OmniROM introduces Android 5.1.1 Lollipop nightlies
Popular ROM maker OmniROM has just announced availability for Android 5.1.1 Lollipop nightly builds. The team has been working “diligently” to try and bring the newest version of Android to all their users. They now feel confident with their 5.1.1 codebase and users can start playing around with the popular ROM’s latest versions.
These nightlies are not for everyone just yet, though. The initial rollout only supports a select group of devices, which include the following:

Do you have any of these devices? If so, you can start experimenting the latest Lollipop builds by heading to the download page and grabbing the files. By the way, you will need to do a clean wipe when moving to nightly builds. Otherwise, your device will be boot looping. We don’t want that, right?
What are nightlies?
For those of you who have no idea what we are talking about, nightly builds of a ROM are updates that are released… well, nightly. This means the developer would update the build with all the changes they made that very same day.
The point of nightlies is to allow testers to really experience the ultimate last version of a ROM. This means it will be more stable than previous experimental builds and developers are more likely to get reports on bugs and issues. This would then allow them to more easily move forward in their operations, squishing as many bugs as possible.
Of course, we should also mention that these are by no means stable releases. You are very likely to encounter issues and find the occasional hiccup. Not to mention, the process of continuously flashing a ROM can be a bit intimidating for the light-hearted. Even if you don’t necessarily have to perform a complete wipe every single time. Our advice is that you stick with stable releases if you want a phone to work as perfectly as possible. This is more for the adventurous tinkerers out there.

New HTC phones pass through FCC on way to Verizon
Some new devices from HTC showed up in the FCC database apparently heading to Verizon. According to the filings, both devices are listed as smartphones and they appear to have support for Verizon’s CDMA and LTE bands. The lack of support for 802.11ac Wi-Fi may point to them being budget-oriented devices.
Besides the lack of 802.11ac support, the FCC filing also reveals that one of the devices has two possible configurations for both the LCD screen and the battery, which caused additional testing. HTC also plans to put the FCC label on the battery along with markings for inserting the SIM card implying at least one of the devices will have a removable back cover and likely a removable battery.
No information regarding the operating system was included, so it is not clear whether these will be Android-powered smartphones. They could be destined to become part of Verizon’s Windows phone portfolio.

We’re back after an impromptu break, and while HBO has reloaded on its series (Ballers, Brink, True Detective S2), there’s a lot new this week to look out for. For the creepy sci-fi vibe there are two opportunities with Humans on AMC (you can watch the premiere episode on YouTube) and Mr. Robot on USA. Battlebots is back on ABC and Netflix will even have the season-ending episode of Between so you can binge properly. The other big streaming highlight is Netflix’s Nina Simone documentary, which will arrive Friday morning (unless it gets released early). UK spy agency broke rules when it snooped on civil rights groups
The spies at the UK’s Government Communications Headquarters may swear that they’re obeying the law, but that doesn’t mean that everything they’re doing is completely above-board. The Investigatory Powers Tribunal has determined that GCHQ broke data retention rules when it spied on civil rights groups in Egypt and South Africa. The agency legally intercepted the communications of these two targets, according to the ruling, but it either kept that data longer than it should have (in the Egyptian circumstance) or didn’t follow policies for studying that data (in South Africa).
It’s another victory for advocates who’ve long thought that GCHQ’s practices are questionable. With that said, it won’t carry as much weight as a February decision which maintained that some of the organization’s behavior is illegal. The move doesn’t put GCHQ in legal hot water, and the damage supposedly isn’t significant enough to merit compensation. Also, the verdict shoots down claims from the American Civil Liberties Union, Amnesty International and other groups that came under GCHQ scrutiny. However, the findings reinforce worries that the spy outfit is frequently bending the rules (including its own) in the name of national security — and that people in other countries are paying the price.

Acer Chromebase all-in-one offers solid specs, low price and touch options
Acer continues pushing forward in the Chrome OS market, with their latest addition truly being a first of a kind. The computer manufacturer announced the Acer Chromebase all-in-one (otherwise known as the DC221HQ) in April, but we were left with many doubts then. Today we are getting all the details, including pricing and availability, which is what we really wanted to know.
It is actually one hell of a Chrome OS computer, so let’s dive right into the details and show you what this gadget is all about.

