Samsung Galaxy Note Pro, Tab Pro tablets leaked ahead of official CES announcement

Samsung isn’t really well-known for keeping secrets, especially on the day that new products are being announced. We’ve all heard of a new line-up of Samsung tablets being announced soon, but it was just a matter of time before they were outed.

Though they still haven’t been officially announced,  thanks to some popular sources we get to know about the tablets a few hours before they’re official. All of these tablets will be announced at the Samsung event later today at CES 2014 in Las Vegas.

This time around, the internals of the tablets are getting the upgrade, and the hardware is pretty much the same as the Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014).

First up is the Galaxy Note Pro 12.2. It features a 12.2-inch 2,560×1,600 screen, and the 8MP rear-facing camera, and a 2MP front-facing camera can be found on all of the new tablets. It has a 9,500 mAh battery, and 32 or 64 GB on on-board storage. The Wi-Fi/3G version has a Exynos 5 Octa processor, and the LTE variant has a 2.3 GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor.

Next is the Galaxy Tab Pro 12.2. This is completely identical to the Note Pro 12.2, except there is no S Pen with this one. Along with the S Pen comes the added software for note-taking and multi-tasking. It will most likely be around a $50 price-jump to get the Note Pro, so if you need those added features, be ready to pay a little extra.

The Galaxy Tab Pro 10.1 has a 10.1-inch screen, and the same resolution as the others. It has 2GB of RAM, 8,220 mAh battery, and 16 or 32 GB of on-board storage. Also, in case you didn’t make the connection, no S Pen with this one, either.

The Galaxy Tab 8.4 has an 8.4-inch screen, and -get this- a 2,560×1,600 screen. This one has a 2.3 GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, and 2GB of RAM.

This is one of the products that Samsung does very well, so it’s definitely nice to see a new wave of tablets come out of the event today.

Sol Republic’s new Relays in-ear buds promises to fit any ear, for any occasion

Sol Republic has just taken the wrapper off its latest in-ear headphones, which it’s calling the first “cross-over” earbuds because it’s designed for both fitness buffs and the everyday commuter. It offers a “FreeFlex” technology that promises a secure, universal fit in any ear due to an adjustable ring around the ear tip, and it’s also water- and sweat-resistant for those of you who like running in the rain. As you might expect, there are also volume controls, a microphone and a button that’ll let you answer calls or switch tracks. As for sound quality, Sol Republic says the Relays are powered by a new I5 Sound Engine that “delivers full sound with balance and details that bring out the best in any type of music.” Just like all other Sol Republic headphones, the ear tips, which come in four different sizes, are replaceable for life. The Relays are available now in black for $79.99 at Verizon stores and the company’s website, and the whole color gamut — black, white, Horizon Blue and Lemon Lime — will arrive in nationwide retailers some time in February 2014.

Netflix confirms it will stream House of Cards in 4K this year, posts full season two trailer

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings just crashed LG’s CES 2014 press conference (we’re sure he was invited) to announce, officially, that House of Cards will be one of the first shows available in 4K later this year. Already shot and mastered in 4K, the show is a natural fit, although it seems viewers will need to use the Netflix players embedded in their Ultra HD televisions to stream this show in the highest quality possible. We’re going to ask Netflix how it plans to fit all those pixels through our skinny internet connections when we get a chance, but for now HoC fans can bite into a new season two trailer after the break.

CyberPowerPC announces customizable Steam Machines starting at $499

CyberPowerPC announces customizable Steam Machine starting at $499

There will be no lack of Steam Machines at this years’ CES, but CyberPowerPC beat most of the other guys to the punch by announcing a pair of models today that start at $499. Both gaming PCs (consoles?) feature Bluetooth, WiFi, USB 3.0, 8GB of RAM and, of course, come bundled with a Steam Controller — a requirement to be called a Steam Machine. The cheaper Steam Machine A is packing a 3.9GHz A6 CPU from AMD as well as a 2GB Radeon R9 270 graphics card. It’s hardly a barn burner, but it should be more than enough to get you through most modern games. The Steam Machine I, on the other hand, boasts a 3.5GHz Core i3 and an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 760 graphics, as well as 802.11ac WiFi. Though, that configuration pushes the starting price up to $699. Of course, being a veteran of the gaming PC industry, CyberPower is allowing customers to customize pretty much every facet of the machine. So, who knows what the price will top out at? Both machines are expected to ship in the second half of the year.

