Deal: Amazon is selling the Nexus Player for just $70

Best-Media-Streamers-AA-16

Google’s Android TV platform was first announced to the public about a year ago, though the number of devices that run the OS is still very limited. Nvidia recently released its Shield Android TV, which is now available starting at $199.99, though that might be too expensive for users looking to try out the platform for the first time. So if you’re looking for a great entry-level set-top box that runs Android TV, you may want to head on over to Amazon to save some money.

Right now, you can purchase a Nexus Player, the first Android TV set-top box, for just $69.99 on Amazon. While this bundle only comes with the box and the remote, you can buy the Gamepad separately for $40.

The Nexus Player certainly isn’t the most powerful set-top box on the market, but it will probably do just fine for most users out there. We’re not sure how long this deal will last, so be sure to head to the link below before it’s too late!

Huawei partners with Jawbone Up for TalkBand B2 launch

huawei-talkband-b2

At today’s launch of the P8 Lite in the US, Huawei also revealed that the TalkBand B2 will land in the US later this week. It’s imminent arrival in the US isn’t the only surprise however as the company also revealed that the TalkBand B2 will be the first dedicated third-party fitness tracker to integrate with the Jawbone Up fitness platform.

The TalkBand B2 was announced at Mobile World Congress 2015 in February and features a bluetooth headset which docks into the wrist strap. Huawei’s latest wearable works with both iOS and Android and can track your activity – automatically distinguishing between walking, running and cycling – and sleep patterns. The TalkBand B2 previously required you to use Huawei’s companion app to access your fitness data but will be able to integrate with your existing Jawbone Up profile, allowing you to take advantage of Jawbone’s fitness coaching features.

The successor to last year’s TalkBand B1 brings an updated design, improved display and a nicer style but the wearable might not be for everyone; an integrated Bluetooth headset certainly has its uses but headsets are rarely used these days and even then, even fewer people want one on their said.

I’ve personally used the TalkBand B2 for the past couple of months and while the Bluetooth headset certainly has its benefits, it’s not something that I find essential or would actively search for in my next wearable. The fitness tracker automatically recognises your activity type and in use, it does seem to be somewhat accurate; like most current wearables, there are discrepancies but it is on par with other wearables.

While it does have a Bluetooth headset, the TalkBand B2 lacks the heart rate monitoring and smartphone notifications found on other fitness trackers so it certainly won’t appeal to everyone. The B2 is available with a choice of straps – there’s a leather strap version that’s splash-proof while the metal versions are water resistant – in a choice of colors; black metal, gold leather and silver metal.

For Jawbone, the integration of third-party devices means it no longer has to compete on the hardware front. Larger companies such as Fitbit, Xiaomi and Huawei all have the capacity to launch multiple wearables a year and instead of competing with them, Jawbone can leave these companies to produce the hardware while it focuses on the Jawbone Up platform.

The TalkBand B2 might be the first third-party dedicated fitness tracker to integrate with Up but we wouldn’t be surprised to see other devices follow suit. When released later this week, the TalkBand B2 will cost $179 and will be available from GetHuawei.com, Amazon.com and Fry’s, both in-store and online. It will also be available from Best Buy in the near future.

The 4 inch WVGA display offers 800 x 480 pixels resolution at 233 ppi density with 2 points multi-touch and gesture support. It runs on Android KitKat 4.4 – with a planned upgrade to Android Lollipop – and is powered by a dual-core MediaTek processor clocked at 1.0GHz, which is coupled with 512MB RAM and 4GB internal storage; however, you only get 1.8GB of this so you’ll definitely want to expand it using a microSD card.

Under the hood, the OneTouch Pixi 3 comes equipped with an FM Radio, Wi-Fi n, Bluetooth v4.0 and integrated GPS. The removable back cover gives you access to the 1400mAh battery that Alcatel OneTouch claim offers up to 350 hours standby and 8 hours talk-time over 3G.

