Back in March we heard of Motorola‘s plans to jump the the Motorola DROID Turbo from Android KitKat straight to Android 5.1, eliminating Android 5.0 from the equation entirely. While in the long term DROID Turbo owners should probably be thanking Motorola for its foresight, it’s still a hard wait considering so many other devices are rocking Android Lollipop already. Still, the wait is almost over with reports saying that Android 5.1 for the Motorola DROID Turbo is going to be dropped on June 10th.

The DROID Turbo is certainly Motorola’s most impressive device from a hardware perspective, at least, ignoring to the Motorola-manufactured Nexus 6, but it’s interesting that they didn’t give it the same treatment that it gave its other major devices, the Moto X and Moto G. All the same, the update is apparently coming, so come June 10th, start mashing your System Updates button – and feel free to drop us a line in the comments if (or when) you get your update.

Cornell’s website can ID bird species through photos

Casual birdwatchers may want to bookmark Merlin Bird Photo ID, a website created by Cornell University and the Visipedia research project. Thanks to powerful artificial intelligence techniques, the website can identify birds in photos you upload, so long as they’re species found in the US and Canada. You will need to draw a box around the feathered creature, click its beak, eye and tail, as well as identify where and when you took the picture. But after that, the system will do the rest: it will sift through the numerous photos taken by other birdwatchers, including the 70 million images in the eBird.org database, to find ones that match your image.

It will then present you a list of the best matches “within seconds,” along with their photos and recordings of the sounds and songs they make. Like any other system that uses machine-learning tech, the more people use it, the better it becomes at identifying different species. As Cornell Tech Computer Science professor Serge Belongie said:

Computers can process images much more efficiently than humans-they can organize, index, and match vast constellations of visual information such as the colors of the feathers and shapes of the bill. The state-of-the-art in computer vision is rapidly approaching that of human perception, and with a little help from the user, we can close the remaining gap and deliver a surprisingly accurate solution.

The website is open to anyone and free to use, but it doesn’t work on phones and tablets yet. However, its creators promise that when it does become good enough to ID birds in smartphone photos, they’ll add the feature to Cornell’s Merlin app for Android and iOS. That application helps you identify avian species, as well, but it’s by asking five questions about the bird you spotted.

Amazon’s voice-savvy Echo speaker now reads audiobooks to you

Amazon Echo speaker

If you’re the sort to wander around the house listening to audiobook versions of hot new novels, Amazon just made your day: it upgraded its voice-guided Echo speaker to handle Audible files. Much like a kid asking for a bedtime story, you only have to ask the Echo to read you a title. It’ll even pick up where you left off without mentioning the book by name. Amazon’s audio tube won’t speak text (at least, not yet), but this is a big step forward if music playback alone just won’t cut it.

‘Better Re’ Kickstarter finds a use for old cellphone batteries

Better Re hasn’t exactly smashed through the boundaries and who even knows if designer Enlighten is here to stay, but it did exceed its $50,000 Kickstarter goal for a project that’s on the greener side of things. The idea is that the Better Re will repurpose the battery from your old smartphone (so long as it’s of the removeable sort) into an external power source for your phone, tablet and from the looks of it, even your laptop. The pitch video claims that at the average rate we typically replace our smartphones — every two years — their batteries still are about 80 percent efficient. That’s quite a bit of wasted and unharnessed power that could serve a purpose instead of us mining for more lithium as demand increases. So, for $39 you can tap into that energy and use it to get extra time out of your gadgets.

The base tier includes the shell that turns your lithium-ion battery into an external power source and a USB cable, while $55 nets you the “full” package. That gets you the case, a USB cable, a used battery and engraved panels for the case. Enlighten knows that phones with built-in batteries (like the Nexus 4 or Galaxy S6) threaten its business, but says that it’s working to develop batteries of its own to counter that. It also seems pretty confident that if batteries shrink it can adjust the size of Better Re to fit ’em. Early bird options are still available, so you might want to get on that if you’re looking for a cheaper option than a Mophie or Anker external power supply.

