Polaroid’s cute Cube camera lets you record video just about anywhere

Polaroid Cube camera

You can stick action cameras in many places, but they’re still not that portable; you probably won’t (or can’t) shove one in your pocket in case you want to document an adventure. You can certainly try that with Polaroid’s new Cube camera, though. While its building block-like design is a little bit cutesy, it also lets you record 1080p wide-angle videos seemingly anywhere — a built-in magnet lets the Cube cling to any metal surface, and even the mounting kits are tiny enough to come along on many trips. The cam depends on microSD cards for storage and only lasts for 90 minutes of video on a charge, but that still means that it can handle a quick mountain bike expedition or a few laps around the racetrack. Just be patient if you like the notion of cuboid movie capture. Photojojo is taking pre-orders for the $100 Cube today, but it won’t ship until late September.

Vote for which new shows Amazon should give the green light

Amazon may be fighting with Hachette and Disney, but it’s still got enough energy to try and beat Netflix at its own game. The bookseller has announced its third pilot season, asking members of the public to determine which of five new original TV series will be given a full series by Bezos and his chums. This time around, three comedies and two hefty dramas will be screened on the retailer’s website on August 28th in the US and the UK, of which the most praised and watched will arrive on Prime Instant Video in due course. If you’re excited at the prospect of playing armchair TV executive, we’ve prepared a print-out-and-keep guide for what to expect.

First up, there’s The Cosmopolitans, in which a group of mostly white, privileged Americans wander around Paris looking for “love and friendship in a foreign city.” Adam Brody and Chloë Sevigny star, and we imagine it’ll be great, if you like obscure music, going to Paris and whining about how no-one “gets” you, you know?

Second in the batting order is Hand of God, a meaty hour-long drama in which Ron Perlman plays a hard-drinking judge who suffers a mental breakdown after his family his destroyed. He decides to take his revenge, and is aided in his quest by messages and visions that he believes have been sent to him by God. It all sounds tremendously exciting, but it’s directed by Marc Forster, who ruined Quantum of Solace, and therefore we won’t get excited lest he breaks our hearts once again.

Thirdly, there’s Hysteria, in which Mena Suvari plays a neurologist in Austin, Texas, who has to stop a weird psychological disease that’s spread through friendship. Let’s just hope that no-one in the show has ever heard of Facebook, or we’re all doomed. Weird premise aside, it’s been created by Shaun Cassidy, who created American Gothic, so this one is likely to be first on our watch list.

The second half-hour comedy on the list is Really, in which a group of hard-charging suburban Chicago couples try to grasp onto their dwindling youth. It sounds a little like the premise of thirtysomething, in which a group of people in their late-thirties try to grasp onto their dwindling youth — although that show was set in Philadelphia, so they’re probably completely different.

Finally, there’s Red Oaks, a coming-of-age comedy set in the “go-go” 80s that’s “equal parts hijinks and heartfelt.” We’re not sure what that means, but presumably every time someone makes a joke about Molly Ringwald, or leg warmers, or mobile phones, they have to hug someone and cry.

Microsoft’s found a way to smooth out your GoPro shakycam footage

GoPro footage is great when well-shot, but the jittery results from less-talented individuals can induce nausea or seizures. If you’re interested in doing sped-up time lapse shots, however, Microsoft researchers have created an algorithm that makes them video game-smooth. Their technique is not like regular video stabilization, however. Instead, the “Hyperlapse” method first calculates a 3D camera path and rough geometry of the scene. Then it creates a smooth new optimized camera path, which is used to stitch and blend existing frames to create new output frames. The team has created several sample videos as shown below, and we’ve got to hand it to them — despite some artifacts, the final results feel like nearly like flying.

Skully’s Android-powered smart motorcycle helmet goes up for pre-order

Skully's augmented reality helmet

If you take your motorbike rides seriously enough to want a smart heads-up display in your helmet, you can now do something about it. Skully has just launched a crowdfunding campaign for its Android-powered head protector, now named the AR-1; plunk down $1,399 and you should be one of the first to get the wearable when it ships in May 2015. That’s both a lot of money and a long time to wait, but Skully is betting that you’ll like the data you get while on the road. As promised, the helmet projects navigation, a rear camera view and riding info on your visor. Voice commands let you keep a grip on the handlebars, and smartphone pairing gets the headgear online. The price goes up to $1,499 if you wait until launch to make a purchase, so you may want to commit early if you’re determined to augment your two-wheeled adventures.

Will Steam challenge iTunes and Google Play for your media-buying cash?

The only thing that’s better than using Steam is digging through its source code to see what’s coming in the future. On a recent trawl through the digital store’s inner workings, Twitter’s @SteamDB found the words film, tvseries and music as app types that people could, theoretically, buy. If so, then Valve might be ready to get serious about Steam’s ability to rival other digital storefronts from Google and Apple, which is logical, since Valve’s platform has around 75 million registered users. Of course, these options might be just be tweaks to existing functionality, since game soundtracks and one movie are already available on the service. Hell, it could even be an amendment to the Steam Music Beta, enabling people to binge on locally-stored content while playing — but we’d give props to the person who could enjoy DOTA 2 and Breaking Bad at the same time.

First look at the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 appears very Familiar

First look at the Samsung Galaxy Note 4Just hours after packaging for the device was allegedly spotted, here is our first look at the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 in the flesh. Samsung hinted earlier this year that their next Galaxy Note device would adopt a ‘new form factor’; whatever that meant, it doesn’t appear to have drastically changed the device overall, but we do see the same chamfered metallic edges that have been recently adopted by the Galaxy Alpha. As expected, the Note 4 has quite a few hallmarks of its smaller brother, the Galaxy S5, including what looks like the same heart rate sensor and USB 3.0 slot in the base. Naturally, the Note 4 looks like it will also have a S-Pen. From the new, more rectangular design of the Note 4 and Galaxy Alpha, it looks like Samsung is happy taking this new design ideology forward.

First look at the Samsung Galaxy Note 4We’ve heard rumours that the screen of the Note 4 is going to be a 5.7-inch, Quad HD display and that it’s going to house either the new Exynos 5433 or Snapdragon 805 processor (depending on your region). We won’t have long to wait to find out the truth though as the Samsung UNPACKED event it is expected to be announced at is happening on September 3rd at IFA 2014.
