LG G4 breaks Guinness world record for most consecutive selfies taken

G4-Guinness-World-Record-11-1024x562

The LG G4 is one of the best smartphones around, but did you know it’s good enough to break Guinness world records? They did so on June 13th, when they beat the world record for the “world’s longest selfie relay chain”, smoking past a record that was previously set in the USA.

LG was able to accomplish this with the help of over 2500 people from Mexico’s capital – Mexico City. The event took place last June 13th at the Chapultepec Castle, a historic building which currently serves as the National Museum of History. 746 selfies were taken in a period of two hours, whereas the last record was at 531 with the Galaxy A3 and A5. It’s calculated that LG’s phone took a photo every 10 seconds during this period of time.

This may seem like a meaningless event to some, but it does demonstrate the capabilities the LG G4 has under its arm. This phone happens to sport an awesome 8 MP front-facing camera, which is alleged to be among the best in the market.

LG also touts that the G4 was able to go through this whole process without needing a recharge or a battery swap. In fact, they claim the device still had plenty of energy to go around at the end, but they “ran out of people”. Seems odd for a city with one of the highest population margins in the world, housing about 9 million inhabitants. That’s still an accomplishment, though. I am nearly sure the Samsung Galaxy S6 would have died (this thing dies so fast!)

The phone sure isn’t perfect, but we didn’t have many bad things to say about it in our LG G4 review. It’s really no wonder LG decided to use this phone to accomplish such feat. Which phone will beat the LG G4’s record? We can only wait and see, but maybe we can make some speculations in the comments below!

Kenyan slums dispense clean drinking water through ATMs

World Water Day Photo Essay

In many parts of Kenya’s capital of Nairobi, clean water is difficult to come by. That often means taking your chances with dysentery from an impure source, or pay through the nose from a “water vendor.” But the BBC reports that thanks to a partnership between the African nation and Danish water company Grundfos, that’s about to change. The Nairobi City Water and Sewerage company has just opened four ATM-like kiosks that will dispense 20 liters of potable water for just half a Kenya shilling (about half a US penny). That’s 100 times less expensive than what vendors charge for the same amount. Residents simply have to swipe a smart card and put a jug under the spigot, and the access card balances can be refilled either at the kiosk itself or via mobile phone.

The plan is not new — it’s actually been in use in rural Kenya for a while now — but it’s thought to be the first time such a distribution scheme has been tried in an urban city center. Grundfos hopes that this public-private partnership will eventually spread to other developing nations, eventually delivering water to the estimated 700 million people worldwide who don’t have access.

Now you can try Watson’s freaky-deaky recipes for yourself

SONY DSC

If you think that a supercomputer can do a better job of inventing new meals than, say, Gordon Ramsey, then today’s your lucky day. IBM is opening up its Chef Watson web app to the world, enabling open-minded foodies to make outlandish food combinations for dinner parties with people you’re not fussed about pleasing. It’s been almost a year since IBM teamed up with Bon Appetit magazine to begin working on the app, and has spent the last eleven months testing it out with a wide variety of willing cooks. In addition to being able to brag about being smart enough to make an Old Fashioned with Chicken Broth, the system is also helping people overcome their dietary problems.

As you probably know, we’ve been working through the Cognitive Cooking with Chef Watson cookbook for several weeks now. Terrence O’Brien has been our willing cyber chef-cum-guinea pig for the bulk of the recipes and, so far, the results have been mixed. Items such as the Spanish Almond Crescent were pretty tasty, although knowing that it takes more than a day to make it might put off some impatient eaters. Then again, it’s probably better than the aforementioned Chicken-flavored Old Fashioned, which we’d suggest nobody try making… ever.

Google to allow few to test Jump VR video cameras

Google is reportedly going to allow a select few of you test out their latest project, the Jump virtual reality camera equipment. You know, the one that was unveiled earlier this year during Google I/O event? If you don’t, you should go and check out the video from the conference to see just how cool this thing is.

For those of you that don’t want to go and watch the video, the Jump device is an array of 16 GoPro cameras all arranged in a circular design. What this apparently does allow the user to capture video that will be suitable for a virtual reality setting.

Jump enables creators to capture the world in VR video–video that you can step inside of–and make it available to everyone.

Google

While the pricing of the equipment has not yet been set, we can’t imagine that the device will be inexperience. That is why Google is not just going to be handing these out on a whim as you will need to impress the Search Giant explain exactly what you plan on using the Jump device for. There is form located at the source link that you can follow if you feel the need to apply, though we recommend you do so only if you have a great project in mind and you have the skill to make Google want to send you one.

All in all, this is a great opportunity for amateur and veteran users alike and will make a great addition to any serious directors out there.

Google Translate commercial: over 100 billion words translated every day

google-translate-100-billion

Google’s “be together, not the same” campaign goes far beyond customization and a diverse crowd of devices. They extend this slogan to all their other services, and we simply can’t forget about Google Translate. It literally breaks one of the biggest barriers known to man – language.

The Search Giant has just released one of the most emotional Google Translate commercials we have seen, displaying how much this application has changed the way we communicate with others. They claim over 100 billion words are translated a day, with the most popular phrases being “how are you?”, “thank you” and “I love you”.

It’s a very sweet way to tell us that we have to look past the words that may hurt and divide us, and really focus on what an app like this can accomplish. It literally does bring people together. And it does so in a way that is very impressive.

