Pushbullet’s new Portal app makes it easy to transfer files from your PC to your Android device

Just about everything the Pushbullet team releases to the public aims to make transferring files of all shapes and sizes much easier between mobile devices, browsers and more. Now the developers have brought us a new application called Portal, which makes transferring files from your computer to your Android device a breeze.

Of course, file sharing between the PC and Android is possible with the proper Pushbullet app, though Portal tries to make it a tad easier and faster. To make Portal work, just download the free app from the Google Play Store, then head to portal.pushbullet.com on your computer’s browser. Launch the application on your phone, and then scan the QR code you see on your computer screen. Once the service recognizes the code (which, I must say is very fast), you can then easily drag and drop any files you’d like to the webpage. All of your files will upload over the Wi-Fi network, so there’s no need to worry about it counting against your monthly data plan. Once you’re done transferring files, simply press the disconnect button, and you’ll be moved back to the start of the app. The developers say that Portal can transfer files larger than 1GB in size, as well.

Portal 2

Portal will automatically file your sent pictures to your phone’s gallery app, and your music files in your phone’s music folder, which will make it easy for other apps to find the files. This is perhaps the most impressive feature of the app, and many users will likely find this extremely useful in certain situations.

If you’re running Android 5.0 Lollipop or newer, Portal can also save files directly to your SD card. Head on over to the app’s settings menu to turn this feature on if you’re interested. Let’s be honest here – this isn’t any new groundbreaking feature that the team has come up with. However, seeing as how Pushbullet has received constant feature-filled updates since its launch on Android and continues to work very well, Portal may be a good option for those looking for a reliable way to quickly get files to their mobile devices without a hitch. The app is now available for free in the Google Play Store, so head to the link below to try it out for yourself.

New Razer VR HDK now supports Android

razer_osvr_headset

Razer is trying to get into the virtual reality headset game with their recent launch of the Open Source VR initiative. That initiative includes both the software to support VR as well as their own virtual reality headset. However, the initial hardware lacked support for Android and did not include any position tracking hardware. Razer has released a new OSVR Hacker Development Kit (HDK) taking it up to version 1.2 that includes Android support as well as a new IR system and camera that work together to provide 360 degrees of position tracking.

Razer is also working to help developers via plans to release a mobile faceplate. By using the mobile faceplate, developers will be able to test OSVR hardware with Android devices by swapping out the default faceplate. As part of development of a new faceplate, Razer is also working to incorporate a built-in Leap Motion controller and eventually they plan to upgrade the eyepiece module to support a 150 degree view.

The new HDK 1.2 is now shipping for $299. The price includes the new positional tracking hardware although those specific components will not ship until July. For developers who happen to already own the HDK 1.1, they can upgrade to add the IR kit for $130.

Panasonic launches the Lumix CM1 in the U.S. market

panasonic cm1

Panasonic has announced they are bringing the Lumix CM1 camera to the U.S. market through a variety of retailers and their own online store. The Lumix CM1 was originally launched last year in France and Germany. The list price in the U.S. for the hybrid camera will be $999.99.

The Lumix CM1 is a hybrid device combining a point-and-shoot type compact digital camera with a typical smartphone running Android. Unlike most smartphones, Panasonic went ahead and loaded up the device with a camera sporting a 1-inch sensor. This enables it to take some exceptionally high quality images. The camera also supports 4K video recording. To help users take advantage of the 4K capabilities, Panasonic includes a couple apps called 4K Photo and 4K Pre-Burst. The first one can be used to snip out a photo from a 4K video while the second one can be used for fast-action photography.

Along with the camera features, Panasonic included Wi-Fi and 4G LTE chips in the device so it can double as a phone. It is unclear whether the units are shipping with Lollipop, but an upgrade from KitKat is available.

Kickstarter project by Kuai puts biometric devices in headphones form factor

kuai_headphones

A new project on Kickstarter takes a unique approach to measuring biometric data for users engaged in a variety of sporting activities. Most of the efforts we have seen in recent years involve activity trackers worn on the wrist and many companies are incorporating those features into their smartwatch solutions. A few other companies, like FitBit, also produce hardware that can be clipped on the body somewhere to measure things like steps taken. Kuai is currently raising funds to take all of this and put it in the form of headphones.

The Kuai multisport biometric headphones will be waterproof up to 3 meters deep, meaning they can be worn while swimming along with other activities like cycling and running. Kuai packs sensors into the headphones including a heart rate sensor and an accelerometer so the device can measure heart rate, VO2max, distance, cadence, speed/pace and calories.

Along with the sensors, Kuai included 8GB of integrated memory so that users can load up some music to listen to while exercising. The memory can also be used to record performance data for later analysis and review or to load training plans with voice alerts. The headphones will come with Bluetooth Smart support for connection to smartphones so all of the data can be shared with a variety of apps and services.

The Kuai Headphones will be available in black, white or a special limited edition Kickstarter Green. The Kickstarter project is close to meeting its goal already. According to Kuai’s development schedule, units should start shipping in November 2015 with a full retail price of approximately $167. There are several pledge options still available to obtain a set at significant discounts from the projected retail price.

Samsung Galaxy Young 3 leaks online

Many smartphone leaks have been piling up in recent months. All have been pretty high spec’d phones coming from famous brands. Well, today comes a brand new leak, this one courtesy of Samsung. An entry-level Samsung smartphone, the SM-G150 (this is the model number, not the actual name of the device) has started popping up in various places.

Samsung’s SM-G150 has shown up in IMEI listings, Bluetooth certifications and recently it was seen on Zauba import/export tracking site as being sent to India for testing. We know that the Samsung Galaxy Young 2 carried the model number SM-G130, and considering the model number of this leak is SM-G150, it can be safe to assume that this phone will be called the Samsung Galaxy Young 3.

The Samsung Galaxy Young 2  was released in October of last year and featured a 3.5-inch 320×480 display, 512MB of RAM with a 1Ghz single-core CPU. While not much can be expected from the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Young 3, it will mostly feature some upgraded specs like a bigger display, more processing power and RAM, a better camera all running on Android Lollipop hopefully.

Panasonic Lumix CM1 camera smartphone available for pre-order in US, at $999

Have you been frustratingly waiting for that promising Panasonic Lumix CM1 camera-phone to drop since the announcement back at CES?  I’m happy to report that it’s at least one step closer to getting into your pointing and shooting hands.

The CM1 has begun showing up for pre-order at US online retailers, appropriately popular camera electronic stores, B&H and Adorama.  We’re looking at a whopping price tag of $999.  I hope you were ready to pay a premium for a phone that puts the camera capability front and center.

Panasonic packed this guy with a large protruding 1-inch high-sensitivity MOS sensor, 20 MP f/2.8 Leica DC Elmarit 28mm lens, and a bunch of full manual controls to your heart’s desire.  It can shoot 4K video at 15 fps, support for RAW format, and 2X zooming.

The rest of the phone is fairly modest:

  • 4.7-inch 1080P TFT LCD display
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 SoC (2.3 GHz, quad-core, Adreno 330 GPU)
  • 2 GB of RAM
  • 16 GB of on-board storage, expandable by 128 GB via microSD
  • 1.1 MP front camera
  • 2,600 mAh battery
  • GSM-only network support, LTE capable
  • Android 4.4 KitKat, with the promise for 5.0 Lollipop

For folks who welcome the mashup between smartphone and point-and-shooter, does the Panasonic CM1 still strike your interest?  Or is it too late, and/or too expensive?