The Pixi 3 is available to buy from O2 and you’ll need to pick a Pay & Go tariff to go with the handset. There’s a range of bundles to choose from, offering everything from inclusive minutes and data to international calls. You can buy the Pixi 3 here.

Tidal delivers desktop app, refreshed UI and student pricing

Tidal Launch Event NYC #TIDALforALL

Jay Z’s music-streaming service, Tidal, relies heavily on bringing exclusive content to subscribers. But it knows more features are needed to complement that. Today, in an effort to make the overall experience better for its users, Tidal is launching desktop apps for both Mac and Windows — albeit in beta form. There’s also an updated user interface on mobile and the web, along with the new applications, which comes with extra personalization options, a simplified menu and improved search results. Ticketmaster support has been added too, letting people view artists’ tour dates and purchase concert tickets directly from the music service’s website or apps; Spotify does something similar through Songkick.

Better yet, Tidal’s introducing a new pricing scheme for students. The plan, scheduled to launch next week, will let anyone with a valid .edu email address get a subscription for half the regular price. Tidal currently offers two tiers: $10 and $20. If you’re already a member, though, you can grab the Mac (10.6 and later) or Windows (7 and above) apps from the source link below.

YouTube’s Music Insights tool can monitor artists’ popularity

YouTube has released a new tool for artists, one those truly hungry for stardom can use to keep a close eye on how their popularity is growing. The data tool is called “Music Insights,” and it shows users the combined views of the videos they upload and of those added by their fans, claimed via the website’s Content ID system. It also shows them what their top tracks are and from where their views are coming from, which could help them map out a future tour. For instance, Ed Sheeran is apparently hugely popular Philippines, with his top four cities in the country contributing roughly 97 million views to his overall.

He recently held a concert in one of those cities in an arena that can sit around 18,000 people, and tickets were sold out. On the other hand, knowing where they’re not trending, so to speak, could be invaluable in concocting a plan to reach a wider audience. Music Insights is available right now to the top 10,000 artists on the website. Those who don’t make the cut but still want to follow in the footsteps of Justin Bieber don’t have to worry, though: YouTube’s rolling it out to more people bit by bit.

Showtime reportedly announcing standalone streaming this week

Showtime’s standalone streaming service was tipped back in November, and now it appears we may be close to the official reveal. Variety reports CBS is prepping to announce the subscription option to temp those who’ve cut the cord as soon as this week — six months after CEO Les Moonves discussed the service’s 2015 arrival on an earnings call. What’s more, like HBO’s offering, it’ll reportedly be an Apple exclusive at launch before opening up to other platforms and streaming gadgets later on. HBO Now, that cable networks standalone service, debuted in April for $15/month. No word on how much Showtime’s subscription plan will cost, or what it’ll be called, but it wouldn’t be a surprise if the asking price was the same. CBS is no stranger to the streaming boom, launching the $6 per month CBS All Access option last fall that brought with it live TV in select markets. While Showtime may not have the roster of powerhouse series like Game of Thrones, its roster includes popular shows like Homeland, Nurse Jackie, Masters of Sex and more.

‘Teletubbies’ to return with tablet tummies

You wouldn’t think that technology would have infected the primary colored world of children’s TV, but even the Teletubbies have been forced to move with the times. The forthcoming remake of the stoner-favorite show sees the amorphous blobs ditch their stomach-mounted televisions for “touchscreen devices.” Naturally, in the real world, it’s still a square of grey felt stitched onto the costume, but characters will now interact with this tech in a way that’s familiar to kids.

Whereas you could keep the kids of 1998 entertained by dumping them in front of PBS, modern children are slightly more sophisticated. In fact, most of them either spend their days swiping back and forth across your smartphone’s home screen, or have a kiddie-tablet of their very own. In fact, when you combine that with the embarrassment of age-appropriate TV shows on services like YouTube Kids and DirecTV Kids, Teletubbies seems almost archaic.

