Samsung Safety Truck brings new look to road safety
Tapping into their expertise in large format displays, in Argentina Samsung has been testing a prototype system for trucks in hopes of improving safety. The Samsung Safety Truck takes a forward-facing digital camera and wirelessly connects it to four large video panels affixed to the back of a truck so following drivers can see the upcoming road and any hazards.
Samsung apparently chose Argentina for testing due to all the two-lane roads in the country and unfortunately, the challenges of passing big rigs which is causing a high number of deaths.
Along with helping overtaking drivers figure out whether such a maneuver is safe, the video panels can also help following drivers better anticipate decelerations due to hazards like animals crossing the road.
Samsung made sure to include night vision capabilities in the camera so the system is effective at night as well as during the day.
Samsung has taken the prototype vehicle out of operation and moved to the next stage of development, which is obtaining approval from various national regulatory agencies around the world. Although Samsung continues to work on the system, it does seem like it may be cost-prohibitive for deployment.