The LightSail solar spacecraft is in dire straits once again

LightSail as it's supposed to work

Unfortunately, the LightSail spacecraft’s recovery wasn’t quite as miraculous as its creators first thought. The Planetary Society reports that it hasn’t heard back from its sailer since Wednesday, shortly after the vehicle deployed its solar panels. The ground crew suspects that the failure might be due to a battery glitch, since the energy cells largely stopped drawing a current after the panels deployed. Attempts to wake up LightSail with “blind” commands (that is, without confirmed contact) haven’t helped, so there’s no simple fix.

Unlike the last catastrophe, it’s not so likely that the craft will simply revive itself if given enough time. There’s hope that this is a “chronic undervoltage condition” that will fix itself once LightSail enters an orbit with significantly more sunlight. If there’s something else to blame, however, this initial test run might just come to an unceremonious end — and the team will have to learn some hard lessons to prevent similar trouble with future flights.

SteamVR starts shipping Vive Developer Edition

htc_vive_1

Earlier this year HTC announced they were partnering with Valve to bring a virtual reality headset to market. While HTC is supplying the hardware, Valve is supplying the software through their SteamVR platform. In April Valve started accepting applications for developer editions of the device. This week Valve announced they have started shipping the first batch of devices to selected applicants.

According to Valve, the selected developers include major movie studios, “triple A” developers, and small indie teams. This will be the first batch of many that Valve plans to ship this summer leading up to the consumer release in the fall.

Valve says they included a headset, two Lighthouse base stations, two wireless Steam VR controllers, and an assortment of cables to go with the instructions manual. According to Valve, they are trying to replicate what consumers will receive as much as possible.

Apple Pay is reportedly coming to the UK this summer

Apple Pay in the US

Apple Pay’s tap-to-buy service might not be confined to the US for much longer. The Telegraph‘s sources hear that Apple will use next week’s Worldwide Developer Conference to announce the UK launch of its mobile payment service this summer. Reportedly, the company will flick the switch sometime in the next two months. It’s not clear exactly which companies have signed up, but 9to5Mac claims that big bank Lloyds TSB is a launch partner; MasterCard, meanwhile, says that it’s “absolutely ready” for an Apple Pay debut in Great Britain. There’s no word of a similarly quick introduction for other countries (sorry Canada), but it’s evident that Apple wants to spread its shopping tech far and wide before rivals show up.

Valve starts handing out HTC’s VR headset to developers

HTC's Vive VR headset on a happy James Trew

If you’re one of the fortunate few software developers to have scored HTC’s Vive virtual reality headset, you’ll want to keep an eye out for a delivery truck in the near future. Valve has confirmed that it’s shipping the Vive Developer Edition to a “wide range” of teams, ranging from indie game studios to big-name movie producers. It’s not clear how many got their VR headgear, although Owlchemy Labs’ Devin Reimer has revealed that he’s on the short list. You’ll still have to wait until the end of the year to snag a Vive if you’re a regular gamer, unfortunately. Still, the developer release at least suggests that the public launch is on track.

Facebook Messenger revamps location sharing system

messenger-location-sharing-carouselFacebook is rolling out an improved version of location sharing in Facebook Messenger app. We had seen earlier that Messenger allowed location to be sent along with every chat message in the conversation. This was not such a useful feature as we could only know the general area from where the message was being sent and not the user’s actual location.

There was no way to share your location in Facebook Messenger if ever one wanted to convey their whereabouts. Resorting to a maps application like Google Maps for location sharing had become common for regular users of Facebook Messenger.

Facebook has taken this into consideration and now we have a new way to share location in Messenger. Just tap on the more button in a conversation and select the location option. Telling a friend where to meet or just sharing your location with a friend to tell them you are running late.

With this update, Facebook gives you the right to share your location how you want it, and will no longer embed it into messages. The new option gives the user, choice to share their location as a separate message.

It’s odd that this feature comes just days after the Facebook Messenger location tracking scandal. Is it just a coincidence or just a desperate cover up?

What do you think? Let us know in the comments.
