EA’s subscription-gaming service launches promising early access to ‘Madden 15’

EA’s all-you-can-eat games service has launched, and there’s a bonus if you’re a fan of American Football. The developer has announced that it’s only those who pay for EA Access that’ll be able to play Madden NFL 15 before its launch on August 26th. Normally, of course, the company would have released a cross-platform demo to stir up demand — but EA told Polygon that the demo was axed to keep developers focused on the main game. In addition to five days worth of early access to the title, EA Access users will be able to play FIFA 14, Battlefield 4 and Peggle 2 to their hearts content, as well as saving 10 percent on purchases of the company’s games. Is that enough for you to part with your cash, or do, like Sony, feel that the service isn’t worth it?

This camera can snap chemical reactions at a trillionth of a second

You know those high-speed cameras used to film mesmerizing ultra slo-mo videos? They’re downright slow compared to this one developed by researchers from The University of Tokyo and Keio University in Japan. The 12-man science team has just revealed an extremely speedy camera that can take pictures of chemical reactions (in burst mode, as those are impossible to capture in a single shot) at 450 x 450 pixels. It’s called the Sequentially Timed All-optical Mapping Photography or STAMP cam, and it can capture consecutive images at a rate of one per every one-trillionth of a second. To note, other high-speed cameras capture one image per every one-billionth of a second. The device is supposed to be 1,000 times faster than comparable models and has even managed to snap a picture of heat conduction (a process that takes, oh, 1/6th the speed of light) during a test.

Its potential applications are pretty limited at this point, since the current prototype’s humongous at one square meter in size. STAMP’s creators aim to shrink it down in the future, though that might take time, seeing as it took them three years to get to this point. If and when they do succeed, the camera could be used in medicine to advance ultrasonic therapy and to better understand laser processing in the production of cars and semi-conductors. Wondering how STAMP can take multiple pictures in a very, very short amount of time? According to the team’s paper recently published in Nature:

The principle of this method — ‘motion picture femtophotography’ — is all-optical mapping of the target’s time-varying spatial profile onto a burst stream of sequentially timed photographs with spatial and temporal dispersion.

If you’d like to savor every technical detail on how STAMP works, though, make sure to head over to the journal for a longer read.

Apple’s new iPads will come with anti-glare displays, says Bloomberg

Apple is set to launch not only new iPhones and a possible wearable soon, but also a new line of iPads, according to Bloomberg. Its sources told it that a full-sized, 9.7-inch iPad is now being mass-produced for a launch near the end of the quarter, and that a 7.9-inch iPad mini will arrive a few months later. If the rumor pans out, it wouldn’t be too mind-blowing: after all, the iPhone 5s was launched last year on September 10th, with the iPad Air and mini coming a bit more than a month later. However, one interesting new tidbit did emerge: the new iPads will have an anti-reflection screen, a big change from past models. That would make sense if Apple used either anti-glare Sapphire displays or Gorilla Glass — as Corning is working on less reflective (and anti-bacterial) displays too.

The rumor mill has pegged the launch of the iPhone 6 for September 9th, almost exactly a year after the last model. That event could be chockablock, given that both a 4.7- and 5.5-inch model are expected, so a separate iPad launch event would make sense. A smartwatch is also rumored to be coming in October, possibly at the same time as one or both iPads. That would mean a pretty busy couple of months for Apple, but keep in mind that it’s all still utter speculation at this point.

Cyborg arm made of Lego can flex its fingers and shake hands

It certainly isn’t the first robotic arm made out of Lego that we’ve seen, but this particular one can actually be worn and easily controlled by the user. According to its creator, Diavo Voltaggio, the arm was made using Lego Mindstorms EV3, which is a software-and-hardware kit for DIY robots. He says the machine is pretty straightforward: it has four buttons connected to four motors that control each finger. Pressing a button flexes the corresponding finger, while releasing it relaxes the finger, as well. Voltaggio calls this cyborg limb the Mark VI, as it’s the sixth one he’s built, thus far — he disassembled the first five, so he could learn from them and make better models going forward. As a result, it’s much sturdier than its predecessors, though it’s also much heavier with all its braces and battery pack.

The Mark VI has won Best Mindstorms creation at a recent BrickFair Lego convention, where Voltaggio demonstrated what it can do by shaking a lot of people’s hands, as you can see in the videos below. Its creator plans to build more iterations for future BrickFairs, though, so you might still get to see the arm for yourself.

Government forms digital task force to avoid future Healthcare.gov disasters

US-POLITICS-HEALTH

If former Googler Mikey Dickerson and his team could fix that HealthCare.gov nightmare last year, then they can certainly fix any other faulty government website. That’s likely what authorities were thinking when they decided to hire this group full time to form the new US Digital Service team. They’re supposed to establish digital standards that government agencies should follow, among other things. But, in a nutshell, the the task force’s duty is to identify and fix shoddy government websites and inject features that’ll actually make people want to visit and use them. Dickerson, who’ll serve as the team lead after leaving his post as Google’s Site Reliability Manager, told The New York Times that mending HealthCare.gov was a life-changing experience, so he couldn’t say no to the government’s offer.

In addition to introducing the team, the administration has also launched the Digital Services Playbook, which contains pointers for government agencies to follow. These pointers are made up of the best business practices from both private and public sectors, such as “Bring in experienced teams” (which could’ve avoided the HealthCare.gov fiasco in the first place) and “Use data to drive decisions.” Finally, in order to avoid any shady dealings, the government has also come up with the TechFAR Handbook. This one details the correct process of buying goods and services (say, hiring someone outside the Digital Service team to tweak a website) from private sectors.

Apple In Talks to Rollout HealthKit to Medical Professionals Across U.S.

Apple is preparing to rollout its Healthkit development tools to health professionals across the U.S., and has been discussions with health providers at Mount Sinai, Cleveland Clinic, John Hopkins, and Allscripts to use the new system, reports Reuters.

Apple is said to be pushing Healthkit and its Health app as being an all-in-one solution for medical professionals to store patient data like blood pressure, pulse, and weight. Apple is also hoping that physicians will use the available data to improve diagnostics and treatment decisions. The company is also looking to partner with electronic health records provider Epic Systems to integrate its software and services.

healthimprovements
The article notes that Apple is likely to face challenges in the mobile health data field due to privacy and regulatory requirements. Apple’s Health app and Healthkit development tools were originally introduced at this year’s WWDC conference this past July. The Health app allows users to keep track and input several different health metrics measured by various devices, and can also allow an at-a-glance view of overall health with the aggregated data. The HealthKit tool for developers can be incorporated into health and fitness apps to access health data stored within the health app.

Both Health and HealthKit will be shipping as a part of Apple’s new iOS 8 mobile operating system this fall.

Up to 23 million active Twitter accounts are bots

Twitter’s said its active user base is growing, but not every account that’s active is necessary a flesh-and-blood human. Alongside those verified accounts of the stars, there’s all kinds of bots that use the service to deliver completely stupid nonsense, sudden (urgent!) sale news and even earthquake reports — well, some have their uses. Twitter’s now updated its filing, noting that bot accounts total up to 8.5 percent of its active user count at the end of June. That’s roughly 23 million tweeters that aren’t human – and probably aren’t going to be clicking on that ad for Innovative Cloud Storage Solutions any time soon.
