T-Mobile to Expand ‘Un-Carrier 4.0’ Initiative, Offer Switch Incentives to U.S. Cellular, Regional Customers

T-Mobile will expand its recently introduced “Un-Carrier 4.0″ initiative, which saw the company offering to pay up to $350 in early termination fees for Sprint, Verizon, and AT&T customers who switched to T-Mobile. As part of the expansion, first detailed by Re/code, T-Mobile will pay the same contract termination fees for customers currently with U.S. Cellular and a dozen other small regional carriers.

T-Mobile also has plans to entice additional customers by accepting a larger number of handsets for trade-in, including damaged phones, albeit for a lower trade-in credit.

“This is not just a promotion,” T-Mobile marketing chief Mike Sievert told Re/code on Thursday. “What we are trying to do is bring an end to unfair one-way onerous contracts in this country.”

First unveiled last week, T-Mobile’s early termination deal pays up to $350 per line in fees for individuals and families with up to five lines who switch from their current carriers and trade in their phones to T-Mobile.

Under the terms of the program, customers have to leave their current carriers, trade in existing phones (T-Mobile offers up to $300 per trade-in), sign up for a new T-Mobile plan and port a phone number. After the above qualifications are met, customers can send the final bill from their previous carrier (with termination fees listed) to T-Mobile for reimbursement via prepaid MasterCard.

According to T-Mobile, upwards of 80,000 “break-up” letters have been shared on social media sites in the last week by customers leaving their carriers for T-Mobile and signups have increased as a result of the program.

Apple to Begin iPhone 5c In-Store Screen Replacements Next Week

Apple will begin offering in-store screen replacements or repairs for iPhone 5c displays next week, starting on Monday, January 20, according to 9to5Mac.

iphone5c

Apple has begun conducting iPhone 5c screen replacements in a small number of stores in the United States over the past couple of months, but the January 20th rollout will represent a full-scale launch in all of Apple’s retail regions aside from Hong Kong and Canada.

Broken displays that aren’t covered under AppleCare+ will likely cost $149 per device to replace or repair, while displays that are covered under AppleCare+ are likely to cost $79 per device, similar to the pricing structure Apple employs for broken iPhone 5 displays.

In-store replacements/repairs for iPhone 5s displays are still in Apple’s plans and are “coming soon”, though are not expected to roll out next week alongside iPhone 5c replacements/repairs. The moves are part of Apple’s larger shift to lower repair costs.

Tim Cook Asked About Larger iPhone at China Mobile Launch

After nearly six years of negotiations, the iPhone is finally available on China Mobile, which is the largest mobile carrier in the world with around 763 million subscribers. Apple CEO Tim Cook was on hand with China Mobile Chairman Xi Guohua at the carrier’s headquarters store in Beijing at launch, according to Bloomberg.

Cook handed out autographed iPhones to the first few customers before he once again praised Apple’s new cooperation with China Mobile.

“Today is just the beginning of China Mobile and Apple coming together to deliver the best experience in the world,” Cook said as a few dozen people came in to look at the iPhones on display. China Mobile said Jan. 15 it signed a multiyear agreement with Apple containing “broad potential” for future cooperation.

Cook was soon asked whether the next iPhone would launch with a bigger screen, and responded that Apple does not like talking about future projects, but that they are working on “great things” and want to keep them secret because “you will be so much happier when you see it.”

China Mobile is focused on attracting premium customers for the iPhone, Canalys analyst Nicole Peng told Bloomberg, because the carrier is concerned the high subsidy on the iPhone would impact their profitability. Fellow Chinese carrier China Telecom reported a 10 percent drop in net income in the first year of offering the iPhone, largely because of the higher subsidy.

On January 15, China Mobile said that 1 million iPhones had been pre-ordered in advance of launch. Estimates of Apple’s potential iPhone sales have varied from 10-30 million units, with some claiming demand is lower due to satisfaction with China’s other two carriers China Telecom and China Unicom as well as waning interest in iPhone because of increased smartphone choices in the country.

Sony hopes to push Android 4.3 to Xperia T, TX, V, SP later this month

Sony is fast at work on the Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update for their Xperia T, TX, V, and SP smartphones. According to a recent tweet, the handset maker plans to have the software push out beginning later this month and into February. Keep in mind that is will be for the unlocked international models and timing will vary depending on carriers and markets. Seeing as how don’t have any of these offered in the U.S. with a wireless provider, the time frame is up in the air for the models you might pick up through channels such as Amazon.

