Sprint Abandons Plans to Purchase T-Mobile
Sprint is abandoning plans to purchase T-Mobile US, reports The Wall Street Journal. According to the site, Sprint and its parent company Softbank believe it would be too hard to gain regulatory approval for the deal, with Sprint planning to make an announcement on Wednesday.
Sprint Corp. is ending its pursuit of T-Mobile US, according to people familiar with the matter. The company and its parent, SoftBank Corp. decided it simply would be too difficult to win approval from regulators, the people said.
News that Sprint was working on a potential purchase of T-Mobile US first came in December of 2013, when The Wall Street Journal suggested Sprint was preparing a takeover bid. The deal, which could have been worth more than $20 billion, would have been subjected to significant regulatory scrutiny.
In fact, the United States Justice Department met with Sprint board members to discuss the deal and expressed concerns about the merger. U.S. antitrust authorities reportedly believe that having four national carriers is necessary to maintain a competitive market.
Japanese carrier Softbank purchased a 70 percent controlling interest in Sprint back in 2012, while T-Mobile is majority owned by German telecom giant Deutsche Telekom.
This is the second time a T-Mobile purchase has fallen through. AT&T previously attempted to acquire T-Mobile but the deal fell through after being blocked by Federal Communications Commission and the Department of Justice.![]()

Jack White’s ‘Lazaretto’ Ultra LP is the best-selling vinyl release in 20 years
Since its release in early June, Jack White’s Lazaretto Ultra LP has sold 238,000 copies — making it the most popular vinyl release of the year. That tally also earns the artist’s second solo album the best-selling record of any year since Pearl Jam’s 1994 effort Vitalogy. Billboard also reports that number two on the vinyl sales chart for 2014 is Arctic Monkeys’ AM with 29,000 units sold and Daft Punk’s popular Random Access Memories sold the most in 2013 with 49,000. Of course, Mr. White adds this accolade to a trophy case that includes a Guinness World Record for the fastest release awarded back in April.

US government says someone besides Snowden is leaking secret docs
Due to content of a report from The Intercept, the US government says that there’s a new whistle blower leaking its secrets in addition to Edward Snowden. The article details national security documents prepared by the National Counterterrorism Center dated August 2013 — after the former NSA contractor left the US for Russia. Focusing on databases used to organize suspected terrorists’ identities, the report details one specific repository — the Terrorist Identities Datamart Enivornment (TIDE) — that now tallies a million names. According to The Intercept, 680,000 suspects make up the Terrorist Screening Database (TSDB) portion of TIDE, with over 40 percent (280,000 to be exact) labeled by the government as having no affiliation with a terrorist group. Documents also shed light on how the screening system has expanded under the Obama Administration to include the collection of biometric data (facial images, fingerprints, and iris scans) of watchlisted Americans. What’s more, part of the process included pulling records for every person with a driver’s license in Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin in the time leading up to the Chicago Marathon.

Explore the moon and Mars with Google Maps

It’ll be a long time (if ever) before someone sets foot on the moon again, but you can now go on a few lunar excursions of your own without leaving the comfort of Google Maps. Just pop into the ‘Earth’ view and keep zooming out — once you’ve reached escape velocity and can see our little blue dot framed by stars, a tap on the ‘Explore’ button will proffer glimpses at the moon and our rusty celestial neighbor, Mars. Google added the heavenly bodies to commemorate the Curiosity rover’s second year cruising the Martian surface, and while it isn’t quite as flexible as Google Earth, Maps’ new feature doesn’t require any setup or forethought. There aren’t any Street Views just yet, but there’s still plenty of magnificent desolation to peek at after you’re done plotting your course to the chiropractor.

Fox withdraws its $80 billion offer to buy Time Warner
By now, it’s no secret that 21st Century Fox made a multi-billion dollar pass at Time Warner, only to get unceremoniously shot down by TW’s head honchos. Both companies mostly kept mum after the New York Times first broke the story, but now things have come to a head: Fox has conceded defeat and officially withdrew its $80 billion offer. Had the deal gone through, the resulting content titan would’ve had with enormous sway over the media world — it would have been in control of HBO, Turner’s TV channels (minus CNN, which would’ve been spun off), Fox’s broadcast network, Fox News, and two big-name film studios. Rupert Murdoch clearly saw the benefits of a mash-up, so why back off now?
To hear him tell the tale, Time Warner’s brush-off combined with a sinking stock price just made the deal unfeasible. The decision might not seem like a surprise — after all, Fox said in a statement that it was no longer in talks with Time Warner once word of the talks went public — but some still expected Rupert Murdoch to push even harder for a merger during today’s earnings conference call. Say what you will about the guy: he can drive a pretty hard bargain when it comes to things he wants and Reuters said earlier this week Fox was supposedly gearing up to offer a modestly inflated sum. Even now, some suspect that withdrawing the offer is just another Murdoch ploy, but an unnamed source told USA Today that this is the real deal. We’ll just see about that.

More power, Protection and SD support for your Moto X with new Mugen Power Case
I see a lot of odd, fun, cool, interesting and crazy things roll through my email. Cases and extended batteries are plentiful. Along with a myriad of ways to utilize a micro SD card on devices either wirelessly or through a OTG style plug-in support. However, I can’t recall a time when I have seen all of the above rolled into one product for one device. Mugen Power has apparently made it all possible though with a 2800 mAh extended battery case with SD card slot for the Moto X.
The whole thing looks a little bulky, but you are gaining quite a bit from the added size. Mugen Power goes over a few various things on their page regarding the case, like what you will need on various version of Android to utilize the SD card.
They also mention that you should switch the case off for 1 second before switching to the card.
“Motorola Moto X owners are often reported to complain about short battery life of the device. We worked hard on this project and managed to fit exceptional battery life, additional protection and SD card slot which naturally works with Android into this case. Our solution gives customers added battery life to stay connected longer without recharges and make more with the smartphone than ever before,” says Nikolai Lebedovsky, CEO at Mugen Power.
If battery life and storage space are some of the downfalls of your Moto X, this could be your all-in-one solution. The beefy case will set back your bank account a cool $89.50 + tax and is now available on Amazon. Just hit the link below to check it out.
