YouTube gets a daily highlight reel courtesy of DreamWorks

YouTube can already recommend related videos, but it doesn’t necessarily show the best videos; you have to rely on outside help to separate the wheat from the chaff. However, that search for quality clips is about to get a lot easier. The streaming giant is teaming up with DreamWorks to launch YouTube Nation, a five-minute daily show that will highlight its more interesting content, and promises Ultra HD quality for properly-equipped viewers. The production will draw attention to everything from professionally-made series like Video Game High School (above) to amateur footage. While it’s doubtful that the show will spot the next big viral hit, it could save a lot of time for busy viewers when it launches on Tuesday at 11AM ET (new episodes will follow each weekday at 9PM ET) and might just get visitors coming back for more.

Michael Bay’s ‘Black Sails’ hits iTunes, Amazon and YouTube a week before TV premiere

Michael Bay's Black Sails

It’s no longer strange to see a TV series premiere online before it reaches traditional broadcasters, but Starz is planning a truly special internet debut for its latest project, Black Sails. The first episode of the Michael Bay-produced pirate drama will be available for free through a wide range of online portals on January 18th, a week before it reaches conventional TV. Starz will both host the free show itself as well as offer it through Amazon, iTunes, Machinima’s YouTube channel (a first for Starz) and Xbox Video. Charter, Comcast, Cox, Dish and Time Warner Cable will let you watch through their platforms, too. There’s no guarantee that the digital screening will help Black Sails build an audience, but Starz has a second season in the pipeline — the show is already off to a promising start.

HTC One X and One X+ Won’t be Moving Past Android 4.2.2

HTC One X Android 4.4Looks like the 2012 HTC One X and One X+ will be left back on Android 4.2.2 with the Sense 5 package. HTC made the news official in a Tweet response to David O’Rourke asking about if the rumor was true.

For a device that is only 14 months old, it does seem odd that HTC would drop it so soon. Obviously they are putting all their eggs in the HTC One and the various versions that have released more recently. Still, the One X and One X+ are still new enough and customers are still probably pretty far away from an upgrade that they should have put a little effort into it. While we all know the device is capable of supporting KitKat, HTC Sense Skin might be too much for the phones to handle to make a feasible option. It is funny that they offered up an explanation to The Verge that states both devices have been optimized to their potential for their “amazing camera and audio.”

Nokia Normandy Prototype Spotted Again Showing the App Launcher

nokia-normandy-app-launcher

The Android powered Nokia Normandy is turning into the new Android device Bigfoot of 2014. We already had one sighting of the prototype phone that just showed us the Nokia boot up screen. Now, we get a little taste of what the app launcher looks like. Anyone else not impressed?

To give this some credit, the rumor about this phone did state that it was going to be more of a Kindle style phone. The app launcher shown above is a pretty simplified way to navigate through your phone, which could be nice for the average smartphone user. Us Android enthusiasts won’t look twice at this phone, but if some how we can get stock Android on this bad boy, we would definitely consider it.

Another feature to mention about this image, is the fact that on the top left, we see two cell signals which indicates dual-SIM. Nothing wrong with a little dual-SIM, but let us know what you guys think about this image.

Enblink dongle now lets you control your home appliances using voice commands

Enblink dongle now lets you control your home appliances using voice commands

In case you’ve never heard of Enblink, here’s a one-sentence primer: it’s an $85 dongle that plugs into your Google TV box, allowing you to control any Z-Wave-enabled appliance (door locks, lights, etc.) using an app. Got it? Good. Anyway, as of a few days ago, you can control everything using voice commands (Google TV still required). Basically, once you’ve gone through the trouble of creating so-called scenes, like dimming your living room lights, you’ll need to go into the settings menu of the app and add a voice widget to the main screen. From there, you can use commands like “lamp on,” “TV off” and “dim.” The three-minute video below breaks it down nicely — and serves as a helpful introduction to folks who had never heard of Enblink before today.

Rokform adds Universal Phone and Stroller Mounts to Line Up

Rokform created one of the coolest lines of functional cases and charging docks I have ever personally been able to use and see. Some time ago I did a review on the Rokbed V3 case for the Galaxy S3 and the Rokdock for it as well. Extremely well made products with more than one use. This year Roform took to the CES floor with a more universal approach that should help fill the void for your device, or the love you have for your case.

