Microsoft Research project turns a smartphone camera into a cheap Kinect
Microsoft’s been awfully busy at this year’s SIGGRAPH conference: <embers of the company’s research division have already illustrated how they can interpret speech based on the vibrations of a potato chip bag and turn shaky camera footage into an experience that feels like flying. Look at the list of projects Microsofties have been working on long enough, though, and something of a theme appears: These folks are really into capturing motion, depth and object deformation with the help of some slightly specialized hardware.
Consider the work of researchers from Microsoft Research’s Redmond and Cambridge outposts — they figured out a way to turn a run-of-the-mill 2D camera like the one embedded in your phone or perched atop your monitor into an infrared camera usable for capturing depth data, sort of like a Kinect. The team made working depth sensors out of a tweaked Android smartphone and a Microsoft webcam, and both were able to track a user’s hands and face with aplomb, making them awfully interesting (and relatively cheap) hacks for tinkerers who want to create and test gesture-centric projects without much hassle.
Yet another project saw a team of researchers develop their own RGB-depth camera out of off-the-shelf parts. Why? So they could figure out a way to meld it with software to capture 3D models of people and objects that deform, shift and shimmy in real-time. Imagine holding an inflatable ball in the palm of your hand — it’d be a piece of cake for an RGBd camera to capture it and for modeling software to render it as a sphere. Now imagine squeezing that ball; imagine the bulges and depressions that take shape as your grip tightens. Between their camera and their software, these researchers have managed to create deformable models much faster than before; it might not be long before such objects wind up in your next frag session.

California’s smartphone kill switch bill is about to become law
After a brief battle, California’s smartphone kill switch bill is on the cusp of becoming a bona fide law. The measure has passed its final Senate vote 27 to 8, leaving just the Governor’s signature before it takes effect. For the most part, it’s the same bill that we saw in May — the biggest change is an exemption for selling older devices that can’t “reasonably be reengineered” to incorporate the remote lockdown feature.
The soon-to-be law is important, although it may not make as big an impact as you might think. Big phone makers like Apple, HTC and Samsung have already agreed to implement kill switches, and Minnesota has already enacted similar legislation. This just makes it harder for companies to pass on the technology — they risk losing a lot of sales in the Golden State if they don’t give you an easy way to block access to a stolen device.

Apple Suppliers Gearing Up to Produce New iPads, Larger Model to Feature Anti-Reflective Coating
Apple’s suppliers have already begun producing the next-generation iPad Air and Retina iPad mini, reports Bloomberg. Production for the 9.7-inch iPad Air 2 is underway and according to the site’s sources, the tablet will debut towards the end of the third quarter or early in the fourth quarter. Production of the Retina iPad mini 2 is also said to be beginning soon.
August production dates for both tablets are in line with rumors that have suggested the new iPads will be unveiled at an October event that follows Apple’s September 9 iPhone event.
iPad Air 2 Mockup
Apple’s iPad Air 2 may see some manufacturing issues that restrict available supply, however, due to a new anti-reflection coating that’s being added to the tablet. The coating is said to make the iPad’s screen easier to read.
Output of the larger iPad may be restricted by manufacturing complications related to the use of a new anti-reflection coating, which Apple plans to add to the device to make the display easier to read, said one of the people.
According to recent rumors, the iPad Air 2 and the second-generation Retina iPad mini will both feature form factors that are largely the same as Apple’s existing iPad Air and Retina mini. The iPad Air may see some minor design tweaks including a new speaker grille with a single row of larger holes and a slightly recessed set of volume buttons.
Both tablets are expected to get upgraded A8 processors that are both faster and more efficient and Touch ID fingerprint sensors. The iPad Air may also gain an improved 8-megapixel camera.![]()

HTC’s big, budget-minded Desire 816 phone reaches the US on August 12th
If you’ve been intrigued by HTC’s big-yet-affordable Desire 816, you no longer have to go through an importer to get one in the US. The 5.5-inch Android smartphone will be available through Virgin Mobile on August 12th for $299 contract-free. Nothing has changed apart from the support for Virgin’s network, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing — while we’re not fans of the cameras, the 816 is a good deal if you want a large display at a low price (and haven’t scored a OnePlus One invitation). Don’t despair if you want something smaller or cheaper, either. AT&T recently launched the 4.7-inch Desire 610 for $200 on prepaid GoPhone service (free on a regular contract), so you have at least one other option for a modern HTC phone if the One and One Remix are too rich for your blood.