Nissan reinvents London’s black cab again, will launch all-electric model in 2015

When Nissan introduced us to its modern interpretation of London’s black cab more than a year ago, the compact diesel was all but ready to hit the city’s streets. However, the Japanese automaker decided it wasn’t quite finished with its final design, so it headed back to its London studios with feedback from the London Mayor’s office to make it little more, well, iconic. Earlier today, Nissan unveiled the updated version of its NV200 Taxi for London, highlighting its new round headlights and a re-modelled grille in an attempt to mirror the black cabs of old. The new model also ditches diesel for a cleaner 1.6-liter petrol engine and uses LED lights to improve visibility of its orange-lit taxi sign. Nissan says the petrol-engine NV200 will go on sale in December, serving as a key “stepping stone” for zero emission electric version, which could become the capital’s first all-electric taxi in 2015.

Sharp Aquos lineup for 2014 bears 1080p and 4K TVs, a revamped SmartCentral platform and the new Quattron+ Series

We knew an army of TVs would be making an appearance at CES 2014. Accordingly, Sharp has just announced what we can expect out of the Aquos portfolio this year, with new hardware being introduced as part of its HD, Quattron and 4K Series — there’s also the debut of Quattron+, but we’ll talk more about that a little later. As expected, Sharp is placing emphasis on big LED screens: Each model begins at 60 inches, ranging all the way up to 90 inches in the case of the HD Series. Speaking of which, the entry-level Aquos HD will be priced starting at $1,300, offering 1080p at 120Hz, 2D/3D options and Smart TV features. Meanwhile, the Quattron Series, which starts at $1,700, also does 1080p, but at 240Hz, plus it’s equipped with Quattron technology and Sharp’s completely overhauled SmartCentral platform, something the HD line doesn’t have access to.

Those looking to spend a little more will be able to choose from the newly minted Quattron+ or 4K Series, both of which are running the company’s revamped Smart TV software, SmartCentral 3. TVs with Quattron+ (seen above) are sort of a step between 1080p and Ultra HD; Sharp describes them as the “highest-resolution full HD” sets available, noting that the technology “divides each pixel, creating two pixels from one, to deliver 16 million subpixels.” Prices on these are expected to be from $2,300 to $6,000 — this gets you things like 3D, THX-approved sound, Bluetooth and, on the higher-end models, an AquoMotion 960, 240Hz screen. Lastly, the 4K Series, which is likely the most interesting of the bunch and ranges from $5,000 to $6,000, gets you an Ultra HD TV with an AquoMotion 240, 120Hz display, THX 4K, 3D, a duo bass subwoofer and four HDMI 2.0 ports. All in all, Sharp is going to be kicking off the year with a total of 19 different Aquos TVs; the HD, Quattron and Quattron+ are expected to ship in the spring, though there’s no word yet on when the 4K Series is due to arrive.

Grocery stores use Apple’s iBeacon to remind you what you’re shopping for

InMarket's Mobile to Mortar iBeacon in a grocery store

Many of us will occasionally forget to pick up important ingredients when visiting the grocery store, but that absent-mindedness may not be a problem for much longer. A handful of Giant Eagle and Safeway locations are now using a new marketing service, InMarket’s Mobile to Mortar, that relies on Apple’s iBeacon to send proximity-based notifications while you’re wandering the aisles. In addition to offering on-the-spot coupons and rewards, the system can remind you what’s on your shopping list at just the right moment. It can also send an alert when someone adds to the list; if the family runs out of juice while you’re in the store, you’ll know to buy another jug before you reach the checkout line. Only certain Giant Eagle and Safeway outlets in Cleveland, San Francisco and Seattle are using Mobile to Mortar at launch, but InMarket promises more news in the months ahead.
