Sensor-equipped seals deliver goldmine of climate data

TO GO WITH AFP STORY IN FRENCH BY GUY CL

Seals with sensors have been roaming Antarctica’s seas for over a decade and the trove of data they gathered is now available to scientists across the world. The research, conducted by an 11-nation consortium called Marine Mammals exploring the Oceans Pole-to-Pole (MEOP), was designed to see how climate change affects sensitive oceans in the region. The sensors record position, sea pressure, temperature and salinity data as the animals dive up to 60 times a day to depths of 7,000 feet. Since 2004, they’ve gathered more than 300,000 environmental profiles of the sea.

The scientists glue the sensors to elephant seals after immobilizing them on land. (Though it may seem a bit cruel, they fall off when the animals molt naturally after a year or so.) The devices (below) transmit hydrographic information data back to scientists via satellite “like tweeting,” as the animals range widely across the seas. Such information would be prohibitively expensive to collect by humans, even with the recent development of autonomous sea bots. It also gives insight into the elephant seals themselves, which naturally adapt their migration patterns in response to changing climate conditions.

The researchers say the timing of the data dump is serendipitous,”as an increasing number of studies now focus on the importance of data from these remote and inaccessible parts of the sea.” Groups in the consortium have already generated important research on ocean circulation and other topics. However, by disseminating it to scientists (and regular folks) everywhere, it will help generate new research on critical climate change topics like ice cover and, most importantly, future sea levels.

Juul is the e-cig that will finally stop me smoking (I hope)

Juul e-cigarette

I started smoking at 13. To be honest, I can’t even pin the blame on peer pressure. Maybe it was my teenage desire to rebel; maybe I just wanted to look cool. I’m not sure why I started, but I know that I’ve never been able to stop. And I haven’t had a day without a cigarette in at least 14 years. I’ve owned four e-cigarettes over the past three years, and despite my efforts to transition to vaping full-time, none of them have been able to replace tobacco for me. They have nonetheless been a good supplement, filling in when I’m unable, either due to social niceties or because it’s forbidden, to smoke the real thing. Enter Pax Labs, the company behind the excellent loose-leaf vaporizer of the same name, which claims it’s solved all my e-cigarette issues with its first attempt, the $50 Juul.

There are a few things stopping me from vaping full-time, things that Juul (pronounced “jewel”) has to fix to win my affection. First, there’s the fact that it isn’t exactly like the real thing. Vaping feels more like smoking a hookah (water pipe), and the nicotine “high,” for lack of a better word, never reaches the altitude of a Marlboro or Lucky Strike. An e-cig can only ever hold me over. A few hours without a cigarette and, no matter how much I’ve vaped, I’m itching to light one up. Second, it’s all a massive hassle: unscrewing the battery to charge it, drip-feeding juice into the chamber. I’ve spilled that juice on my hands numerous times (I’m a clumsy person), once making myself ridiculously dizzy in the process. There’s also the image thing. I’m not massively vain, but sucking down on a giant whistle is never going to be cool. As proved by its first ad, Juul is trying very hard to be cool.

Pax’s entrant into what is becoming an increasingly crowded market is familiar, but nonetheless unique. The company’s CEO, James Monsees, says this design, and Juul’s existence, came about after it decided current products weren’t up to scratch. “E-cigs have fallen short because they haven’t delivered consumer satisfaction,” he posits. Juul, he believes, is better than smoking. Not just analogous, but better. It’s definitely unique. It looks less like an e-cigarette and more like a USB drive; an incredibly light, rectangular prism with a hole for a capsule (which also acts as a mouthpiece) at one end. Everything feels precisely machined, right down to the neat little charging dock that plugs into your USB port, meaning you won’t need to disassemble or even stop using Juul to charge it; just drop it into the dock, and the magnetic charging pins do the rest. Like the NJOYs and Blus generally reviled by more “serious” vapers, rather than pushing a button, you just toke on the capsule-end of Juul to draw vapor.

Starting this week, Pax is offering Juul capsules (“JuulPods“) in a choice of four autocorrect-hating flavors — Tabaac (tobacco), Miint (mint), Fruut (fruit) and Bruule (crème brûlée). They’re available in a four-pack for $15.99, with each roughly equating to one pack of cigarettes in terms of nicotine content. More flavors are coming, based primarily on user feedback — I’d really like a less-sweet tobacco option — but for now they’re all palatable. Each capsule has an enclosed heating element and wick that prevent overheating and ensure there’s no drop-off when they’re almost empty. But that’s not really the selling point — it’s what’s inside the capsules that’s special.