Lenovo Yoga 10 HD+: Is it a big enough improvement to warrant the Purchase? [Review]
When Lenovo released the Yoga 8 and the Yoga 10 there wasn’t a heck of a lot of excitement around them. The specs weren’t “top-tier” and the screen resolution of both tablet were the same, 1280 x 800. Needless to say, that resolution looked just fine on the Yoga 8, but the larger Yoga 10.1 looked pretty pixelated. At $259.00 (currently) and battery life hitting the 18 hour marker for just usage, I felt it was a great deal anyways. Although I did wish, and so did many others, that the screen was a bit more hi-res. Lenovo heard the cries and have since released a revamped version of the tablet with a follow-up version, the Yoga 10.1 HD+.
Quite a few things changed in the HD+ variant besides just the screen. The overall tablet has a number of external differences as well as a couple internal changes. On the screen side of things though they kicked it up from the 1200 x 800 resolution to 1920 x 1200. As you can see in the image below, it is a drastic improvement to how to it looks. Everything is much more crisp and arguably, this is exactly what they should have launched the first time around. Not sure if you can see the difference between the screenshots or not, but hopefully you can.
Yoga 10.1 HD+ screenshot
Yoga 10.1 first version tablet screenshot
Moving along though, we can see that the rear stand has also changed. It is slightly thicker and is a bit longer. This helps the balance of the tablet when in stand mode and gives you a bit more flexibility with angles that you couldn’t so easily achieve with the shorter, more stubby, stand on the original Yoga 10.1. It also lets it sit a bit more vertical than its predecessor and gives it a better center of gravity to allow for more viewing angles without toppling.
Yoga 10 HD+ sitting to the right.
Under the stand, where the SD card goes, they have incorporate a door that covers the slot. It is just a thin strip of plastic that clicks into place. It is a nice addition, but not all that necessary in my book.
The HD+ power button that is found on the site is also much stiffer. You don’t have to press it in as far to get the tablet to turn on and off. You can also the camera difference simply from the outside. The original offered a 5MP where as the newer one offers an 8MP.
Internally the processor was also changed out. They moved from the MediaTech 1.2GHz quad-core processor to a Qualcomm 400 quad-core 1.60GHz processor. Lenovo also doubled up from the 1Gb of RAM to 2GB of RAM. Even with all the changes, the tablet only gained a small amount of weight going from 1.3 pounds to 1.38 pounds. Having the unique ability to have both the new and old tablet on hand, I can tell you that I can’t feel the weight difference at all.
Sound:
I do have to touch on the sound simply because the tablet boasts the Dolby Digital Surround sound branding, software and dual front facing speakers. The original Yoga 10 also offered the same thing. Interestingly enough, the sound is dramatically improved on the HD+. Like, night and day different even without toggling any of the Dolby settings.
Other Software Enhancements
Software wise they also made a few changes. The HD+ is still on Android started out on Android 4.2 but received an update to Android 4.4 fairly recently. A new multi-window function has been added to the HD+ base software. It is pretty cool, even though a little laggy. To use it you just tap on your multitask button at the bottom, then you can drag up your most recent apps and create up to 4 panes. You can also hit the small icon on the top right of the list and drag specific apps up.
You can long press on that center button and resize in any direction based on your needs. A quick tap on it provides you options to close individual panes, add a pane or enlarge a specific pane that is active. The active pane has a blue outline around it and can be controlled independently from the rest. Meaning you can have music playing and a YouTube video streaming while writing an email. If you do so desire.
Lenovo also made a few icon design changes and included a few other apps like SECUREit HD. It is essentially a security app that lets you free up device memory, block ads, manage your apps, and set individual permissions per app on the device.
Do the upgrades make it better or worse?
That is a fairly tricky question. One would think that a switch to a Qualcomm processor and doubling the RAM would have a significant improvement in operations. While I am still getting the same great battery life, the tablet has some noticeable lag between screens, apps and during the multi-window use. I was kind of expecting it, so I wasn’t all that surprised. The build quality, design and look are fantastic and have always been something that I loved about most Lenovo products. There have been a few questionable devices in my day that I have seen. Even with the clunky skin and the noticeable lag issues, it performs well. By that I mean that after your game or app is open things run pretty smoothly. A few changes in the developer settings and a new home replacements, like Nova, makes things a little better.
Overall thoughts on the Lenovo Yoga 10.1 HD+ and tablets in general
I have always felt that a tablet is purchased for a specific purpose or need for the user’s life. The Yoga line isn’t out there to compete with the Note Pro or the iPads. It is out there to compete in the mid-range market for users who are more media centric and is geared more towards watching movies, TV shows, reading books and casual browsing. In my case, the tablet has been used on a number of road trips for the kids to watch movies and for playing some Battlefield 4 Commander late at night in my bed. The battery life shines and easily makes it a day or longer depending on your use. Having the SD card slots makes it easy to load it up with plenty of movies and books for ages. Not to mention the tablets internal storage is 32GB out the gate. I don’t feel the stand is gimmicky at all. It is actually extremely useful and takes the “holding” out of the picture.
As for the price tag, Lenovo has it set at $349.99 right now directly through Lenovo. It is well worth that price tag for the right individual. Those looking for a bigger screen for media uses, car trips, plane rides and more that don’t need or want something lightning fast that dies 5 hours into the day.

