T-Mobile’s iPhones are getting the ‘blue screen of death’

If you’ve been having problems with your T-Mobile iPhone, you’re not alone. A lot of people have been experiencing random freezes, restarts and (this is not a joke, folks) the dreaded blue screen of death. A lot of people have been airing their complaints on Facebook, Twitter, Reddit and the Apple forums — even one of our own editors had to deal with the issue earlier. There’s no official word yet on what’s going on exactly, but according to MacRumors, it’s been affecting iPhone 5S, iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus devices running iOS 8.1 or 8.3.

Reddit user Geophyzze, who called up T-Mobile, said the company suspects it’s a memory problem and advises subscribers to do a hard reset, clear out old text messages if that doesn’t work, or to do a full factory restore if all else fails. To note, our editor’s iPhone stopped going haywire after he disabled WiFi calling, so definitely try that first before doing a factory restore. We’ve reached out to both T-Mobile and Apple for answers and will update this post once we hear back.

You can now use Messenger without a Facebook account!

developer interview

You may need Messenger to chat on Facebook, but you no longer need Facebook to chat on Messenger. The social network has just announced Messenger will no longer require users to have a Facebook account in order to join the conversation. All they will need to sign up is a phone number.

The news had the whole industry raising their eyebrows today, as the change doesn’t seem to go in line with Facebook’s constant struggle to take over the internet with their social network. What’s going on here?

facebook messenger web

It does make sense in the grand scheme of their operations, though. After all, some of Messenger’s features are only available to Facebook users, such as syncing messages across devices and having access to your Facebook contacts – think of it as an endless trial period of sorts. Giving users this capability will help them draw in more potential Facebook users they could later convince to join the real party.

How to sign up for Messenger without a Facebook account

  1. Download and install the Messenger app from the Google Play Store.
  2. Open the Messenger app.
  3. The Messenger welcome screen will now present you with an option that reads “Not on Facebook?”.
  4. Press on the option and you can then sign up with your name, phone number and a photo.
  5. Start chatting it up!

messenger-no-facebook

This new feature has started rolling out to users in the USA, Canada, Peru and Venezuela, so it’s not exactly for everyone just yet. We are sure this new signup option will continue to expand in due time, so stay put if you are not in one of these markets.

I happen to believe this is a good move by Facebook. Messenger will successfully get people to dip their toes into the platform. After all, it is a great communication tool everyone is using, and in this race all that matters is the user base numbers. Aside from regular messages, Facebook Messenger offers video calls, the ability to send money to friends, voice calls, group chats, stickers and more; all for free.

messenger-video-call-carousel

Not bad, right? Now we can finally get our Facebook-hating friends to stay in touch with us via Messenger! By the way, how many of you are still not using Facebook? Will you download the Messenger app now that you don’t need to sign up to the full social network? Hit the comments and share your thoughts with all of us!

Qi fast charging will allow for charging devices wirelessly at 15 watts

Galaxy Note 4 Wireless Charging Accessories-57

A new announcement from the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) reveals the latest version of their Qi standard. This is especially exciting news to wireless charging enthusiasts who are limited by the technology’s current limitations to charge devices quickly. The new Qi iteration will allow for dramatically reducing the amount of time it takes to charge a device.

This technology’s feature is simply called Qi fast charging, and it will make it possible to charge devices wirelessly at 15 watts. To put that into perspective, current Qi chargers top off at around 5 watts. This means wireless charging speeds will triple, at the least. Of course, given that you have both a supported charger and device.

Galaxy Note 4 Wireless Charging Accessories-39

In fact, this is faster than many cable chargers out there. I just took a quick glance at an iPad charger that can juice up a tablet at 12 watts! Wireless charging at 15 watts is simply out of this world, and it may beat many of your regular, wired charging units.

This news comes only a day after we went in depth about the PMA/A4WP merger, which should bring forth more awareness on the different technologies available and convince device manufacturers to simultaneously support multiple.

Some device makers like Samsung have been adding both PMA and Qi inductive charging capabilities to their handsets, for example. This is a practice more manufacturers could adopt in order to end the disagreements wireless charging organizations currently have. Everyone seems to be pushing their own technologies, and that isn’t good for manufacturers or consumers.

best-wireless-charger-tylt-2

If Qi moves fast and pushes their fast charging technology into the market soon, you can be sure not even PMA and A4WP will stand a chance. They need to counter attack soon, as Qi already has a foot hold on the market as it is.

Full availability details are still under the covers and more information will come in a later announcement. What we do know is only members of the Wireless Power Consortium have access to this new specification. Let’s hope things move quickly – I can’t wait to test this! Are any of you as excited about Qi fast charging as me?

LG launches the LG Band Play with a focus on multimedia

LG posted to their Korean newsroom information about the LG Band Play. This mid–range device wants to be a multimedia powerhouse without the power.

The LG Band Play runs on a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor clocked at 1.2GHz. The Band Play also packs 2 GB of RAM, 16 GB of storage (expandable via microSD), and a 5 inch screen with a 720p resolution (720 x 1280). All of this is powered by a removable 2,300 mAh battery.

