If you have Android Auto, you should get TuneIn Radio

android auto review aa (14 of 16)

Android is no longer just an operating system you choose to get on your smartphone or tablet. The industry is evolving and welcoming new platforms, form factors and applications. You can now even opt to get Android Auto with your car!

Android Auto is relatively new, so we know you will need some help trying to figure out which apps you should get for those long commutes and road trips. One of our favorites happens to be TuneIn Radio, so let’s show you what it’s all about!

tunein-radio

What is TuneIn Radio all about?

The idea is very simple. TuneIn Radio harnesses the power of broadcast radio stations and web podcasts. Yes, you can listen to actual radio stations through the internet. The app goes as far as offering international stations, so some of us may even feel a little closer to home while driving around town listening to TuneIn Radio.

As it goes with any other Android Auto-supported app, you can control TuneIn via voice commands and never really take your eyes off the road. It’s still not the best option for those trying to discover new stations and podcasts, but you could pull your car over for that (hopefully you will!). Voice commands are pretty much for those who know exactly what they want to listen to.

How do I get TuneIn Radio?

Interested? You can get yourself signed up by downloading the TuneIn Radio app from the Google Play Store. By the way, there is no need to download any special apps for Android Auto. All the vehicle-focused functionality is built into the smartphone app, as it should be.

Oh, and it’s also available for all kinds of devices and platforms, so it’s not really only for Android Auto users. We can all take advantage of this awesome app.

Wrapping up!

We are expecting Android Auto to boom and reach many vehicles in the coming years, so expect us to cover more applications and services like this one. I personally use TuneIn radio all the time, so I can’t wait to enjoy it with Android Auto. Hopefully I can afford a new vehicle soon!

If you are lucky enough to have an Android Auto-equipped vehicle, though, do give TuneIn Radio and tell us what you think about it in the comments below! By the way, you can learn more about Android Auto by checking out our review on the 2015 Hyundai Sonata.

Motorola to launch Moto Maker in India on June 15?!

moto x 2014 first impressions (8 of 18)

While Motorola India is not being 100% direct about what they are going to announce on June 15th, they are making it pretty clear on their Twitter account. Drop me off in Vegas and I am willing to bet my cash on it; our fellow Indians will likely get a taste of Moto Maker on June 15th (or soon after).

Brief Moto Maker summary

If you have been living under a rock, Moto Maker is Motorola’s online tool for customizing and purchasing devices like the Moto X and Moto 360. It became a sensation in an industry where real hardware customization is pretty much non-existent.

Moto Maker UK

With Moto Maker you can choose from multiple storage options, engravings, colors, and materials. You can even pay extra for your phone to be partly made of awesome materials like wood or leather.

The proof?

Now, that we have refreshed your memory a bit, let’s get back on topic and talk about Moto Maker coming to India. So it turns out the Motorola India Twitter account has been pretty active the past few days. And they are especially fond of posting about “something” that will be announced on June 15th.

What is it? Well, just look at the tweets and be the judge of that.

Not hard to decipher, right? It looks like Motorola is planning to bring Moto Maker to India. You can bet we will stay on the lookout for more details to come. The 15th is tomorrow, so you won’t have to wait much longer to find out what Motorola really has under its sleeve.

An ’80s-era Amiga controls the heating for an entire school district

An Amiga 2000 next to its siblings

Think the Windows XP workstation you use at the office is ancient? It doesn’t hold a candle next to what the Grand Rapids Public School district is using to control its climate systems. All 19 schools covered by the authority depend on a nearly 30-year-old Commodore Amiga 2000 to automate their air conditioning and heating. It communicates to the other schools using a pokey 1,200 baud modem and a wireless radio so behind the times that it occasionally interferes with maintenance workers’ walkie talkies. Oh, and a high school student wrote the necessary code — if something goes wrong, the district has to contact the now middle-aged programmer and hope that he can fix it. It’s a testament to the dependability of the Amiga in question, but you probably wouldn’t want to trust the well-being of thousands of students to a computer that’s probably older than some of the teachers.

