? Us neither, but you may end up with it anyway if you’re not careful during your next Java update. CEO Marissa Meyer told shareholders yesterday that Yahoo has teamed with Oracle on a new partnership aimed at getting users to take its search for a spin. If you’re guessing that means it’s “tricking careless users into changing default search engines via a pre-ticked installation box,” then ding! That’s Oracle’s go-to method for installing notorious crapware like the Ask.com toolbar in exchange for, we imagine, considerable sums of money.

Yahoo said that “we have definitely made sure that our onboarding process is one that is highly transparent and gives users choice,” according to the WSJ. Translated, that means “we’re technically asking permission,” but forcing users to opt out is still a highly dubious practice. Of course, Google’s not exactly innocent either, since Adobe’s last Flash install forced many users to opt out if they didn’t want the Chrome browser. Yahoo’s mired in third place in search with just 12.7 percent of the search market, well behind Bing.

While Java would just change your default search provider and not install an app, it’s still a hassle to reset if you didn’t want it. Since it’s hard to avoid Java (almost 90 percent of US computers have it), pay close attention the next time you update, and un-tick the box if you don’t want Yahoo search. If you’re willing to try it, why not just go to Yahoo’s home page? Or, you could just hit Bing, since a large percentage of Yahoo’s search results actually come from Microsoft’s engine.

Public library app Hoopla adds DC comics to its lineup

DC titles have been available digitally for a while. But while some public libraries have carried physical DC titles, you couldn’t check them out digitally. Starting today though, fans of reading comics on glowing screens will be happy to learn that DC comics has partnered with Hoopla to bring some of its titles to the digital version of your public library. At launch, Hoopla users will be able to borrow 25 of DC Entertainment’s top titles including; Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Watchmen, Superman: Earth One, V for Vendetta, Final Crisis and Wonder Woman Vol. 1: Blood. Whether you’re a hardcore comic fan or just want to catch up on some of the best stories DC has ever published, it’s a pretty nice list of graphic novels. Hoopla will add additional titles every week and told Engadget that it will add 200 over the course of the summer. The caveat is that you need a library card and your local library system has to support the Hoopla system and its new e-book and comic offerings.

This is the first time DC has allowed its titles on a digital library system. To get the comics powerhouse on board, Hoopla — the digital arm of media supplier for libraries, Midwest Tape — made sure that its new Action View feature for comics was up to the Superman publisher’s standards. “DC is very guarded how their comic books look,” said Hoopla founder and owner Jeff Jankowski, “we worked very closely with them.”

As for having comics available on Hoopla the same day as they hit your favorite comic book store, don’t hold your breath. DC will be analyzing how their titles perform on Hoopla before going down that road. It’s highly likely that new titles will appear after they have had a chance to be sold via traditional channels, the same way movies appear on Netflix. But that shouldn’t stop you from checking out Alan Moore’s Watchmen right now. Especially if you’ve only seen that horrible horrible movie.