The specs clearly aren’t the thing that makes this device interesting. We mentioned that it is geared towards multimedia. You might be wondering “How do you achieve that with those lackluster screen specs?”. I know I sure was when I first heard of this device.

The magic is hidden in the sound system. LG boasts a 1W high powered speaker with enhanced bass which is supposed to deliver loud, rich sound. This was also highlighted as a key feature of the LG G3. Not only are the speakers supposed to be top notch, LG also is shipping the Band Play with a pair of premium QuadBeat 3s. The earbuds that you can see this nice lady wearing.

lg_band_play_earbuds

The Band Play will be running Android 5.1 out of the box. In addition to LG’s rendition of Android 5.1, the Band Play will also have a focus mode. This focus mode is designed to make sure that you stay productive. To achieve this, your phone will be silenced, cellular connection and Wi-Fi will be shut off, and any inbound calls will be automatically declined with a rejection message.

On top of limiting distractions, your LG Band Play will also play music similar to therapy music that will help you stay focused. To me, this sounds more production focused then play focused which is in the name. I personally think it should have been called the “LG Band Work”,  but maybe that is just me.

The price is set at 394,800 KRW or about 355 USD, and will be available in South Korea in two colors, black and white. There is no hints to an international launch as of right now.

Translations of the LG post were done by Pocket NowGSM Arena, and trusty old Google Translate.

Apple Paying 0.2 Cents for Each Song Streamed Free During Apple Music Trial Period

Apple will pay record labels 0.2 cents for each song that customers stream for free during the three-month Apple Music free trial, reports The New York Times. The rate is similar to what Spotify pays out for songs accessed through its free streaming tier and does not include a smaller payment made to music publishers for songwriting rights.

Apple is still working to complete deals with publishers, but a second report from Billboard suggests the company may pay out an additional 0.047 cents per stream for song rights, for a total payment of approximately 0.247 cents for each song an Apple Music user listens to.

applemusic
Though Apple did not initially plan to pay labels and publishers during the three month free trial it’s providing to customers, it reversed course after both a strongly worded letter from Taylor Swift and negotiation difficulties with independent labels who balked at the terms.

The money that Apple is paying per stream during the trial period is significantly less than what rights holders will receive after Apple Music has paying customers, but it appears to have satisfied many indie labels. As of this morning, Apple signed deals with both Beggars Group and Merlin Network, companies that represent more than 20,000 indie labels and distributors.

Apple Music will officially launch next Tuesday in over 100 countries. All customers will receive a free three month trial, after which time a subscription will be required to access the service. Subscription prices vary by country, but in the U.S., an Apple Music subscription costs $9.99 per month for an individual or $14.99 per month for a family of up to 6 users.

Starting with Pioneer and their NEX line of infotainment systems. These systems come with Android Auto compatibility, letting you plug your smartphone to the device to enjoy the full Android Auto experience, while also being compatible with Apple CarPlay.  Three models that are available include the AVIC-8100NEX, the AVIC-7100NEX, and the AVH-4100NEX, priced at $1300, $1100, and $600 respectively.

The most expensive of the lot comes with a capacitive touch screen, that allows for pinch-to-zoom navigation, and 16 GB of storage, with the other two coming with resistive touch systems. All the devices feature 7-inch displays with a 800 x 480 resolution, as well as built-in Bluetooth support for hands-free calling and audio streaming. All units also feature built-in HD Radio, an HDMI input with MHL support, and DVD playback, allowing for a slew of options as far as connectivity is concerned. Finally, all three devices allow for rear seat passengers to enjoy audio or video content on additional rear seat monitors and headphones, even while the front passenger and driver listen to audio from other sources or operate navigation functions simultaneously.

Kenwood

Instead users can just switch the device that is plugged in, allowing for a seamless transition. Both options come with 6.95-inch resistive touch displays with a resolution of 800 x 480. The two units, called the DDX9902S and the DDX9702S are priced at $750 and $700 respectively.

Interview with Chevrolet: Android Auto plans

Plenty of car manufacturers are supporting the Android Auto revolution, but Chevrolet is one of the very few jumping in with both feet. Meanwhile, other vehicle makers are dipping their toes in and releasing one or two models supporting Google’s new vehicle-focused ecosystem.

At Chevy’s special tech event, we were able to take a look at Chevrolet’s plans for the future of Android Auto and its automotive lines in general. Let’s jump right in, shall we?

Getting Android Auto on a new Chevy car

Chevrolet recently announced they would release over 14 models with Android Auto on board, covering most of their popular vehicles. These 2016 models include the Chevy Cruze, Malibu, Camaro, Silverado, Volt, Suburban, Colorado, Tahoe and even the luxurious Corvette, among others.

We were glad to hear Android Auto won’t exactly be an upgrade, in and of itself. The way it was explained to us is that Android Auto will come with certain tiers of the supported models, but you don’t exactly need to pay extra for it. In short: “if it has a 7-inch or 8-inch screen, it is going to have Android Auto”. The first Corvette carrying an Android Auto system is said to be entering production now, and all other models will be releasing over the summer. In other words, Chevy isn’t wasting any time getting these Android Auto-equipped devices into the hands of consumers.

