Google can now say if your internet connection is quick enough for YouTube
Many are tempted to blame stuttering YouTube streams on our internet providers, but who’s really at fault? Google may shed some light on the subject now that it has launched a Video Quality Report. The tool tells surfers how well their providers typically handle YouTube in a given region, breaking reliability down by the feed quality and time of day. Services that properly load at least 90 percent of 720p videos get a “YouTube HD Verified” badge, while those that tend to choke wind up in standard definition and lower definition categories. Only Canadians have access to the report at the moment, although it should reach other countries in time. Wherever it goes, it should help viewers decide whether or not it’s time to switch networks — and it just might spur some companies into making much-needed upgrades.

Motorola Migrate can now shepherd iOS users (and their data) to a new life on Android
If a Motorola device has recently charmed you away from the iPhone, make sure to check out the company’s Migrate app. Moto just refreshed the transfer tool to add iOS support (similar to the one found on MotoMaker), making it easier to transfer iCloud data to Google’s services — so long as you have a supported handset. Unfortunately, it’ll only work with the Moto X, Moto G, Droid Ultra, Droid Maxx and Droid Mini at the moment, and it can only port calendar entries and contacts. Still, those are two things to slash off your list when moving phones, leaving you with more time to worry about transferring all those selfies.

T-Mobile’s ‘Mobile Money’ service blends prepaid Visa, no-fee checking features
T-Mobile’s latest service seems to fit its ‘UnCarrier‘ agenda perfectly, since it has little connection to wireless and doesn’t actually require users to have the company’s phone service. Called Mobile Money, the personal finance product combines a smartphone app (iOS or Android) with a branded prepaid Visa card. Without paying a single fee, T-Mobile wireless customers can deposit checks into their Mobile Money account by taking a picture of them with their smartphone, withdraw money from 42,000 in-network ATMs and reload the cards with cash at T-Mobile stores (non-T-Mobile customers would pay additional fees). There are also no maintenance fees, minimum balances or activation fees.
While many already have free checking accounts with their bank or credit union that offer similar features, this is aimed at people who for various reasons can’t get a traditional checking account, and rely instead on check-cashing or payday loan services that charge high fees. It’s very similar to the service Boost Mobile launched last spring with a similar focus, and T-Mobile Chief Marketing Officer Mike Sievert sys households currently using check cashers can save up to $1,500 per year in fees. What it isn’t however, is a mobile payment service like Isis Mobile Wallet, which it has no connection to. Interested customers can sign up now online or in T-Mobile stores, and next month it will expand to include Safeway locations.

[NSFW] Coitus with Glass: Because now there is truly an app for everything
Do you like sex? Sex. I mean, the physical activity. Coitus. Do you like it? You’re not interested in sex? – excerpt from ‘Partition’ by Beyonce.
The real question is, would you like some tech with your sex?
We knew it was coming, it was just a matter of time and now there is Sex with Glass, a new app created at a Wearables Hack-a-thon in London this past November by a group of college students (because…technology). Sex with Glass, wants to be your go to app for intercourse and promises a ‘completely new perspective’ while wearing Google Glass by giving you ability to see what your partner sees during love making. By simply saying ‘Ok Glass, it’s time’, the app streams your partners point of view into your headset so you can literally watch yourself bang (because that’s what you’ve always wanted right?). You can also add the app to your iPhone giving you a multi-angle perspective (turning you into an adult movie director one step at a time).
Sex with Glass touts a list of simple commands:’
‘OK Glass, give me ideas’ – if your intercourse regimen has become routine, Glass will literally perform a Google search for positions (high-fiving a million angels).
‘OK Glass, the lights’ – because Google just bought Nest. Oh the places this marketing campaign will go!
‘Ok Glass, play *insert music of your choice’ – connects you with your music library (because we all have that one playlist…)
‘OK Glass, pull out’ signaling the end of the evening and all streaming and recording ceases. Glass will put together all the footage and produce a video, which is deleted forever in 5 hours after pulling out (couldn’t resist).
In the past, Google has taken a very strong stance against adult content for Google Glass. In the summer of 2013, the tech giant made headlines when it banned ‘T*$% and Glass’ an app by porn conglomerate MiKandi, that allowed users to upload and share racy content. The app was live for only a few hours before Google shut it down. Google’s terms of service on sexual content state:
Sexually Explicit Material: We don’t allow Glassware content that contains nudity, graphic sex acts, or sexually explicit material. Google has a zero-tolerance policy against child pornography. If we become aware of content with child pornography, we will report it to the appropriate authorities and delete the Google Accounts of those involved with the distribution.
While Sex with Glass has not gone live as of the date of this article, it seems to skirt this very thin line. One can only speculate as to whether or not this app will be approved for use. I, for one, think this is an imaginative aid that can heighten the sexual experience. I am impressed with its ability to turn mild-mannered individuals (read: nerds) into smooth, consensual Quagmires (control for lighting and music) but this may not be for everyone. While speaking to HuffPo, app co-developer Sherif Maktabi says, “Some people find what we do repulsive. But a lot of other people – and I am basing this from the emails we are getting online – really desire to try this. People have fantasies, desires and needs. It’s personal.”
As a glasses-wearer, I tend to not boink with my specs on, but Glass may change my prudent stance. Personally, I’m curious to see how this works, if it’s as smooth as it seems or will it make fornication more awkward? I think there are enough tech nerd couples out there who are willing to try this. Just my opinion. What do you guys think? Is this the modern day version of ‘Masters of Sex’? Are you at least slightly intrigued? You can check me out at Techaeris regularly. Feel free to have it out in the comments and thanks for reading!
Premium channels strike back: Showtime, HBO and Starz say they’re adding subscribers, not losing them
Yesterday the NPD released data from a survey showing fewer US TV watchers are subscribing to premium cable channels, but now the networks say that isn’t true. First reported on the LA Times Company Town blog, spokespeople from HBO, Showtime and Starz refuted the numbers. Of the three, only Starz is publicly traded and reports its subscriber count quarterly, so it has the most detailed stats. While the fourth quarter numbers won’t be out for another month or so, its customer count is at 22 million as of Q3, up 1.2 million from a year before, and 1.9 million 18 months prior.
HBO and Showtime don’t release the same kind of numbers, but point to stats from another market researcher, SNL Kagan that show their subscriber count and market penetration growing consistently over the past few years. According to Showtime, it’s added one million customers per year, each year, for the last six years. Rich Greenfield of BTIG also points to quarterly earnings snippets that indicate recent growth for premium TV channels and considers the results of NPD’s 7,500 household survey to be “misleading/meaningless.” So why the discrepancy? Look at the NPD’s chart, we see it measure the percentage of internet households with premium channels, so it could be skewed by people recently adding internet, but not premium channels. Whatever the case, even as Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, Redbox and the rest expand, it appears the old model of TV distribution isn’t on its deathbed just yet.

