3D-printed food could expand the options for hungry soldiers

Marines On Patrol in Helmand Province

In a recent issue of Army Magazine, the possibilities of 3D-printing tech for military use are outlined in great detail. We’ve already discussed the research into crafting mission-specific weapons, but expanding culinary options for soldiers is high on the to-do list as well. Currently, Meals, Ready-to-Eat (MREs) provide 24 rather unappealing options — like the imitation pork rib pictured above — that won’t spoil and still provide nutritional value. Heck, a suitable pizza option just arrived recently, and it lasts for three years. Now, with the advances in 3D-printed food, the Army is researching ultrasonic agglomeration that fuses particles with ultrasonic waves to expand the menu. In addition to constructing meals to suit varied tastes, 3D printing allows the addition of specific nutrients (like protein or vitamin C) to a dish as needed. And the project isn’t stopping there, as printing on-demand with a compact unit capable of using foraged ingredients is within the realm of possibility during missions.

Sony is getting out of the e-reader business

Sony Holds News Conference On New E-Reader Service

Sony announced the closure of its own Reader store in favor of Kobo’s platform earlier this year, and now it seems the company is nixing e-readers entirely. BBC reports that the Japanese outfit doesn’t plan to release another device with last year’s PRS-T3 serving as the most recent option. Thanks to Amazon’s Kindle lineup and a growing number of tablet options, dedicated reading slates have seen declining sales since 2011.

A motorized bike will help you survive the apocalypse

When the apocalypse arrives (zombie or otherwise), you’ll need to be prepared for anything. Part of said preparedness should certainly involve transportation, and thanks to the folks at Motopeds, there’s a legit option. The Survival Bike: Black Ops Edition hits the trail with a compound crossbow, fuel storage, shovel, tomahawk, harpoon, blade saw, climbing gear, lights and a smattering of tools and knives. To keep you on the correct (read: covert) path, there’s a handlebar mount for that trusty smartphone or GPS unit needed to navigate. Unfortunately, there’s no word on pricing, but the company’s regular chassis kit includes everything you’ll need minus the 4-stroke engine for $1,999.

The Big Picture: SpaceX Falcon 9 departs from Cape Canaveral

Before most of us here in the States woke from last night’s slumber, Elon Musk’s outfit launched a rocket into space. The SpaceX Falcon 9 blazed across the sky from Cape Canaveral, Florida at 4AM ET, carrying an AsiaSat 8 satellite to deploy into orbit. Liftoff came just hours after the announcement that the company’s new facility and the world’s first commercial launchpad would be built in Brownsville, Texas.

Motorola acquires fourth largest smartphone market share in India

motorola-logo

Within a year of re-entering the Indian smartphones scene, Motorola has beaten Nokia in smartphone market share, according to analysts firm Canalys. In the second quarter of 2014, Motorola has emerged as the fourth largest seller of mobile phones pushing Finnish firm Nokia – now known as Microsoft Mobile – to the fifth slot.

Lenovo-owned Motorola shipped 955,650 smartphones to India in Q2, while Nokia managed to ship only 633,720 units. In Q1, however, Nokia was on the fourth place with 583,160 units while Motorola had only shipped 379,310 smartphones.

It looks like Motorola’s competitively priced Moto G and Moto E phones have helped the company revive its fortune in one of the world’s largest smartphone market. Motorola has further slashed the price of its hot-selling Moto G by two grand to pit it against similarly priced Chinese and Taiwanese smartphones.

According to the Canalys report, Samsung sold 4.4 million smartphone in India in Q2 while Micromax and Karbonn sold around 3.1 million and 1.07 million units respectively.

Nvidia Shield Portable gets substantial OTA Update

Nvidia has started pushing out a OTA update for the original Shield portable today that carries a pretty hefty amount of changes and file size. The update is simply called OTA 5 Release 82 and weighs in at 158.6MBs in size.

Nvidia Shield Portble

The update adds in quite a few things of importance such as support for the Nvidia Shield wireless controller. That is the new add-on accessory you can get for the Shield tablet. Meaning you can grab the extra controller and connect your current Shield portable to your TV and game that way as well as wireless stream the audio from the Shield Portable to a headset. Nvidia is also replacing the TegraZone app with a new Shield Hub app. You should also see game streaming improvements, Netflix HD support up to 1080p, new onscreen controls and remote GameStream goodies.

If you happen to be the lucky owner of a Shield, be sure to check for the update and get it installed.

Lenovo Vibe Z2 Pro announced with 2KHD 6-Inch Display

Lenovo has been one of my favorite manufacturers for a quite a while. We don’t see much in terms of their phones here in the states, but they are quite large overseas. I always hope that one day they will hit it big over here, which I assume will start to happen once all the Motorola dealings are officially completed. Until then, I can keep an eye on what they are doing and be excited from a distance. Lenovo has just announced their next flagship device and I think it has some great potential. Meet the Levono Vibe Z2 Pro.

Lenovo Vibe Z2 Pro

She looks pretty hot. The Vibe Z2 Pro has a 6-inch QHD 2560 x 1440 IPS display with a 490 ppi (pixel per inch). It is utilizing a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor clocked at 2.5GHz, 3GB of RAM and 32GB on-board storage. It does skip the constantly debated Micro SD card slot though.

The Vibe Z2 Pro also brings a 16MP rear camera with dual LED flashes that is capably of recording 4K video. It runs Android 4.4.2 out of the box and is powered by a built-in 4,000 mAh battery. All of that is packed inside a device that is a metallic brushed -weave unibody that is only 7.7mm thin and weighs 179 grams. It will come in three color variations; Titanium, Gold or black.

The device will be a dual-sim sporting variety and is scheduled for launch in September with a price tag in Russia of about $834 USD.

I would certainly sport that monster if it ever made it stateside at a traditional high-end device price tag. Would you?