Sprint debuts Easy Pay program for device upgrades

Sprint, just days after killing off the OneUp program, has introduced a new system to help consumers with device upgrades. Called Easy Pay it allows subscribers to put down a payment and then pay off the device over 24 monthly payments. Once paid off, customers can keep the product or sell it back to Sprint through the carrier’s Buyback program.

“With technology changing as quickly as it does, we know our customers don’t want to wait a certain amount of time before they can switch to the latest and greatest phone,” said Tom Roberts, Sprint senior vice president for marketing. “Now, our customers can get what they want, when they want it – along with a won’t-break-the-bank way to pay.”

Sounds awesome, right? Here’s the rub. The Easy Pay program is only being offered for a limited time and customers must meet qualifications to take advantage. Not quite as awesome as what other carrier’s are doing to be sure. Wonder what T-Mobile’s CEO John Legere would say about this one.

New Game: RoboCop comes to Android for free!

Glu, developers of popular games like Deer Hunter 2014 and Frontline Commando, bring RoboCop to Android.

If you are at all familiar with the movie RoboCop, you’ll know that the intensity and amount of explosions are almost unmatched. Well, not unless you’re talking about the new game for Android. It is complete with robot enemies, drone strikes, and authentic weapons from the movies.

RoboCop Gameplay

The gameplay is very similar to Glu’s other popular title, Frontline Commando. You head for cover, gun down the enemies, and run to the next checkpoint. It has a decent storyline, and you can upgrade your weapons. Right now, the game is a bit buggy, but that’s to be expected from a brand new game.

All in all, it’s very fun. If you’re a fan of free things and RoboCop movies, this game is perfect for you. After all, it’s free!

Nokia Normandy UI Screenshots Leak Showing Part Android Part WP

nokia-normandy-ui-android-windows-2

The Nokia Normandy has definitely become the Bigfoot of devices for 2014, and today we get another look at what the UI may look like. These screenshots are courtesy of evleaks, which he has been our prolific source for this device. Seems that Nokia has decided to design an Android and Windows Phone hybrid UI, so there goes our dreams of having a Nokia phone with just Android on it.

nokia-normandy-UI-android-windows

As you can see from the long screenshots, it looks more Windows than Android. Also, there doesn’t seem to be any Google apps present within the apps, but reports suggest that those apps will be available in the Play Store. There is still a chance that those apps may not work on the Nokia Normandy, simply because this device is rumored to have an OS similar to Amazon Fire OS, so owners might have to side-load certain apps onto it.

So one of these days maybe we will hear about an announcement of this mystery phone. Let us know your thoughts about these leaked screenshots.

Google Now Cards making their way to Chrome on Desktop

Everyone loves the Google Now Cards on our Android devices, but like most things, we more and we want it on our Chromebooks and desktops. There have been indicators that Now Cards would be finding their way to our laptops and PC’s, but until now, they have been a bit elusive.

Google Now Card DesktopGoogle Now in Chrome closely mimics the Google Now experience on Android. Cards will show up to offer up the contextual information like flights, news or weather in Chromes notification center on Desktop. It will use your phones location to pull the relevant information and you will need to be sure that you have the proper locations settings turned on as well as be cross synced with the Chrome browser.

Google Now on Chrome shows a subset of the Now cards you see on your mobile device, which uses your device’s location. You can edit your location settings (Location Reporting and Location History) on your Android or iOS device at any time.

The option isn’t easy to find and does require that you install the alpha Chrome Canary build to try it out. Of course Google will push it to a stable build update for the standard Chrome Browser for everyone eventually. Usually with in a few weeks of it appearing the Canary builds. If you want to give it a shot you will need to download and install Chrome Canary first. Then follow the instructions below to get it running. (Thanks 9to5Google for that)

The feature is hidden by default: enabling now requires toggling a setting in the chrome://flags pages. Going to chrome://flags/#enable-google-now will take you directly to the appropriate setting in Chrome Canary.

It is a great chance and a great way to stay a head of the curve and check out all that Chrome can do now and will be doing by default in the future. Go give it a whirl and let us know what you think about it.
