Engadget UK giveaway: win a Pebble Steel courtesy of GeniusFlight
School’s out for summer, and many of you are no doubt looking forward to sun, sea, several strong cocktails and a few weeks off work. Foreign lands are always better enjoyed with a trusted travel companion, and in lieu of actual friends, we’re giving away a black Pebble Steel to fill that role. The second-generation e-ink smartwatch is smaller, classier and pricier than its predecessor, and comes to us courtesy of GeniusFlight: a flight searching site with a difference. GeniusFlight revolves primarily around your budget, which you specify alongside preferred travel dates and departing destination. The tool then tells you where in the world that money will take you, hopefully with some inspiring options you wouldn’t have come up with unaided. As always, any Brits interested in taking a free Pebble Steel on tour can enter up to three times via the Rafflecopter widget below. After they’ve read the rules first, of course.
- Entries are handled through the Rafflecopter widget above. Comments are no longer accepted as valid methods of entry. You may enter without any obligation to social media accounts, though we may offer them as opportunities for extra entries. Your email address is required so we can get in touch with you if you win, but it will not be given to third parties.
- Contest is open to all residents of the UK, 18 or older! Sorry, we don’t make this rule (we hate excluding anyone), so direct your anger at our lawyers and contest laws if you have to be mad.
- Winners will be chosen randomly. One (1) winner will receive one (1) Pebble Steel.
- If you are chosen, you will be notified by email. Winners must respond within three days of being contacted. If you do not respond within that period, another winner will be chosen. Make sure that the account you use to enter the contest includes your real name and a contact email or Facebook login. We do not track any of this information for marketing or third-party purposes.
- This unit is purely for promotional giveaway. Pebble, GeniusFlight and Engadget / AOL are not held liable to honor warranties, exchanges or customer service.
- The full list of rules, in all its legalese glory, can be found here.
- Entries can be submitted until August 8th at 11:59PM BST. Good luck!

DJI’s latest pro-level drone will make you want to upgrade your Phantom
DJI’s Phantom 2 Vision+ is a great introduction to aerial video — we know from personal experience — but it won’t be long before you’re jonesing for more power. If you really want to dominate the skies (or, y’know, use a bigger camera etc.) then DJI’s new Spreading Wings S900 Hexacopter is more like it. In DJI’s family of pro-level drones, the S900 flies neatly between the S1000 and S800 with a max load weight of 5kg and 18 minutes of fly time to cram with epic sweeps — just don’t do them here. It works with DJI’s own Zenmuse Z15, GH3, GH4, and BMPCC gimbles, so particularly good news for Lumix GH3/GH4 and Black Magic Pocket Cinema Camera owners. If you set on hanging with the pros, then expect to pay out like them, too. The Spreading Wings S900 will thin your money clip to the tune of $3,800, but that’s small change for a big fish like you, right? However, if moths are the only thing flying around your wallet, then enjoy vicariously via the video after the break.

UK government wants one huge database to help it run the country
Powerful though it may be, the UK government readily admits that it’s unable to complete even “simple tasks” that require the sharing of data between different departments. Part of the problem, it claims, is down to the various databases that each government department controls. Because there’s no complete picture of what’s going on, no-one can act swiftly enough to fix a problem before it takes hold. Back in April, however, the cabinet’s data sharing policy team proposed a plan that would see local authorities, emergency services, schools and government departments merge all of their databases. The resulting information could then be mined “big data” style to provide more accurate information for policymakers and target help towards those in need.
Another claimed benefit of the plan would be to save up to £37 billion ($62 billion) in waste, fraud and error, by not sending cash out to people who have recently died and then having to claw it back. It’s also hoped that because the government will be able to understand a person’s whole life, it can help them with their money worries. If, for instance, they owed cash to multiple departments, the payments would be structured as to be manageable on a low income. All of this is just a proposed policy, and the Government will now take people’s views to understand if they support the plan. Of course, privacy campaigners are going to be outraged at the news, but let’s be honest — it’s not as if government operatives have ever left laptops full of public records in pubs or anything.

Kogan’s latest phone one-ups the Moto G LTE with a bigger screen
The Moto G LTE offers a lot of smartphone for the money, but Kogan reckons that’s not quite enough value for your hard-earned cash — the Aussie outfit just brought its latest smartphone, the Agora 4G, to the US and UK. Pay the same $219 (£149) you would for Motorola’s device and you’ll get a larger 5-inch screen, an 8-megapixel rear camera and a beefier 2,500mAh battery on top of speedy LTE data (on AT&T) and a quad-core Snapdragon processor. Sounds great, doesn’t it?
Well, we’d be a little cautious before diving in. It’s a big step up from the Agora HD we tried this spring with both a faster processor and that all-important 4G internet access, but it’s otherwise a familiar design — we’d expect the HD’s so-so camera performance and quirky software to carry over. If the Moto G LTE is a little too compact for your liking, though, the Agora 4G is likely to be on your short list of alternatives.

Amazon Fire TV scores live video apps for Disney, MLB and WWE
The launch of Flappy Bird Family last week probably wasn’t going to make you rush to buy a Fire TV any time soon, but don’t worry — Amazon has a few more aces up its sleeve. The Android-powered media hub is now getting a slew of extra apps, many of which expand the video selection to areas that Amazon simply can’t cover. You can now tune into MLB.tv and WWE Network if you need a live sports fix (real or otherwise), and you can entertain your kids with Animal Planet and Watch Disney. If you’re the patient type, you’ll also be glad to hear that NFL Now, Watch ABC, A&E and Dailymotion are due later this year. These additions likely won’t make you chuck your Apple TV or Roku box, but they might get you thinking about a Fire TV if you’d previously ruled it out.

‘NFL Now’ Channel Coming to Apple TV Later This Week [Updated]
While many NFL fans have been hoping the Sunday Ticket subscription service will make its way to the Apple TV someday, the league appears set to make its first foray onto the set-top box with an upcoming NFL Now channel, reports 9to5Mac.
Announced earlier this year for a launch this month, NFL Now is a personalized digital video library of on-demand news, features, highlights and more, as well as live streaming of press conferences and other events, but not games. The new service will be launching across a number of platforms later this month as the 2014 NFL season begins, but Apple TV support had not been confirmed.
Sports content has been a major theme for Apple TV content, with MLB.tv, NBA League Pass, NHL GameCenter, and MLS Live subscription services all available on the platform. Other sports channels on Apple TV include Watch ESPN, action sports channel Red Bull TV, college-focused ACC + Campus Insiders, and cricket channel Willow.
Update 6:40 AM: 9to5Mac now says the new channel will be launching this week.![]()

‘BioShock’ Coming to iOS Later This Summer [iOS Blog]
Award-winning first-person shooting game BioShock is making the transition to iOS later this summer, developer 2K Games tells Engadget. Originally launched in 2007, the game kicked off a trio of successful titles in the series, which is available on several platforms including PC, Mac, and consoles.
While taking BioShock to iOS is a big move for the series, Engadget calls the experience “subpar” as the visuals have been reduced in quality to fit within Apple’s app size requirements for the App Store. In addition the device size itself simply makes the game feel “distinctly less immersive”. The game does, however, play well if users can adapt to the on-screen touch screen controls or take advantage of an external Bluetooth gamepad.
An exact launch date for the iOS version BioShock is yet to be announced, and 2K Games says it will carry “premium” pricing with no extra downloadable content.![]()