There’s a good reason why the school district has been hanging on to this vintage solution for so long. Replacing it with a modern system could cost up to $2 million dollars, which isn’t exactly chump change when an HVAC controller upgrade is usually low on the priority list. There may be relief in sight, however. If the electorate passes a $175 million bond proposal, the district will have the cash it needs to replace its Amiga with a computing platform that was built sometime this century.

YouTube Gaming slated to release later this summer

Well, what do we have here? It appears that YouTube is about to take even more of our time when their new app launches later this summer. Dubbed Youtube Gaming, the new YouTube app will gather all of your favorite live feeds, walkthroughs, gamer reviews, and many other videos about your favourite games and place them in one big catalog. YouTube gaming states that starting off, more than 25,000 games will each have their own dedicated page that will hold all available videos that pertain to said game.

I feel like maybe I’m part of that generation that became more of a gamer than a video consumer. It’s always been something I’ve done with my spare time. If I had three hours on a Friday night, I’m not out partying. I’m probably playing video games.

Felicia Day

YouTube Gaming has made it super easy to use their new app, as all you have to do is search for your favorite titles and you will then be able to subscribe to them. Think of it as subscribing to your favorite YouTubers, except instead of following a person or company, you are following a game.

01_blog_post_line

I don’t know about you, but I am pretty excited about this new app. As an avid gamer myself, I know that I will definitely be checking out YouTube Gaming more in depth once it is officially released. YouTube has not set a specific date as of yet, but they state that it will hit the U.S and U.K first. You can make sure that we will let you guys know when it goes live though, hopefully, sooner rather than later.

Try out Lollipop for the Motorola DROID Turbo

doid turbo 5.1Many Motorola DROID Turbo owners have been in a dilemma since the release of Android Lollipop, complaining about the fact that their device is still stuck on Android 4.4.4. Since, the release of Android 5.1, there have been numerous rumors about the DROID Turbo receiving the update.

Android 5.1 was supposed to hit the Motorola DROID Turbo in the mid of June, according to reports from a Verizon device engineer last month. Motorola’s Senior Director of Software Product Management, David Schuster shed more light on this in a recent Google+ post stating that the update is still in the works.

Thanks to Verizon’s website, you can get an idea of how the Android 5.1 update will look on your Motorola DROID Turbo. While, it doesn’t update the Android version of your device, it does gives you a feel of what’s to come.

Basically, it’s a simulator to get an experience of the Motorola DROID Turbo. It allows potential customers to get a virtual tour of the device. Recently, the simulator OS has been upgraded to Android 5.1, which means you can now try out all of the features that it offers like browsing or making calls, and get a gist of them all with the upgraded UI.

From the reports that we have seen so far, it’s unlikely the Android 5.1 will be making it to Motorola DROID Turbo soon. However, to help DROID Turbo owners keep patient for the foreseeable future, this droolworthy option is worth checking out.

The US Navy wants to buy unpatched security flaws

US Navy radar

It won’t surprise you to hear that governments are eager to buy unpatched security exploits for the sake of cyberdefense or surveillance, but they’re rarely overt about it. No one must have told that to the US Navy until this week, however. The Electronic Frontier Foundation caught the military branch soliciting for both zero-day exploits and recently discovered vulnerabilities (less than six months old) for relatively common software from the likes of Apple, Google and Microsoft. The Navy quickly took the posting down, but it was clear the organization wanted to turn these flaws into “exploit binaries” — that is, finished software that would be useful for attacks.

The American government has policies for disclosing exploits to app makers in time to protect the general public, and it’s not clear that the software would be used strictly as an offensive weapon. Security testers often write programs to prove that security holes are dangerous, after all. However, the request raises questions about priorities. While the US is making arrangements to limit the export of zero-days and similar attacks, it’s simultaneously encouraging security researchers to sell their findings before they warn developers. The fear is that you’ll be left open to hackers for longer than necessary in the name of fighting digital wars.