Juice currently on the market uses freebase nicotine, but that’s not how nicotine exists in the real world. “Nicotine in nature is a compound that wants to form and join with the organic acids and salts you find in tobacco leaves,” Monsees explains. To that end, Pax developed a juice that’s blended with nicotine salts, which supposedly delivers the drug to you in a more similar fashion to combustible cigarettes.

Juul graph

A study showing the rate that nicotine is absorbed into and stays in test subject’s blood.

The image above is from a study (paid for by Pax, but carried out independently) that shows how the salts work. The “projection” you see on the diagram (based on the increase in nicotine from the initial test to what’s in the final capsules) is more or less what I experienced: a nicotine hit almost indistinguishable from a cigarette. And it really does work — whereas regular e-cigs only keep back my cravings for a few hours at a time, Juul almost entirely replaced my smoking. Sadly, I’ve run out of capsules, but until that happened I had gone from smoking 20 to 30 cigarettes per day to smoking 11 over five days. Sure, its vapor isn’t as thick as that produced by some of the mod boxes you can buy, but it’s very similar to regular cigarettes, and the feeling you get from it is superior to that of its contemporaries.

Pax, obviously, wants to sell Juul to everyone who’s currently smoking or vaping something else. I think it’s unlikely to win over those who have agonizingly tinkered to find their perfect e-cigarette, although I’d guess it’ll at least get an inquisitive few to try. Its real target is the millions that buy e-cigs from their local store, or just want to stop smoking. Its founders argue they offer a better experience than anything else on the market. For me, they’ve found the balance — it gives me the hit I need, with none of the fiddly drawbacks I associate with e-cigs. Well, apart from one: I discovered halfway through my week of testing that plugging the Juul into the left port of my MacBook Air puts the laptop into sleep mode. Apparently, the magnets in the charger are too strong and trigger the sensor telling it that its lid is closed. It’s not a huge deal, and Pax says it’s giving users guidance on the matter, but it does limit me to plugging it into the right-side port.

Nespresso won me over, and so has Juul.

An analogy I fell upon for where Juul fits in is the dreaded Nespresso machine. Laughed at by those who obsess over their “real” espresso machines and high-tech presses, it delivers a consistently good experience, way better than you’d get with a spoonful of Folgers instant in the morning, and way more convenient than a full-blown pump. That’s Juul in a nutshell — a beautifully designed system that gets close enough to the real thing for me to settle for the convenience. Nespresso begrudgingly won me over years ago, and Juul has won me over in just a week. I hope I can stick with it and finally kick the habit.

Nvidia CEO sees bright future gaming via Android

Nvidia has had a rough start with Android.  Its first relationship with the OS was through hardware, where Nvidia produced its own mobile SoC, Tegra, for Android phones and tablets.  But where the giant that is Qualcomm practically owned the mobile SoC market, Nvidia had quite a challenge to stand toe-to-toe.  Tegra gained little of the market and wasn’t exactly well received.

Nvidia kept at it nonetheless and this year we were given the beastly Tegra X1 chipset, which was incorporated into the recent SHIELD Android console.

nvidia_shield

I must pause here and reflect on how of a smart move this was.  Not only did Nvidia manage to make a strong contender on an emerging market (Android console gaming), but they also are also repeating what made them successful in the first place, graphics.

While CPU power has peaked out in the mobile space, graphics processing still has room to improve, compared to current-gen gaming consoles from Sony and Microsoft.  And Nvidia also brought Android TV to power their console, merging it together their cloud gaming service GRID, to even do what you can’t yet with the current mobile hardware, by off-loading the processing to super-computing servers.

We believe Android is going to be a major gaming platform, as the PC has become.

NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun Huang

Nvidia CEO, Jen-Hsun Huang, showed confidence about their plan forward at Computex this week, recognizing the potential with Android.  According to Gizmodo, Jen-Hsun Huang said “We believe Android is going to be a major gaming platform, as the PC has become. The PC is a gaming oriented platform [and] because it’s open it became a wonderful gaming system. Android is the OS of the cloud, the OS of the internet. This OS will also someday become an important gaming platform”.

It will be great to see how the investment in Android for the home console pans out in the future, being a monkey wrench into we’ve known gaming consoles to be.

