Google backs an undersea cable that will give the internet a big speed boost

Working on undersea cable

The internet is quickest when you have a direct connection to the sites you’re trying to reach, but that’s a daunting challenge in the Pacific — undersea network cables can cost hundreds of millions of dollars. It’s therefore good to hear that Google and a host of telecom giants (China Mobile, China Telecom, Global Transit, KDDI and SingTel) are backing FASTER, a $300 million fiber optic cable that runs between Japan and the US. As the name implies, it’s all about speeding up data transfers between Asia and the Americas; the cable should offer a whopping 60 terabits per second of bandwidth between the two regions, which makes even Google’s gigabit home internet service look puny by comparison. You won’t see the difference until FASTER is finished in the second quarter of 2016, but it promises to improve the internet as a whole when it’s ready. Don’t be surprised if foreign multiplayer games and video streams get noticeably smoother within a couple of years.

The ambient sounds of sci-fi will make you ditch that white noise machine

Blade Runner

Sometimes you just need to clear your mind from all distractions and tune out the rest of the world. Sure, you could rely on a playlist or a regular ol’ white noise machine, but that doesn’t do much to boost your geek cred. Thanks to YouTuber crysknife007, you can now zone out with ambient sounds from Blade Runner, Battlestar Galactica and more. Whether its the hum of the engines from the Millennium Falcon or Nostromo, there are plenty of options to choose from with all of them providing a 12-hour loop that’s sure to last a workday. Of course, you turn off all the lights and pretend your soaring through space, too.

OnePlus One camera update helps you take sharper, noise-free photos

OnePlus One camera

The 13-megapixel camera on the OnePlus One is fine for the money, but not spectacular; it frequently captures soft, noisy snapshots if the lighting conditions aren’t ideal. Don’t worry, though, as the fledgling phone maker has rolled out a camera update that can (sometimes) give you the photo quality you’ve been missing. Much like what you saw in the Oppo Find 7, the One’s new Clear Image feature takes a burst of 10 photos and stitches them together into a cleaner, higher-resolution picture. You can see the results for yourself below — a muddy, grainy photo of a wall clock (shown on the left) suddenly becomes clear. OnePlus is even promising reasonable file sizes, so you won’t immediately regret buying the 16GB One instead of its 64GB counterpart.

Clear Image isn’t a cure-all, of course. It won’t help if there’s significant motion from you or your subjects, and it’s not going to produce a usable image if there isn’t enough light to begin with. However, the biggest limitation may simply be getting the phone in the first place — it’d be great if OnePlus could replace its invitation-only sales model as quickly as it replaces camera apps.

Oppo N1 Mini launched in India for INR 26,990

After much speculation, Oppo has finally launched the N1 Mini in India, which is the smaller version of the popular N1 phablet by the Chinese electronics firm. The biggest USP of the smartphone is its 13MP rotating camera with Sony IMX214 stacked CMOS sensor,  f/2.0 aperture and LED Flash. The rotating feature makes the only camera present in the device double up as the selfie camera.

Additionally, one can also purchase O-Click – the remote control that lets you remotely click images on the Oppo N1 Mini. O-Click is free with the N1 but Oppo seems to have used a cost cutting measure for the N1 Mini. Oppo seems to be targeting the young generation in India which wants to have all the features of a high-end smartphone without splurging a lot.

Oppo N1 Mini

“We strive to give users what they really look for. OPPO N1 Mini stems from this philosophy of ours. It brings to users the unique design and technology for which the OPPO N1 won a lot of accolades, but in a sleeker and more compact body. For OPPO, a fusion of technology and affection has always been the essence of our product design and development. We believe that today’s youth will find OPPO N1 Mini as a device that is Mini in size and max in fun,” said OPPO India CEO Tom Lu during the launch of Oppo N1 Mini here.

Oppo N1 Mini features a 5-inch HD IPS LCD touchscreen. The device is powered by a 1.6 GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 chipset and Adreno 305 GPU. It runs on Android v4.3 Jelly Bean with Oppo’s Color OS 1.4 on top of it. It has 2GB RAM, 16GB internal storage and a 2140 mAh battery. Priced at Rs. 26,990, Oppo N1 Mini is available in light blue, white and lime yellow colors.

skully-ar-1-helmet

Motorcycle riders are about to get a huge upgrade in how they ride, with the SKULLY AR-1 Motorcycle helmet. It is being referred to as the Google Glass for motorcycle riders, so you have an idea right there on just what this helmet is all about.

The SKULLY AR-1 helmet will basically make you feel like Iron Man, with features such as turn-by-turn navigation, phone connection, music listening, and a wide-angle rear-view camera. The helmet is actually Android-based, but when you watch the video below, you won’t be seeing any card-like UI, but this helmet is definitely a game changer for serious riders. There is an Indiegogo campaign to raise money for this helmet, which they surpassed their goal of $250,00 greatly by already raising over $689,000. Check out the video below and head over to the site if you feel like making a donation.

HTC Desire A11 leaks, might be the first device to use a Snapdragon 410 chipset

HTC Desire A11 Front

HTC is all set to add a new kid in their mid-range Desire family of Android smartphones. According to the leaks, HTC Desire A11 is going to be a mid-range smartphone with a 1.4 GHz quad-core Snapdragon 410 MSM8916 SoC and Adreno 306 GPU. It is going to be the first device to be running on a 64-bit Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 chipset.

HTC Desire A11 Back

The new smartphone will have a 4.7-inch display with a resolution of 480 x 854 pixels and a sharpness of around 195 pixels per inch. It will sport a 5MP back snapper without flash and a VGA selfie camera. It is likely to run on Android 4.4.2 KitKat with HTC Sense 6.0 UI on top of it. While the device appears to be having quite decent hardware, the leaked images suggest that it would lack the dual speakers which are typically a signature feature of HTC’s high-end handsets.

The rumours suggest that HTC Desire A11 will hit the US market first. There is no word on when will it hit the stores globally.

LG’s $3,500 OLED TV is the first one you might be able to afford

Now that plasma TVs are really on their way out, it’s the perfect time for a true alternative to LCD, and LG is ready with its cheapest OLED TV yet. The 55EC9300 is the third generation of curved 1080p OLED TVs to roll out and with a price tag of $3,500, the price has dropped 75 percent since the first one debuted a year ago for $15,000. It’s still pricey for its size, but you won’t have to choose between tuition and a TV this time around. Inside is the webOS Smart TV platform we loved at CES, and of course, the new display technology that is supposed to bring better colors and deeper blacks than have ever been possible before.

The question now, is if the improved colors of OLED are a better option than the high-res 4K screens currently flooding shelves. If the rumors are right, we’ll see a 65-inch 4K version soon that cuts out the compromises, but costs twice as much. You’ll be able to get your own eyes on the screens soon — pre-orders are available through Best Buy and Amazon, and Best Buy will sell the set starting on the 24th.

Square’s appointment booking makes sure that you never miss a haircut

Square Appointments

Booking time at the hair salon or dentist’s can be a decidedly low-tech affair. You often have to do it over the phone, and you may not even get a courtesy call, let alone email. That may not be an issue for much longer now that Square has just launched its Appointments service. The system lets you request an appointment through a simple web form that automatically adds to a shop’s calendar. After that, you can get email or text reminders that will help you arrive on time.

Appointments isn’t necessarily cheap for small businesses. It starts at $30 per month for individual sellers, and scales up to $90 for an unlimited number of staff. However, Square is betting that its technology will help the bottom line even as it helps you — easier bookings and reminders should lead to both more customers and fewer no-shows. It won’t make that upcoming root canal any more comfortable, but you at least won’t have to worry about being late.
