Oppo Mirror 5 images surface
Oppo is all set to launch the Mirror 5 smartphone in the near future and these leaked press images give us a glimpse of a smartphone with an attractive back panel. The Oppo Mirror 5 will fascinate users with its diamond pattern back panel, the latest version of ColorOS and advanced camera techniques that will enhance the camera users experience.
The report claims that the Oppo Mirror 5 will support 2GB of RAM and have 16GB of internal storage. The front facing camera is said to be 5-megapixels while the rear camera will have an advanced interface called PureImage 2.0. There is no information regarding the processor or the rear facing camera’s megapixel count yet. Like all other Oppo smartphones, the Mirror 5 will be running on the latest version of ColorOS 2.0.
From the looks of the images, the design of the smartphone is similar to the company’s other smartphones wich have three capacitive touch buttons at the bottom and all other ports on their usual position. The phone is slated to launch in 20 countries with Taiwan being the first. The phone is also supposed to launch in two different variants. One with 3G and the other with LTE, depending on the markets. Overall, it’s going to be another mid-ranger from the company with decent specifications.

Inhabitat’s Week in Green: garden wheels and 3D-printed fashion
Each week our friends at Inhabitat recap the week’s most interesting green developments and clean tech news for us — it’s the Week in Green.
Electric car lovers are waiting with bated breath for the release of Tesla’s forthcoming Model 3, but some details about the electric car have been revealed in advance of the release. The automaker has announced that it will offer the Model 3 in both sedan and crossover styles. Tesla is the king of electric cars, but other automakers are nipping at the company’s heels. Several reports have surfaced suggesting that BMW is planning an all-electric SUV that will rival the Tesla Model X. Meanwhile, electric vehicle sales are taking off all over the world. A British research firm announced last week that EV sales increased by 366 percent in the UK during the first part of 2015, and major increases have also been seen in Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Austria and China. And in other green transportation news, the Human Power Team at the University of Delft, Netherlands, designed the world’s fastest bicycle, which has been recorded traveling 133.78KPH (more than 80MPH).
Tesla isn’t just in the electric car business; the Silicon Valley-based company is also producing home batteries these days. In a recent shareholders meeting, Tesla CEO Elon Musk revealed that the company will increase the capability of the Powerwall from 2kW to 5kW, but the price will remain the same. One of Musk’s other companies, SolarCity, is set to open a major solar panel factory in Buffalo, New York, next year. The plant is expected to bring around 5,000 jobs to the Buffalo area. In other green energy news, the Obama Administration announced plans to invest $4 billion in renewable energy companies. Improvements to photovoltaic efficiency have radically reduced the cost of solar energy in recent decades, and those advances are only going to continue. Paper-thin printable solar cells hold the most promise for delivering solar power to the developing world because they’re lightweight and inexpensive to produce. And the North African country of Morocco has announced plans to phase out subsidies to fossil fuels as part of its pledge to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 32 percent by 2030.
Smart home technologies have been around for years, but as everyday objects become more and more connected, these technologies are beginning to really take off. Nest, known best for its smart thermostat just launched its first new products since it was acquired by Google: the Nest Cam and a new version of the Protect smoke alarm. Door handles are among the most germ-infested objects in any building, but a team of teenagers from Hong Kong set out to fix that by designing a door handle that kills 99.8 percent of all germs on contact. Best of all? It costs just $13. Designers Jacob Douenias and Ethan Frier have collaborated to produce living algae lamps that produce light, heat and food. Tasmanian furniture designer Duncan Meerding has transformed tree stumps into gorgeous indoor-outdoor lamps. DesignLibero has created a revolutionary hydroponic garden that’s shaped like a wheel and uses NASA technology to grow food faster. And in fashion news, the fashion label Honest By has launched the first downloadable fashion collection for 3D printers.

Taylor Swift Criticizes Apple Music’s Free Trial in Open Letter
A couple days ago BuzzFeed reported that Taylor Swift’s new album, “1989”, would not be available to stream on Apple Music, denying the service of one of the best-selling albums of the last two years. Today, Swift penned an open letter to the Cupertino company explaining her decision.