Safety

Of course, a major concern with entertainment platforms like Android Auto is safety. Thankfully, this is something Google and Chevrolet took very seriously when it came to incorporating the tech into Chevy automobiles. For starters, Android Auto is designed specifically for the driving experience, harnessing the capabilities of on-wheel controls and voice actions, so you won’t be taking your eyes off the road very often.

We were told anything on Android Auto can be done in “less than 2 seconds”. I mean, 1-2 seconds is still quite a bit of time when considering the dangers of the road, but it’s faster than what we are used to so far. Plus we trust that you will be responsible about using your Android Auto features. Ultimately, it is a car-tailored experience, so it’s not like you will be checking your Facebook News Feed or anything of the like.

Android-Auto

4G LTE connectivity and prices

We couldn’t forget to touch on data, which is an important factor for all mobile users (so, pretty much everyone). Data can go by so quickly, so we wanted to make this matter clear for our readers.

The representative didn’t tell us too much on the matter, but he did mention plans start at 1 GB for $15, and move up from there. There’s 3 GB plans, 5 GB plans and more. Chevrolet does claim their plans are “very competitive with the market right now”, so you can calculate prices based on that bit of info.

Apple CarPlay vs Android Autoa5rvbxz`

We simply had to drop the bomb on this one. You didn’t think we would leave the premises without asking the question, did you? So – CarPlay vs Android Auto? Here’s what our buddy from Chevy said.

“I have looked at what’s in my pocket, and that’s the superior interface.”

The idea here is that Chevy wants to cater to all customers, and that is why they support both Google’s and Apple’s in-car entertainment platforms. The customer gets to choose, not the car maker. It’s worth noting Android sits on about 80% market share, though it’s hard to say what number of these users will actually end up purchasing a newer Android Auto equipped automobile in the near future.

Wrapping up

Are any of you guys buying a new car soon? If you are going with Chevy, you have plenty of options. Just don’t forget to take a look at our Android Auto review to learn more about the system and how the Hyundai Sonata integrates it. Also be sure to stay to more exciting coverage from our time at the Chevy automotive tech event.

IFTTT’s automation app can watch your Android phone’s battery

IF for Android with a battery recipe

Thanks to a slew of updates, IFTTT’s automation apps just became decidedly more useful — especially if you’re religious about your smartphone’s battery. If for Android now includes a battery channel, so you can tell your phone to perform certain duties depending on your charge state. You can have the app mute your phone as soon as you plug it in, for instance. Also, the existing device channel now works with Bluetooth, music, navigation and WiFi, so you can turn off wireless features when your power is low or get directions to your favorite fishing spot every weekend.

The company’s task-starting Do apps for both Android and iOS are getting tangible upgrades, too. They now handle an unlimited number of instruction sets, offer personalized recommendations and (on Android) give you floating action buttons. And if you’re anxious about the security of IFTTT itself, you’ll be happy to know that the developer has added two-factor authentication so that intruders are less likely to hijack your account. All told, there’s plenty here to keep you (or rather, your devices) busy.

‘Shenmue 3’ creator explains how Sony is helping out

'Shenmue 3'

When the word got out that Shenmue 3 was getting financial help from Sony, not just E3 stage time, some gamers understandably flipped out. Were Yu Suzuki and crew duping fans into supporting a big-budget sequel in the guise of a crowdfunded indie title? Well, you can relax a little — Suzuki has come clean and explained to backers just how Sony and partner Shibuya Productions are involved. On top of an apology for misleading supporters, the developer notes that Sony and Shibuya are helping out with marketing, production and (in Sony’s case) “some publishing.” While he can’t talk about the terms, he’s adamant that your money is going directly to Shenmue‘s development. The other companies are “not seeing a cent” of your pledge, Suzuki says.

The disclosure should help assuage some jittery backers, although it also suggests that crowdfunded game studios still have something to learn about being up front about their financing. Although the teams behind projects like Shenmue 3 and the Castlevania-inspired Bloodstained have been quick to answer questions about outside help, their campaigns aren’t very explicit about why they’d like your money. In situations like these, your contribution mostly helps the designers gauge interest and work on bonus features that wouldn’t otherwise be practical. Those are fine motivations, but they’re seldom as obvious as you might like.

Picasa’s Web Albums work again for some reason

Back in 2013, Picasa users suddenly found themselves being automatically redirected to Google+’s web albums rather than the site they were familiar with. Of course, in light of Google’s subsequent announcement that Google+ Photos would be supplanting the Picasa service as the company’s go-to picture-storage platform, nixing the older Web Albums made sense. Of course, Google once again switched its photo hosting app to just Photos (which doesn’t require a Google+ account) late last month. Now however, fansite Google Operating System reports that the Web Albums page no longer redirects to Google+. What’s more, its search feature appears to work as well (albeit only for your own pictures and videos). So, for now, you can totally go back to using Web Albums if you want. Though given Google’s historically scattershot approach to its photo management sites, who knows how long it’ll stay online this time.