Mega Wins Slots Free review

The Play Store is currently saturated with a plethora of games that vary from every imaginable genre. You have racing games, puzzle games, adventure games, you think it, it’s probably on the Play Store. While this makes finding something to keep you entertained a walk in the park (I know, I know, I could have chosen a better phrase… ) it also makes it difficult to find a game that really stands out. Well, thankfully for you great, fantastic readers (Its okay if your blushing, you great people you) I have taken the quest of throwing myself into the Play Store and sifting through the grains to find the diamond hidden within. Today we are taking a look at Mega Wins Slot Free to see if this casino slots game is worth downloading.

Graphics

mega win seven

Nowadays, no game would be worth it weight in Android bobbleheads if it didn’t have good graphics. I mean, no one wants to stare at an ugly interface filled outdated visuals when they can easily just go and download another game. Well, Mega Wins Slots does not suffer from that malady as it can stand toe to toe with the best of them when it comes to graphical performance. One of the first things that I noticed when I downloaded the game was the super vibrant neon welcome screen that displays when the game connects to its servers. After the game finishes loading you are taken to the main page of Mega Wins Slots where you are able to choose what slot adventure you would like to partake in. From Smoking Guns in the wild west to Eye of Ra, you get a nice selection of slots games to play in and begin your adventure. All of them keep the similar layout of having the slots in the middle, stats on top, and the actual gameplay buttons on the button. Depending on which one you choose, however, will determine the icons that will display and the overall theme. Overall, the game is very visually pleasing as the game characters are all well drawn and have small animations that will play when they are grouped together with other similar toons.

Gameplay

mega win eight

Moving on the actual gameplay, it’s a slot game, so there is not much you are required to to in terms of actual gameplay. You press the spin button and watch the slots turn. A neat feature of Mega Wins Slots though is the ability to choose how many lines you wish the game to recognize when you spin. So, instead of spinning and only having three rows and needing to match three similar songs together, Mega Win Slots lets you choose a plethora of lines. You can have them all match in a vertical line, semi-vertical, horrible, you name it its got it. The only catch is that you need to pay more coins to be able to spin if you have more lines being used.

Speaking of coins, the game runs on virtual gold coins that are given to at the beginning of the game. You are only given a limited amount though, as the whole purpose of the game is to try to win more. If you are ever in need of more coins though you can purchase them of their in app store, but you don’t necessarily have to do so. They give our a plethora of bonus coins every day as part of their daily bonus and the more you play, the more you level up, and you get coins when you do. Also, you can always try to just win more.

Final Thoughts

mega win nine

Mega Wins Slots is a very fun game that I thoroughly enjoyed getting to test out. I recommend it to those that like to live life on the edge and like to take risks, but maybe don’t want to go to Vegas and use real currency. Mega Win Slots will give you the same rush (hopefully) without the risk of having to tell your wife you lost your house and dog because you lost all of your cash playing blackjack.

The International LG G4 gets official TWRP Custom Recovery support

G4_Genuine_Leather

It’s scarcely a day since LG released a tool that made it possible to unlock the International G4‘s bootloader, but that was obviously more than enough time for the developers at TeamWin who have announced that TWRP is officially supported on the handset (H815).

Installing the TWRP custom recovery on your international LG G4 handset will allow you make backups, install mods or flash custom ROM’s, among other things. I can’t emphasize enough the fact that the bootloader unlock tool as well as this newly available TWRP customer recovery is only compatible with the international G4 with model number H815. It’s also a pre-requisite that your G4 be rooted before installing the TWRP recovery.

As always, you should follow the installation guide to the letter. Skipping a step will probably end up with your device being bricked, which no one wants. If you are still keen on installing the TWRP custom recovery to your handset, click the source link below to access the installation guide and to download the recovery image.

If you aren’t sure what rooting is all about, and whether you should root your device or not, check out this handy guide before going any further.

Huawei P8 Lite enters the market targeting premium design and affordability

huawei_p8_lite_launch_front_display_TA

Huawei hosted a private event on Tuesday morning in New York City to unveil the P8 Lite, the latest handset to join the unlocked revolution.

huawei_p8_lite_launch_right_side_TA

The P8 Lite is thin and light, measuring 142.75 x 70.36 x 7.6mm and weighing 131g. The phone is constructed of plastic but it does not look or feel that way. The rear features a metallic look because Huawei used a layered design with a satin coating.