I’m sure you are aware that Apple Music will be offering a free 3 month trial to anyone who signs up for the service. I’m not sure you know that Apple Music will not be paying writers, producers, or artists for those three months. I find it to be shocking, disappointing, and completely unlike this historically progressive and generous company.
Swift, who calls Apple one of her best partners in selling her music, says that while she is able to take care of herself and her band, crew and management with money from live shows, indie artists do not have the same luxury. She explains that her sentiments about the three-month free trial are echoed by “every artist, writer and producer in my social circles who are afraid to speak up publicly because we admire and respect Apple so much.”
She goes on to say that she understands Apple is working toward a goal of paid streaming and that Apple Music could be the first streaming service that “gets it right” in her eyes in regards to artist compensation. However, she also points out that Apple is “astronomically successful” and could afford to pay artists, writers and producers during the three-month free trial. She closes the open letter asking Apple to reconsider its policy.
But I say to Apple with all due respect, it’s not too late to change this policy and change the minds of those in the music industry who will be deeply and gravely affected by this. We don’t ask you for free iPhones. Please don’t ask us to provide you with our music for no compensation.
This isn’t the first time Apple has received criticism for not paying labels and artists royalties during the 3-month free trial. Last week, indie labels from the United Kingdom who housed artists like Adele argued that the trial period would “put people out of business”. Singer-songwriter Anton Newcombe also spoke out about the policy, claiming the Cupertino company threatened to ban his music from iTunes if he did not accept no royalties during the 3-month free trial. Apple denied the claim.
Apple Music will launch in just under 10 days, going live on June 30 as part of an upcoming iOS 8.4 update. After the service’s free three-month trial it will cost $9.99 per month for individuals and $14.99 a month for families up to 6.
Cassini captures detailed images of Saturn’s moon Dione
This is a photo of Dione, one of Saturn’s moons. Just like the planet’s most stunning images, this picture was also captured by NASA’s and ESA’s Cassini spacecraft, as it flew by on June 16th. The vessel, which has been orbiting Saturn for over a decade, took the pictures in visible light using a narrow-angle camera at an altitude of 321 miles from the moon’s pockmarked surface. While that’s pretty close, the closest flyby yet happened in 2011, when Cassini flew by Dione at an altitude of 62 miles.
The other image below was taken from 48,000 miles away, with Saturn and its rings visible in the background and Enceladus making a cameo on the upper right portion of the pic. Enceladus is another Saturnian moon, which astronomers believe might have warm waters, chemicals and minerals that could foster life. Cassini’s slated to pass real close to it soon — as close as 30 miles from its surface — and will likely take images of the icy satellite, as well.

About Opera Max
Opera Max combines the functionality of a virtual private network with data compression. Put simply, the service routes your Internet traffic through Opera’s servers, and serves you a compressed version, resulting in smaller data bills and faster loading times.
The latest version of Opera Max (1.0.225) includes WiFi data compression. Previously, Opera Max only worked over cellular connections, but there are times when you can benefit from data connection even if you’re using WiFi – for instance, in a crowded airport or on a stadium. Switching compression on in these cases should give you a faster browsing experience.
Opera Max works with browsers, but also with any app that receives data over an unencrypted connection. The new version adds an app management component, allowing you to see which apps eat up a lot of data or battery.

Android Authority this week – June 21, 2015
Folks, this week the world of technology set its sight on Los Angeles, where the E3 show brought us a wave of exciting announcements. And this edition, Android Authority was on the ground to bring you the best mobile gaming related coverage. But it wasn’t all just fun and games. OnePlus released details about its next “flagship killer;” Sony introduced the souped up Xperia Z4v to the States, making us question the logic behind its strategy; Google had a handful of app updates; Samsung introduced budget-friendly smartphones and tablets; and a new chapter of the Snapdragon 810 saga unfolded.
Inside AA HQ
One of the biggest themes we spotted at E3 is virtual reality. There were a handful of VR-related presences at previous shows, but this year VR just exploded. From cheap headsets that work with your smartphone, Cardboard on steroids of sorts, to flagships like Oculus Rift and Sony’s Morpheus, VR headsets were everywhere. We also saw a variety of software, accessories, and controllers designed for VR, suggesting that the ecosystem is finally close to becoming consumer-friendly. Now, the big question: is the buzz real or is it just another fad that nobody will remember a couple of years from now? We’ll find the answer over the next months.

Like VR, mobile gaming seems on the cusp of greatness. Sure, mobile games are already hugely popular, but looking at games like Dawn of Titans, with their console-like graphics, it’s clear that we’re still just scratching the surface when it comes to mobile gaming. And that’s very exciting.
Back to our daily focus, we’re heading into the “silly season” of the Android world. All the big flagships are out already, and with a few exceptions, OEMs are now silently working on their fall releases. Hopefully, OnePlus and their knack for drama, the next Moto X, and the inevitable Note 5 rumors will save us from boredom!
This week we have a special giveaway, we are giving away 3 Android phones: Samsung Galaxy S6 edge, Galaxy S6. LG G4! Enter here.

Bing’s smarter video search is big on music
Microsoft knows that Bing’s video search looks more than a little outdated in an era when YouTube frequently doubles as a music player. Accordingly, it’s giving the feature a much-needed makeover. The new page puts a much stronger emphasis on music videos — search for a recognizable tune and you’ll get an extra-large video that will play in place if you’d rather not visit the source link. It also moves related searches in-line with the original, so you’ll have a better shot at finding that elusive cover song or remix.
You’ll get bigger thumbnail as well, and there are additional video details (such as channels and view counts) to help sort the official clips from the poorly produced bootlegs. Is this upgrade going to make you ditch Google when you’re hunting down tracks? Probably not (Google already pushes hard on music videos), but it’ll give you an alternative if you regularly have trouble finding footage.