One of the new products will appeal to the tech savvy moms out there who take their little types on walks and jogs. The new Stroller Mount is a universal and adjustable mounting system that will fit on most all major, and minor, strollers on the market. It wraps right around the handle with a simple rubber strap and locks into place. Making it a great temporary solution that is easily moveable to other strollers or similar ’round’ handles or bars.

Rokform Stroller Mount Rokform Stroller MountYes, I know, that is an iPhone. Not our fault. While they are targeting the iPhone toting moms of the world, the actual mount is the same 4 prong connection that is build into all their cases and into the universal adaptor seen below. The Stroller Mount is set at $49.00 and actually includes an iPhone 5/5s case in pink or white.

Of course the Stroller mount won’t do you much good without a way to click your device to it. That is where Rokform went from the usual specific device cases and created a new universal stick on. The stick on universal kit will attach to any flat surface. Add it to your Nexus 7, your Note 3, your Xperia Z or….. Use your imagination. Once it is stuck on, you are done. It isn’t one you reapply. So choose your device and case carefully.

Rokform Universal mounting system close up Rokform Universal mounting system rear imageRokform Universal mounting system sticky image Rokform Universal mounting system Galaxy Tab 2The universal kit gives you the interlocking rear connection for all of their physical mounting systems. It also has the same wondrous magnet that lets you literally stick your device to any metal surface. It quite the unique approach. The full kit, pictured below, gives you the backplate for attaching to the device, the small magnet to place anywhere you need your phone to literally stick too without it being metal and then a multi directional interlocking hub.

Universal Rokform Phone AdapterIt really is one heck of a new addition. Best part, the universal kit is only $24. Outfit every device in your house and have places to stick things for everyone. Pretty epic really.

Go check out the entire line up of gear and swag at Rokform.com.

Aaron Sorkin Completes Screenplay for Isaacson-Based Steve Jobs Biopic [Mac Blog]

Aaron Sorkin, screenwriter of the movie based on Walter Isaacson’s Steve Jobs biography, has completed his screenplay and submitted it to Sony, according to Variety. Sorkin — who is well known for his work on The West Wing and The Social Network, was tapped to write the script back in the spring of 2012.

NewImage
Later that year, Sorkin revealed that he was planning to have the movie take place across three 30-minute scenes, with each scene taking place behind the scenes of a major product launch. He mentioned the launches of the original Mac, the NeXT cube, and the iPod, but it is not known if Sorkin has kept to that plan.

Sorkin has said that biographies have a natural “cradle-to-grave structure” that is very difficult to overcome, but that he was hoping to write something more unique with the Steve Jobs film. The Sorkin/Isaacson/Sony project is entirely separate from the Ashton Kutcher-led film that was released in 2013.

Nexus 10 out of stock on Google Play

For a few months, Google’s 10-inch tablet, the Nexus 10, has only been available in a 32 GB model in the Google Play Store since the 16 GB model has been out of stock, but today inventory has finally run out completely.

Seeing as how Google never replenished stock of the 16 GB model, it’s probably safe to say we won’t be seeing the Nexus 10 (2012) coming back. Hopefully this means that it’s almost time for a new 10-inch tablet, since at the moment, the company is lacking in that option.

There have been plenty of bogus leaks such as those that suggested a new model would be released on Black Friday, then at CES, but all of those rumors turned out to be untrue.

With the Nexus 10 released in November 2012, it missed the yearly update cycle Google usually has with its products. If any more information about a new device becomes available, you can be sure we’ll have it here.

GoDaddy, Microsoft focus on small businesses with Office 365 partnership

Early last year, Microsoft extended its Office 365 subscription service to small- and medium-sized businesses and now it’s continuing that push with a new partnership with GoDaddy. The web-hosting and domain name company will offer Microsoft’s suite of productivity tools to its small-business customers, including the ability to easily connect users’ domain names to Office’s email services. It also brings the full suite of Office’s productivity software, including shared calendars, cloud storage and instant messaging. The move comes a little over a year after Blake Irving, a former Microsoft exec, took the helm as GoDaddy’s new CEO, where he’s focused on expanding its support for small businesses. Office 365 for GoDaddy is already available in the US and Canada and will open up globally later this year.