The name of the P8 Lite suggests that it is a watered-down version of the P8. It’s true. Huawei made cuts in certain areas to allow the phone to be an affordable off-contract option. The display only offers 1280×720 resolution. The processor is of the Snapdragon 600 series. The RAM is lowered to 2GB. And internal storage is limited both internally and with the microSD card slot. The P8 Lite, however, does maintain a solid 13MP rear camera and 5MP front-facing camera. None of this makes the P8 Lite a poor phone as it serves its purpose as the watered-down P8.

huawei_p8_lite_launch_rear_TA

Consumers may be a bit worried to see Huawei using Android 4.4.4 KitKat rather than the latest version of Android. I asked a Huawei representative at the private event whether or not there were plans to bring Lollipop to the P8 Lite. The question was basically left unanswered as the representative said Huawei has nothing to say about it.

Key specifications:

  • 5-inch, 1280×720 resolution display
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 octa-core processsor
  • 13MP rear camera, 5MP front camera
  • 2GB of RAM
  • 16GB internal storage with microSD card slot
  • 2200mAh battery
  • Emotion UI 3.0 (Android 4.4.4 KitKat)
  • Dual-SIM support

You can purchase the Huawei P8 Lite starting today for $249, in black or white/gold through GetHuawei.com, Amazon, B&H, Fry’s Electronics, Target.com and other dealer networks. Making the P8 Lite even more affordable is Huawei’s partnership with Affirm. Device purchases of $99 or more through GetHuawei.com can be split into fixed installment plans of three, six, or twelve months. That means you can pay as little as $20.75 per month for the P8 Lite.

Registering with GetHuawei.com from now until June 6 will net “promotional incentives good for discounts on select products.”

Huawei Brings Great Design within Reach with New Unlocked lite Smartphone

New unlocked purchase benefits make P8 lite and other Huawei unlocked devices even more attractive

PLANO, Texas [June 3, 2015]: Huawei, a leading global information and communications technology solutions provider, today launched the Huawei P8 Lite in the U.S., making it possible for U.S. consumers to have premium design and features at an accessible price. Available for just $249.99 USD, the P8 Lite will be availabl as an unlocked device, giving consumers the option to take their phone to the network* of their choice.

“With a perfect balance of style, functionality and value, the P8 Lite gives consumers a premium yet easily accessible device and experience,” said Mr. Zhiqiang Xu, President of Huawei Device USA. “We are expanding our smartphone, wearable and tablet portfiolio to meet U.S. consumers’ needs and are committed to delivering the right devices at the right prices with a tremendous consumer experience.”

Accessible Design
With design and craftsmanship inspired by the company’s premium global flagship devices, Huawei P8 lite’s ultra-slim 7.7mm profile and thin bezels make it perfectly compact and well-balanced in the hand. Demonstrating sophisticated design and quality craftsmanship, the metallic appearance of the phone’s back panel is achieved through a layered design of contrasting hues and a hand-crafted satin coating that feels smooth to touch, but glimmers in direct light.

Accessible Technology
The P8 lite isn’t just beautiful — it’s also elegantly functional. The 5-inch HD Corning Gorilla Glass 3 display is designed for visual clarity and utmost durability. The 13 megapixel rear camera has built-in low light and autofocus capabilities which, along with the multi-frame noise reduction algorithm, ensure photos are clearer and brighter.

In addition to the solid performance and streamlined design, the Huawei P8 offers:

  • 5.0-inch 720p HD screen
  • Powerful Octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 processor
  • Ultra-fast 4G LTE connectivity with support for all US GSM LTE bands
  • Intuitive and easy-to-use Emotion UI 3.0 interface
  • 2200mAh battery with ultra-power saving mode
  • Unique photo capture options including:

    • All Focus: Change the focal point of saved images
    • Ultra Snapshot: access the camera instantly, even from sleep mode
  • 5 megapixel front-facing camera
  • Dual-SIM/SIM+Expandable MicroSD up to 32GB

Transforming the Unlocked Experience
With the launch of the P8 lite, Huawei is transforming consumers’ unlocked purchase experience. While more than 42 percent of consumers use or intend to purchase an unlocked device, there are still a significant barriers that give consumers pause or reason to lack confidence. Among the leading roadblocks to purchasing an unlocked device are concerns about after-sales service, phone price and sales channels. Huawei is addressing all of these concerns by introducing new benefits throughout the unlocked device purchase process.

Huawei is introducing a new two-year warranty on unloked smartphones launched this year, including the SnapTo, introduced in April, and the all new P8 lite. Consumers need only register at GetHuawei.com to receive the warranty’s benefits for an extended term. The two-year warranty joins Huawei’s already strong commitment to post-purchase support, with local customer service, localized repair and a variety of contact channels for consumers.