Google Translate is among the most well-developed and full-featured translating apps around (arguably the best). Features like picture translation, offline support, handwriting support, and automatic voice translation are really outstanding. It’s literally like having a live translator, as it can speak out translated text.

google translate

My favorite feature is definitely Word Lens, which allows users to point at any real-life text with the camera and get a direct translation. The translated text will literally show up in your screen, live! It’s truly insane.

I know many of us rarely find a chance to really take advantage of Google Translate, save for those who travel often. I can say it has been a life-saver the few times I have taken advantage of it, though. It doesn’t surprise me to hear it is used so much.

How often do you guys use Google Translate? Is it an important part of your life? Let us know in the comments section. Those who still haven’t downloaded the app can do so by clicking through this link.

Just under a month ago Google released the Android M developer preview for Nexus devices and for those who want to see what it brings to the table. While it isn’t quite everything it will be when it is officially launched, it brought some great changes to the OS. Now we have the same Android M preview being released by Sony for select Xperia devices. Sony has actually been pretty open about development and have offered an Open Device program for quite some time. When creating a software update/preview build, the manufacturer has to do some leg work when it comes to the chipset, binaries and other critical bits of code for their devices. That is exactly what Sony has done for those eager to check it out, but who don’t own a Nexus device.

For those interested, your first stop needs to be the Open Device program device list to see if your current Xperia device is capable of giving it a run. If it is listed, then you will want to snag the Android M preview build, the binaries for your device and follow Sony’s install guide. If you are sporting a carrier branded device I am fairly certain you are out of luck at the moment as the Open Device program only pertains to unlocked devices. Hit the source link for more information and all the links you will need to get the ball rolling.

Foursquare brings Mayorships back via Swarm platform

foursqaure_swam_app_mayorships

Back when Foursquare split up their service to create a “new” Foursquare app and a new Swarm app, one of the features that was lost was the fun of claiming a mayorship. Mayorships were the way that Foursquare gamified their system to encourage check-ins at various locations. Although the app location has shifted, the idea of mayorships as originally implemented is back.

When Swarm was launched, check-ins to obtain a Mayor crown were relegated to a competition between friends. While enjoyable, that proved to not be as much fun as taking on the whole world which prompted Foursquare to bring the competition back to being against all takers.

Consistent with the changes to the apps, the “new” mayorship competitions are available through the Swarm app. Statistics have been compiled for the past month, so users can check now to see if they have any mayorships. To get a mayorship, users can rack up one check-in per day, results take into account the prior 30 days, and ties go to the reigning mayor.

Samsung Safety Truck brings new look to road safety

samsung_safety_truck

Tapping into their expertise in large format displays, in Argentina Samsung has been testing a prototype system for trucks in hopes of improving safety. The Samsung Safety Truck takes a forward-facing digital camera and wirelessly connects it to four large video panels affixed to the back of a truck so following drivers can see the upcoming road and any hazards.

Samsung apparently chose Argentina for testing due to all the two-lane roads in the country and unfortunately, the challenges of passing big rigs which is causing a high number of deaths.

Along with helping overtaking drivers figure out whether such a maneuver is safe, the video panels can also help following drivers better anticipate decelerations due to hazards like animals crossing the road.

Samsung made sure to include night vision capabilities in the camera so the system is effective at night as well as during the day.

Samsung has taken the prototype vehicle out of operation and moved to the next stage of development, which is obtaining approval from various national regulatory agencies around the world. Although Samsung continues to work on the system, it does seem like it may be cost-prohibitive for deployment.

PlayStoreSales wants to keep you up to date on the latest app sales

Doug Lynch from Android Explained aims to keep you informed about all of the latest app sales on the Play Store with his latest blog site.

PlayStoreSales is a simple little blog site that only covers one type of news. App sales. Specifically those on the Play Store!

A little site I have been working on for the past few days. The goal is to make a one-stop repository of all the current app sales(and possibly movie/tv/book/music sales in the future) in the Google Play Store. I’ve been watching the multiple sources that have been trying to do this over the last year or so and none of them seem to do it in a widespread way.

Doug Lynch

He hopes to make sure that every significant app sale is represented on his site by monitoring current app sale sites and putting all of that information into one place for ease of access. The site is clean and simple with what appears to be zero ads cluttering up the site.

The only thing I am worried about is that Lynch won’t be able to maintain the site for an extended period of time, but I am hopeful. Currently, he aims to cut down on the one to two cent drops in prices by writing each post manually.

All I have to say is good luck and this is definitely a site I will be keeping my eye on. For personal usage…

‘Project Cars’ developer is already crowdfunding a sequel

Now that Project Cars is finally out after several delays, Slightly Mad Studios has decided that it’s time to begin raising funds for the game’s sequel. According to its creators, who were also the folks behind Need for Speed, Project Cars 2 will have 50 locations, over 200 racing tracks and eight disciplines (including Rallycross, Hillclimbs and Touge). It will also have a co-op mode, where you and a friend can play as each other’s driver, spotter and co-pilot. The studio has already set up a crowdfunding page on World of Mass Development with multiple tiers and rewards, the lowest of which costs £50 ($79).

Fans with deep pockets can go for the £10,000 ($15,816) option if they want to play an active role during the game’s development, an AI opponent and a race team named after them, various paraphernalia as well as a Michelin-starred dinner and a weekend stay in London. The studio plans to release Project Cars 2 for the PC, PS4, Xbox One and Steam OS. Those who’ve already bought the first iteration don’t have to worry, though: the developers promise more on-demand content for the game while developing the sequel.