[RUMOUR] Is Google readying a Nexus 8 made by ASUS?
Late last year, a lot of noise was made when a suspicious looking tablet appeared on Google‘s own website. While the tablet did somewhat resemble the 2013 Nexus 7, the bezel width suggested that the screen of that tablet was closer to 8 inches. And so began the rumour of the Nexus 8, for which we’ve really not had any evidence to believe it even exists. Until now…
According to DigiTimes, the 2013 Nexus 7 has not been performing as well as its predecessor, the original 2012 model, which has caused Google to change tack and instead move to developing an 8-inch Nexus tablet, aimed at release in mid-2014, which will presumably be called the Nexus 8.
And the rumoured manufacturer of this mysterious Nexus 8? Why none other than Nexus 7 manufacturer ASUS. It makes sense considering the Google and ASUS partnership has already had two successful outings to date. The source of the rumour also suggests that Google may be looking at Intel‘s Bay Trail-T platform to power the tablet.
That’s definitely an interesting rumour to digest: would you be willing to get an ASUS-made Nexus 8 if it were ever released? Let us know what you think.

Apple Partner GT Advanced Recruiting Local Residents for Jobs at Arizona Sapphire Plant
GT Advanced, Apple’s manufacturing partner for its new sapphire glass plant in Mesa, Arizona, has sent a postcard to local residents advertising for open positions at its new facility. A MacRumors reader who lives in Mesa sent us the postcard he received. The new facility is reported to have some 700 employees between both Apple and GT.
The positions are separate from the job openings that Apple posted last week and they are likely for lower-level jobs than the more supervisory Apple roles. Jobs mentioned include Manufacturing Operators and Technicians, Process Engineering Manager, Metrology Manager and more.

Right now we’re looking for people to join the team behind our new state-of-the-art sapphire material manufacturing facility in Mesa, Arizona. If you can bring excellent technical skills and a collaborative approach, we’ll welcome you into a high-performing professional environment where talent and commitment are always well rewarded.
GT Advanced has a full listing of job openings at its Mesa facility on its website, though there is no indication when the factory will begin operation. It is unknown what Apple’s plans for the sapphire glass will be, but it’s possible the company could be examining the material for displays on the iPhone, iPad or perhaps its rumored smart watch product.
Apple uses small pieces of sapphire glass — which provides superior durability and scratch resistance to other forms of glass — to protect the cameras on the iPhone and on the home button for the new Touch ID-equipped iPhone 5s, however this would seem to be an expansion of Apple’s sapphire glass efforts. A report from last year suggested that future smartphones may use sapphire, a crystalline form of aluminum oxide, instead of more traditional forms of glass.![]()