Though the unlocked purchase model provides more freedom and choice, there is still an up-front cost for the device. Huawei is removing device sticker shock and giving consumers more flexible payment options by partnering with financial services leader Affirm. Now, consumers who purchase devices on GetHuawei.com have the option to select fixed installment plans of three, six and 12-months at the point of sale for device purchases of $99 or more. And once a purchase is made, consumers have the confidence that will arrive as promised and with easily accessible customer support thanks to Huawei’s partnership with trusted fulfillment provider Amazon.

“With the introduction of new unlocked benefits and with close collaboration from our valued partners, Huawei is taking the next step forward to make buying a quality unlocked device worry-free for consumers,” said Xu. “At Huawei, we are committed to not only delivering great devices at the right price, but also the services and support that let consumers purchase our products with confidence.”

Availability
P8 lite is avilable beginning today, June 3, through Huawei’s ecommerce site, GetHuawei.com, Amazon.com, B&H in-store and online, Fry’s Electronics in-store and online, Target.com and various dealer networks. P8 lite will also be coming to BestBuy.com and select Best Buy stores.

In celebration of of GetHuawei’s one-year anniversary, consumers who are registered or register on the website between June 3 and June 6 will receive promotional incentives good for discounts on select products, including the newly launched P8 lite, Mate2, and SnapTo.

Popular Calendar App ‘Fantastical 2’ Now Available for Apple Watch [iOS Blog]

As promised, Flexibits today updated Fantastical 2 for the iPhone to version 2.3, adding support for the Apple Watch. Fantastical 2‘s new Apple Watch app includes a list of all upcoming meetings and appointments, a list of Reminders, a Glance with quick access to a daily schedule, and the ability to add events directly on your wrist.

Flexibits’ co-founder Michael Simmons told MacRumors that the company waited until the Apple Watch was released to begin developing Fantastical 2 for the wrist, in order to design an app with the best possible user experience. “I’m not going to make an Apple Watch app when I’ve never used one,” he said. “I need to see it. You can’t solve a problem if you don’t know what the problem is.”

After experimenting with the existing Calendar app on Apple Watch and brainstorming on how best to translate Fantastical‘s feature set to the wrist, the Flexibits team came up with a simple but useful solution that distills Fantastical‘s core functions into a form suitable for wrist-based interactions that last just seconds.

The key feature in Fantastical 2 for Apple Watch is the Glance, which shows all of a day’s events arranged in a timeline. With the Glance, you get a quick overview of what’s going on in a day, along with information on the next upcoming meeting or appointment.

Tapping on the timeline within the Glance opens the full Fantastical 2 app, where you can get a list of all the events happening for the next two weeks. This improves upon the default Calendar app somewhat, as Apple’s own app only shows a week of events. More detailed information on each event can be accessed with a tap, and scrolling through events in a list can be done with a finger or with the Digital Crown.

fantasticalforapplewatch
If you use Fantastical‘s Reminders feature, tapping “Reminders” at the top of the Apple Watch app will open a list of Reminders you’ve created, where they can be checked off. A force press within the Reminders list will let you add a new to-do task, while a force press in the main view of the app will let you add a new event. Events and Reminders are entered using the Apple Watch’s dictation capabilities.

The Fantastical 2 Apple Watch app can be customized through the iPhone. Users can choose whether to display events and reminders, how many days to display within the app, and what the Glance opens — next event or a list of all events.

fantasticaliphoneapplewatch
Since Fantastical 2 for Apple Watch is bundled into an iPhone update, it’s free for all existing Fantastical 2 users. If you own the iPhone app, you own the Apple Watch app.

Fantastical 2 can be downloaded from the App Store for $4.99. [Direct Link]

‘Resident Evil 4’ secretly adjusted its difficulty for you

Resident Evil 4 is one of the most beloved entries in the survival horror franchise, and the last game before the series moved towards a more bombastic, action-focused style. There are many reasons to love this Leon Kennedy adventure, but one that often goes unrecognised is its dynamic approach to difficulty. As Pocket Gamer‘s Mark Brown explains, Resident Evil 4 would subtly tweak your experience depending on how well you were playing. Enemies would deliver greater damage, for instance, and appear more aggressive if you were easily charging through each area, and some players have suggested that ammo drops would automatically decrease for your preferred weapons. All of this culminated in a game that naturally balanced challenge and progression — you never felt completely safe or in control, but neither did you feel that tricky sections were impossible. As Brown notes, to Capcom’s credit they’ve never confirmed the feature’s existence — all we have are anecdotes and corroborating gameplay footage from the fans.