Apple Launches Email Ad Campaign Focusing on Productivity
Apple today began a new email ad campaign drawing customer attention to the iPad’s productivity capabilities by highlighting several different Business-oriented apps for the tablet, including Pages, Numbers, Keynote and Microsoft Office for iPad.
iPad is the perfect way to be more productive than ever. Its powerful apps are designed to take full advantage of the things only iPad can do. So you’ll have everything you need to do what matters most.
The email advertises how customers can create documents, spreadsheets, and presentations with Apple’s own iWork software, available for free with every new iPad, and it also points towards Microsoft Office, which was released for the iPad in March.
Competitors like Microsoft and Samsung have launched aggressive ad campaigns attempting to position the iPad as a content consumption device without the multitasking capabilities or the software to allow it to serve as a true PC replacement, but Apple has fired back in recent months with an equally aggressive “Your Verse” iPad campaign that shows the iPad being used in hundreds of different ways for a variety of vital tasks that range from composing to choreographing to mountaineering.
Microsoft used the lack of Office software on the iPad as a main advertising point for its Surface tablets throughout 2013, before releasing an iPad version of the productivity software earlier this year. Microsoft has actually seen enormous success with Office for iPad, garnering 35 million downloads as of July, suggesting millions of customers are using their iPads for productivity-oriented tasks like creating documents and presentations.
In addition to sending out emails, Apple launched a promotion for several different productivity apps in the App Store last week, offering discounts on apps like Fantastical, Clear, Notability, Scanner Pro, and more. That sale lasts until August 14.
The company has also been continuing to expand its “Your Verse” advertising campaign, releasing two new stories earlier this morning highlighting Chinese electropop group Yaoband and Detroit Slow Roll city bike ride cofounder and organizer Jason Hall.
Apple’s focus on productivity comes just weeks after the company inked a deal with IBM that will see the two companies teaming up to push for more iPads in enterprise environments.![]()