Apropos of nothing, Teletubbies is set in a post-apocalyptic paradise where a group of amorphous, sexless blobs eat a strange yellow liquid for sustenance. Living in a bunker, a computer monitors their every move while barking out oblique orders from a series of speakers that cover the landscape. Does anyone else think that there’s more than a few similarities with the plot of Harlan Ellison’s horrifying short story I Have No Mouth, Yet I Must Scream? Now that I’ve worked that out, I think I need a lie down.

Huawei announces budget friendly P8 lite In US

Nowadays budget-friendly phones are in trend as they attract a lot of customers. All the companies are making  budget-friendly phones now. Today the Chinese giant Huawei is following this path and announced the Huawei P8 lite, a younger brother to the Huawei P8.

The term “budget-friendly” does not mean that the phone`s specifications are low-end. It offers pretty good specifications for its price point. The Phone sports a plastic body as compared to P8 which sports a full Metal-body. It has the same rectangular design surrounded by the chrome frame. The power and volume buttons are on the right side and are easily reachable. All the ports are at their regular positions, 3.5 mm headphone jack on top and micro-USB on the bottom along with single speaker and microphone.

The phone also has Qualcomm`s tru-octa core Snapdragon 615 processor paired with 2GB RAM  as most of the budget-friendly phones are consisting  of these days. The phone has 16GB onboard storage which can be further expanded via a micro-SD card up to 32GB. The battery is a 2200 mAh non – removable which can be a down-side for some people. The Screen is a 5- inch 720p display resulting in a pixel density of 294ppi. The phone is running Android Kitkat with Emotion-UI on top, even after several months of Android Lollipop’s launch. In optics department the phone consists of a 13-megapixel rear facing camera and a 5-megapixel camera for Selfie lovers. Huawei P8 is priced at $250 and is available at all the retail stores as well as Huawei’s own website.

In my opinion, the phone boasts pretty decent specifications for its price but for me KitKat is now old and there are other choices available in the market which offer better specs. For people who want to consider their choices they can look into Alcatel Onetouch Idol 3 and Asus Zenfone 2.

Battle of Toys: an easy to play fighting game (review)

battle of toys logoHave your ever imagined what would happen if toys came alive? Well, this is not Toy Story. How about raging toys with heated battles, beating the plastic parts off each other? Sounds cool, doesn’t it? Battle of Toys is exactly what you need.

A 3D turn based battle game which will take you on adventure filled trip to the world of toys. Starting off with one toy, players can build up their collection buying from a wide selection of killer toys with a huge selection of upgrades and costumes to improve the attack power. The controls are very simple and require reflex based actions to execute them successfully.

Players enter into a 30 second battle and are required to stop the indicator in one of the green zones to trigger an attack. There are three indicator styles that appear randomly in battle. It also contains several interactive mini-games, that pop-up to help maximize the damage of a combo after triggering an attack.

Since there is no defensive ability in the game, players have the option to switch characters mid-battle allowing a team of up to 6 toys, which can be strategically used to win the battle.

battle of toys (3)

Each battle earns the player some coins and sometimes, the more desired, diamonds. Different battle locations keep up the spice of the game. Difficulty level of the game can be adjusted to gain greater coin rewards, but there is no indicator telling how the current toy will fare in the battle. Upgrades and special combos are a must as players progress through the story.

New toys can be purchased using the coins earned in the battles, but the best toys can be purchased by using a large number of diamonds only (bought using in-app purchases) which seems a bit pushy. Even though there is a leaderboard, there is no multiplayer option to play with friends or have a random online battle.

battle of toys (6)

Although, it lacks a definitive storyline, the game is still fun to play. Battle of Toys is simply a fast paced fighting game without the complexities of similar titles like Injustice or Mortal Kombat, which contain elaborate upgrades and exhaustive gameplay. Nevertheless, its a good way to kill time and beat some toys in the process.

What we liked:

  • Quick to start playing
  • Graphics are nice
  • Controls are simple and easy to learn
  • Enjoyable gameplay

What needs improvement:

  • More ways to earn diamonds
  • Multiplayer support
  • Character customization
  • No definitive storyline
