Canadian Carriers Begin HTC One Updates to Android 4.4.2

The U.S. update was placed on a temporary delay following some “Carrier Certification” that prevented them from making the 90 day deadline that HTC was shooting for. It might be a hit to the carriers and to HTC, but our friends to the north in Canada don’t have to wait any longer.

The Android 4.4.2 OTA update for the HTC One has started rolling out to owners all across the country this morning. Literally, Rogers, Bell, Virgin, TELUS, SaskTel and WIND Mobile are all pushing the update out to their HTC One users. The update weighs in at 585.44MBs, at least for one of the carriers and carries a software version of 4.19.631.9.

HTC One Android 4.4.2 KitKat Update CanadaIf you happen to be one of those lucky owners on any one of those carriers you might want to take a minute to check. To do that you will want a good amount of charge on your device and enough time on a Wi-Fi connection to pick it up. Head into your device Settings –> About Phone –> Software Update. You may or may not have it available yet as these sorts of updates tend to be on scheduled roll outs. So keep your eyes open.

Telenav Acquires skobbler, the Leader in OpenStreetMap-based GPS Navigation

Crowd-sourced mapping and navigation gives Telenav big boost

Telenav announced on Thursday that it has acquired skobbler for $23.8 million in a combination of cash and stock. Based in Germany, skobbler heads up a crowd-sourced OpenStreetMaps application which employs data supplied by the public. Think in terms of Wikipedia for maps; it’s very accurate, highly detailed, and constantly updated. As we might expect, Telenav plants to incorporate skobbler and its team into navigation and map tools, particularly Scout.

“By joining our efforts with skobbler, we will build on our combined successes to bring the best mapping and navigation services to our customers around the world. The benefits of an open source model will provide an enormous opportunity to change the economic models of navigation and other location-based services.”

The Engadget Podcast is live at 12PM (ish) ET!

This week Ben and Terrence are exploring the brave new old world of audio-only podcasting, starting as close to 12PM ET as humanly possible. (You know, sometimes life just kinda gets in the way.) Joseph is unfortunately indisposed, either off working on the pilot for his show about creeping on celebrities or just enjoying a midday cocktail in the comfort of his warm and spartan Brooklyn apartment. But don’t worry, your remaining hosts have plenty to talk about — we’re pretty sure some company bought another company from a third company. Or something like that.

So join us after the break!

Zoom’s H5 brings high-quality audio recording to budget-minded pros

Zoom H5 audio recorder

Are you serious about capturing high-quality audio away from a studio, but not so serious that you need a do-everything recorder like Zoom’s H6? You’ll want to look into the company’s newly unveiled H5, then. While it should match the H6′s audio quality and can use the same stereo microphone add-ons, it ditches two of the XLR /TLS combo inputs in the name of cost; you’ll also find a monochrome display in lieu of the H6′s color panel. The H5 has an analog output for backup recordings, and you can add two more XLR / TLS inputs through a module if your ambition ever grows. Launch details aren’t available just yet, but we’d expect the new handheld’s pricing to slot in between the $299 H4n and the $399 H6.

Canada’s Wind Mobile offers unlimited US roaming for $15 extra per month

Wind Mobile store

Canadians frequently have to pay through the nose to use their phones in the US; at best, they’ll get a paltry 50MB of data per day. They won’t have that problem for long, though, since Wind Mobile is launching an unlimited US roaming plan on February 3rd. For $15 extra per month, subscribers will get to use as much data, text messaging and voice as they like while visiting their American neighbors. This isn’t as sweet a deal as T-Mobile USA’s free basic data, but it’s still a huge bargain for traveling Canucks who’d rather not deal with an outrageous phone bill when they get home.

Red Nexus 5 reportedly due February 4

Rumors of a red version of the Nexus 5 have been gaining steam these last few days and, thanks to a leaked document, it seems to be close at hand. An alleged Sprint memo surfacing yesterday indicates that we could see the red variant within days. Currently available in black or white, this new color should debut in the Google Play Store on February 4, says the doc.  We should assume that pricing remains the same but we’ll wait for something official from Google or Sprint.

U.S. Cellular debuts $50 ‘unlimited’ no-contract plan

U.S. Cellular on Friday introduced a new no-contract plan which offers unlimited voice, messaging, and 500MB of 3G/4G data for $50 per month. Yes, it’s billed as “unlimited” but that’s because you can go over the allotted data. Doing so, however, sees your speeds throttled over the rest of the billing period. You can, of course, opt for the next plan up which provided 2GB data for $65 per month. To learn more about the new no-contract offerings, including the limited time promo, check out U.S. Cellular’s website.

Apple CEO Tim Cook Heads to Ireland to Visit Government Officials, Company Facilities

Apple CEO Tim Cook is currently in Ireland visiting the company’s facilities in Cork and preparing to meet with government officials this afternoon, according to a report from TheJournal.ie. The specific reason for Cook’s visit is unknown, but Apple has maintained a significant presence in the country for several decades.

The CEO of Apple will be meeting with Taoiseach Enda Kenny later today after addressing staff in the company’s Cork office this morning.

Tim Cook spoke to employees in Apple’s Hollyhill premises about the firm’s future plans. The Taoiseach will take a tour of the facility later today and meet with Cook.

Apple, which has 4,000 employees at its Hollyhill facility, has used its Irish base for decades as its home for operations in Europe and elsewhere, with the company coming under scrutiny last year for its corporate structure funneling revenue through subsidiaries located in the country in order to minimize its tax burden.

Apple has steadily increased its workforce in Cork as the company has grown in recent years, and Cook and Kenny are likely meeting to at least help maintain the long-standing relationship between Apple and Irish officials, perhaps with an eye on the company’s future plans.

Earlier this month, Cook traveled to China to help launch sales of the iPhone on China Mobile, the world’s largest carrier.

Protestors Rally Against ‘Candy Crush Saga’ Developer with Deluge of Candy-Themed Games

King, the developer behind mega-hit Candy Crush Saga, was recently awarded a UK trademark on the term “candy” for use in video games and is awaiting approval on a similar trademark in the United States. With Apple in some cases assisting King in targeting apps with “candy” in their names, developers unhappy with King’s IP strategy have responded with a protest that is seeking to flood the iOS App Store with candy-themed games, according to reports from Pocket-lint and Slate.

Organized by the Candy Jam website, the group exhorts game developers to “fight trademark trolling” by making a candy-themed game between now and February 3. The game-making jam is meant to protest the trademark system and King’s aggressive business tactics, and developers have already submitted more than 100 apps with different combinations of the words “candy,” “saga,” “scroll,” “apple” and more.

King CEO and co-founder Riccardo Zacconi says the company is “not trying to control the world’s use of the word candy,” clarifying that King will only use the trademark “to prevent others from creating games that unfairly capitalise on our success.” Zacconi also defends his company against allegations that it released a game, Pac-Avoid, that cloned an existing game from developer Stolen Goose. Zacconi explains the company “should never have published Pac-Avoid” and has apologetically pulled it from its website.
