Twitter will start curating the best tweets about daily events

Twitter CEO Dick Costolo will officially leave the building next month, but one of his ambitious pet projects – codenamed “Project Lightning” – just might change the way people interact with Twitter even after he’s gone. According to a report from BuzzFeed’s Mat Honan, Lightning will highlight specific events or conversations happening that very moment with the help of editors who’ll weave a sort of visual tapestry from textual tweets, photos and videos.

Let’s say you dive into one of these events. Instead of poking around the traditional timeline, those chosen tweets will take up your entire screen (and, in the case of video, will start playing automatically). If everything goes according to plan, you might see between seven and ten such “events” a day, too, which means Twitter’s got some media-savvy hiring to do. Twitter has almost always been a facilitator, an engine for news and organizations that package it up. Now, with Lightning as part of the mix, it’s going to turn that unending stream of noise into something dramatically more digestible without anyone else’s help. But here’s the kicker: It seems like you’ll be able to dig into those events even if you don’t have a Twitter account. For a company that catches flack whenever it announces disappointing user numbers and desperately needs fresh eyes that’ll keep coming back, this is a bold — and necessary — move. With any luck, Lightning and its immediate (hopefully thoughtful) context just might be the thing that turns the Twitter-averse into people who can’t get enough.

Xbox is working with a ‘broad array of VR providers’

Microsoft is entering the virtual reality conversation with a one-two punch: partnerships with both Oculus and Valve VR. The Oculus Rift will be bundled with a wireless Xbox One controller, native support on Windows 10 and the ability to play Xbox One games in a virtual cinema via Xbox-to-Windows streaming. Valve VR joins the Rift on Windows 10, a partnership that Microsoft announced during its Xbox E3 conference, suggesting a focus on gaming in Valve’s virtual worlds. But, Microsoft’s VR plans may be bigger than just two other companies, Microsoft General Manager of Games Publishing Shannon Loftis suggested during an interview at E3 this week. Read her thoughts on VR, gaming and Windows 10 below.

What’s going on with Microsoft’s Valve VR partnership?

What we’re focused on is creating a Windows 10-based ecosystem that extends to as many different platforms and experience types as possible. VR is incredibly important. Gamers have told us that it’s important; game developers want to use it to tell stories in a special way.

We want to make it easy for game developers to deliver to gamers, so we are partnering with a broad array of VR providers — we’ve talked about Oculus; we’ve talked about Valve — to make sure that when people are creating these experiences that they have as many choices as possible.

To clarify, are you working with any other VR hardware manufacturers, besides Oculus and Valve?

None that we’re talking about right now, but a Windows 10-powered pipeline that extends to a lot of different outlets is a great value for developers and in turn a great value for gamers.

Are virtual and augmented reality the future of gaming?

Different game experiences play best in different settings and I think virtual reality is an incredible experience when you’re totally immersed in a universe, and I love the inherently social nature of console gaming. I don’t really see any of them going away because I think there are still great stories to tell and great games to build for all of these.

Fitbit’s IPO is more evidence wearables have grown up

Wearable company Fitbit began trading on the New York Stock Exchange this morning, signaling the device maker had completed it move to go public. According to Forbes, the IPO raised $732 million for the company that’s trading with a market cap of $6 billion. What do those numbers mean exactly? Well, wearables, despite being niche devices and studies that show phones are just as good at tracking, are a big business that’s capable of raking in billions. To put it simply, wearables have grown up.

Fitbit’s IPO follows several quarters of steady revenue growth, including a $126 million increase in Q1 over the same period last year. If you’ll recall, the company announced a trio of new devices last fall, so that provided an extra push. What’s also interesting about Fitbit going public is that nowadays software startups and services are typically the ones making the move to be publicly traded. The decision to file for IPO is made less often by hardware companies. It’s particularly interesting for a wearable maker, especially when you consider a lot of folks buying them only commit to daily wear for a short time.

However, as Fitbit’s numbers show, there’s big money to be made in wearables. The company nabbed a personal training app to boost the experience for users and hiring a former HTC lead designer to guide product development. Of course, it’s also being sued by Jawbone for “plundering” sensitive product information and skin issues are an on-going problem. And if Jawbone has its way, Fitbit may face a sales ban in the US, which is sure to eat into those healthy valuation and sales figures.

Facebook tests a new tool to personalize your news feed

THAILAND-POLITICS-PROTEST

Last year Facebook debuted a very handy “muting” feature for its News Feed service that allowed users to stop receiving updates from specific people and pages without actually unfriending them. Today, Facebook has quietly begun testing a complimentary News Feed settings function that actively promotes specific content dubbed “See First“. According to TechCrunch, users simply click on a friend or page’s “following” button, then select “See First” from the subsequent menu to activate it.

The new service appears to be in early release at the moment. I couldn’t access that menu in my personal feed and Facebook seems to confirm the service’s limited availability in a statement to TechCrunch, “We are always exploring new ways to improve the Facebook experience, and are currently running a small test of a feature that lets you indicate that you’d like to see posts from a specific person or Page at the top of your News Feed.” There’s no word yet on when the new service will go live to the general public.

Razer Forge TV Bundle now available in Google Store for $150

If you’ve had your eyes on Razer’s new Android console, the Forge TV, it now has some support from Google.  It is now available on the Play Store as a bundle with the controller, so you can get your game on.

This Android TV-powered unit goes head-to-head with Nvidia’s strong Shield offering.  How does it compare?  While Nvidia uses its own home-brewed SoC, the Tegra X1, Razer goes for a more conventional Snapdragon 805 (with Adreno 420 GPU).  Because this is a gaming console, Nvidia has the lead here, but the 805 certainly is no slouch and has proven to rip through the latest Android games.

Other specs of the Forge TV include 2GB of RAM, 16 GB of on-board storage, resolution support up to 1080P (the Nvidia Shield can do 4K), and future Razer Cortex game streaming capability.

The controller bundle goes for $150 on the Play Store.  Compared to the $200 price tag of the 16GB Shield, I would say the offer is appropriately priced.  The Forge TV controller can also be used to game on-the-go with a phone attachment and bluetooth.  Also, you can connect up to 4 controllers to one box, for some multiplayer fun.

Google’s Clock app makes its way onto the Play Store

You can now add the stock Google clock to the plethora of stock apps that Google has added to the list of available apps in the Play Store. Earlier today, Google released the clock app that’s found in everything from Android 4.4 KitKat, all the way up to Android M.

Clock 1
Clock 2

The app is compatible with any device running Android 4.4 and up, and is of course available for free. Now this clock app may not be updated regularly, however, it’s still pretty awesome to be able to download Google’s clock app versus versus having to use the default app from LG or Samsung.

Enjoy Google’s material design clock experience on your Android device.
• Set alarms, add timers, and run a stopwatch
• Add your favorite cities to the World Clock pane
• Connect with Android Wear to snooze or dismiss alarms from your watch

You can grab the default Google clock application from the Play Store widget below. What other default Google apps would you like to see “ported” to the Play Store so that it will become available for everyone? Let us know in the comments below.