- NVIDIA Tegra K1 quad-core processor
- 4 GB of RAM
- 16 GB of internal storage
- 2 x 3W audio speakers
- HDMI out, USB 3.0, USB 2.0.
- WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0
It may not have an Intel Core i5 on board, but the NVIDIA Tegra K1 and Kepler graphics should handle Chrome OS pretty well. It is a super light-weight and fast platform, after all. The real kicker here is something that wasn’t mentioned in the specs above. This PC can be had with an optional touchscreen!
We are still wondering if this is a form factor people really want, though. Is there really a demand for Chrome OS desktop computers, especially considering one could just dock any Chromebook to a monitor to get the larger screen experience. This is why Chromeboxes and Chromebases haven’t exactly grown at the same rate as Chromebooks.
Will the addition of a touchscreen change this computer’s fate? We can’t say for sure yet, but we did mention price would be a huge factor in this complex equation. To be honest, Acer did strike some rather awesome price points here.

The non-touch version will go for just $329.99, while the multi-touch iteration will cost $100 more at $429.99. Sadly, you can only get the non-touch version this month (June). You will have to wait until July if you want to really get your fingers all over this all-in-one’s screen.
Really – how many of these will sell? I could see them being great for education, libraries and the occasional casual user, but that’s about it. What we can tell you is that it’s definitely the best of its kind right now, so those looking for a solid Chromebase really should look no further.

Dropbox update v3.0 introduces Material Design for the masses
Dropbox is one hell of a service, but they haven’t been the best at keeping up with the times and adopting Material Design, which makes today’s news amazing for Google fans. The Dropbox Android app received an update with Material Design only some weeks ago, but it was exclusive to beta users. Today the company decides to take things to the next level and introduce Google’s design language to the masses.
The new update to the Dropbox app is labeled as version 3.0, and the change in design seems to be the only main improvement. This is one huge change, though. The interface looks much cleaner, and the navigation menu makes it much easier to roam around the application. Not to mention, it’s so much easier to find that floating action button, as opposed to looking all over the app just to upload a photo.

Dropbox’s latest update is currently rolling out to Google Play Store users. I still haven’t seen my update, but it should be coming soon. It took Dropbox way long to get on board with Material Design. It won’t really hurt to wait a bit more. I just find it impressive that we are still worrying about developers adopting Material Design, smack in the middle of 2015.

Video of 20-Year-Old Mac Operating System Running on an Apple Watch [iOS Blog]
As an entire computer that fits on our wrists, the Apple Watch already seems like something out of a science fiction novel, but a new video from software developer Nick Lee demonstrates just how far computing has come in the last two decades.
Lee’s hacked an Apple Watch running watchOS 2 to run a port of a 20-year-old Macintosh OS, System 7.5.5, using the Mini vMac Macintosh emulator.
When System 7.5.5 was released in 1996, it required a full PowerPC-based Mac to run, and in their smallest incarnation, those machines were clunky, heavy, and pretty far from the portable devices that we have now. Today, that same operating system can run on a tiny wrist-worn computer with a 1.3 to 1.7 inch screen.
NASA’s version of ‘Shark Tank’ results in six aviation moonshots
NASA wants to change the way planes fly. As part of a new Convergent Aeronautics Solutions project, the agency’s innovators recently formed teams to pitch their wildest ideas to a jury. Out of the 17 teams that presented their aviation-transforming studies to a panel of NASA managers, six teams secured funding for their research. While the process seems an awful lot like a VC funding round, according to program manager Doug Rohn, no monetary return on the investment is expected. The program is designed to back seemingly improbable ideas that might lead to solutions to the problems that plague aviation.
To qualify, all the ideas had to take form as a technology, tool or process. One of the more bizarre yet ingenious ideas explores the possibility of an aircraft structure doubling as an energy storage system. It would eliminate the need to carry the heavy load of batteries that weighs down a plane in flight. Another idea suggests artificial intelligence for drones that would allow them to think for themselves. The team plans to explore advanced programming to see if unmanned machines can emulate human pilots and alter their own course without any remote intervention. A team also proposed adaptive digital composite aerostructures. Depending on the flight conditions, what if a plane could channel Optimus Prime and transform its shape midair? The project is essentially a feasibility test where failure isn’t frowned upon. In fact it’s expected. But even if one of the shortlisted ideas can push past the limitations of aviation, it just might be worth investing in wild ideas.

Windows 10 testers can keep it for free, with a small catch
Microsoft made headlines last week when it seemingly announced that it would give away a free copy of the new OS to anyone who signed up to test it. Today however, the company has “clarified” that statement to explain that the offer isn’t quite as cut and dry. Windows 7 and 8.1 users are still eligible for a free upgrade on July 29th. However, folks that have installed Windows 10 preview will need to stay signed up for future pre-release updates in order to keep their build’s activation status current. But don’t think you can be slick and just use your current Preview install while opting out of future updates. If you don’t, the build license will eventually expire. So if you want to get a legit version of Windows 10 without paying for it (or one of the previous eligible versions), it looks like your best and only choice is to keep being Microsoft’s guinea pig.