Alcatel OneTouch becomes the smartphone partner of Toronto FC

Alcatel continues to expand its brand in America, which makes today’s announcement one of the most important events in this continent. Alcatel OneTouch has officially become the official smartphone partner of Toronto FC, the Canadian city’s acclaimed soccer team.
Alcatel describes this as a “multi-year partnership”, which will result in a “focus on pre-game fan experiences, in-game fan engagement, social media, digital campaigns, in-game branding advertising and in-market promotion.”
This is definitely a big deal for Alcatel, as it’s their first time striking a deal like this, and it should definitely give them good reach in Canada, as well as other parts of North America. This news comes only a couple days after Alcatel announced Canadian availability of the OneTouch Idol 3 on June 30th, so it seems the company is putting quite an effort to pierce this competitive market.

“We’re excited to announce this new strategic partnership with Toronto FC, delivering on our commitment to build engagement around our brand as we continue to rise as one of the top smartphone manufacturers in the region.” -Dave Hopkinson, Chief Commercial Officer for MLSE
So if you like Soccer (or football, as the rest of the world calls it), you will be hearing a lot from Alcatel during the games. That will be all fun and honky dory, but if you really want to learn about the devices Alcatel makes, you should take a look at our Alcatel OneTouch Idol 3 review. It’s one hell of a phone for the price, to be honest! I have personally been testing it for about a month and can’t complain about it.

Uber prohibits drivers and riders from carrying firearms

The firearm debate continues in the USA, with very polarized opinions highlighting both the pros and the cons of our gun regulations. Uber now joins the discussion by quietly (or at least trying to be) updating their policy on the matter. From now on, no driver or rider is allowed to carry around any kind of firearm while using the service.
Uber’s policy usued to be to follow local, state and federal law. The excerpt now reads as follows:
UBER FIREARMS PROHIBITION POLICY
We seek to ensure that everyone using the Uber digital platform—both driver-partners and riders—feels safe and comfortable using the service. During a ride arranged through the Uber platform, Uber and its affiliates therefore prohibit possessing firearms of any kind in a vehicle. Any rider or driver found to have violated this prohibition may lose access to the Uber platform.

Some of you will love this, which makes sense, but this new rule will definitely raise a long list of questions, comments and concerns from unhappy users. Some of you will think this is pretty unfair from a service that aims to be the best in-class transportation service the world has seen, yet now it can’t really serve a good amount of people.
It completely reasonable for a company to try and make its customers as comfortable as possible, but they do have to consider some of these patrons will feel very limited by this new regulation. People often have valid permits to carry weapons wherever they go, including off-duty cops and other government officials. Can they really not take a ride on an Uber vehicle while carrying?
Gun regulation often asks that general drivers carry their weapons unloaded and out of reach, as well. A popular tip is to unload it, lock it up in a box and put it in the trunk of your vehicle. Is this also not allowed in an Uber vehicle? What if someone wants to simply transport a weapon from the gun shop to their home?
Of course, businesses are allowed to make their own rules on this matter and Uber is in its full legal right to do this. Just as some popular retailers are allowed to let customers walk into their stores with a big gun on your waist. It’s just interesting to see how the debate on gun control and acceptance unfolds.

Uber is definitely not the only ones doing this, though. Lyft has had a strict no-gun policy from the start. We tried to reach out to 3 local San Diego taxi companies to try and further compare Uber to other transportation services, but none of them decided to comment on the matter. I was simply told to call on Monday so I could ask the manager, himself.
Makes sense, as I did identify myself as press and this is more than a political thing; it extends to morality and the company’s image. Or at least that is what I keep telling myself so I can dismiss the probability of them thinking I was some crazy guy up to no good.
But tell us, guys. Do you agree with Uber’s new policy? Do you think they should be a little more open about it? Also, do any of you have any experience with cab policy on guns?
UCLA discovers how solar cells’ charges can last for weeks
Solar cells have always been inspired by photosynthesis, so it’s only natural for researchers to take cues from different aspects of the energy-making process. A team of UCLA chemists, for instance, have developed a way that will allow solar cells to keep their charge for weeks instead of just a few seconds like current products are capable of. According to Sarah Tolbert, UCLA chem professor and one of the study’s authors, they looked into plants’ nanoscale structures that can keep negatively charged molecules separated from positively charged ones. “That separation is the key to making the process so efficient,” she said.
The team has discovered that in order to mimic those nanoscale structures in plastic solar cells (which are potentially cheaper to make than silicon-based ones), they need to use two components: a polymer donor and a nano-scale fullerene acceptor. The team describes the process as follows:
The UCLA technology arranges the elements more neatly — like small bundles of uncooked spaghetti with precisely placed meatballs (see image below). Some fullerene meatballs are designed to sit inside the spaghetti bundles, but others are forced to stay on the outside. The fullerenes inside the structure take electrons from the polymers and toss them to the outside fullerene, which can effectively keep the electrons away from the polymer for weeks.
In short, those two can form the right “noodle and meatball” structure to keep different charges away from each other for days to weeks, greatly improving a cell’s capability to retain power. It’s also a plus that the components can auto-assemble, simply by putting them in water. The ability to store energy is a big deal for solar energy systems, since they need to be able to save enough power to use at night or during days when the sun isn’t shining as brightly. UCLA’s technology isn’t quite ready yet, but Tolbert and her team are already trying to figure out how to incorporate it into real solar cells.
