Easily transfer files to your device with Web PC Suite (App Review)

Transferring files between your Android device and your computer can SOMETIMES be a pain. Usually not when you have at least a USB cable, but there are times that you’re on the go and leave the USB cable behind. Or maybe, you are using someone else’s computer and want to transfer some files between your device and their computer.

Web PC Suite aims to help alleviate any issues that may arise when trying to quickly and easily transfer files. Once you’ve downloaded the app, you will be asked to navigate to the Web PC Suite website so that you can connect your device.

Setup

If you are trying to transfer files between devices, without a Wi-Fi connection, you are prompted to create an account. In order to create an account, you must use either Google, Facebook, or Twitter, and you’re account is created. Once the account is created, and you have navigated to the web site on your computer, you need to sync the devices. There is a QR-code displayed on the web page, and your camera is activated to be able to read it.

Now I ran into my first issue when I tried connecting my Galaxy Note5 to my computer. The first time I scanned the QR-code, the app and the web client just froze. However, the second go-round, everything loaded up perfectly, without an issues. Mind you, I was not using Wi-Fi transfer, instead, I was using the experimental mobile network transfer.

Interface

So you’ve got everything set up and ready to go, now how do you go about transferring those files? It’s actually REALLY simple with the Web PC Suite. Navigate to the file or folder you are trying to transfer and simply drag and drop within your browser, and the file will automatically start uploading.

There won’t be much activity seen via the app on your Android device, and there isn’t even a notification on your device once the file is transferred. So you’ll have to be sure to keep an eye on the web client to check the status of the transfer. The only information that you’ll see within the app on your Android device is the amount of data that has been transferred.

As for the other options within the Web PC Suite application, you really won’t find much. In the top right hand corner, there is a “Store” icon that takes you to an application in the Play Store that seems to just be a random app that was selected. Possibly for ad-revenue purposes. The next icon is the “Contact” which takes you into your account information. From here, you will find your email and your ‘Used Traffic Statistics’. Finally, there is an overflow menu button on the far right, next to your Account Information.

The overflow menu drops down and shows you a few more options. You can head to Personal Hotspot, Settings, Feedback, Help, Share, or About. The others are self-explanatory, but the one that caught my eye was the Personal Hotspot functionality. This option within Web PC Suite seems to make it easier for users to connect their phones to their other various devices from the app. In order to access the Personal Hotspot with your device of choice, you will need to open a specific URL, and enter the login information, then your device is connected to the hotspot from your phone.

What We Like

  • Easy to use interface
  • Able to transfer files over mobile data connection
  • Personal Hotspot functionality built-in
  • No intrusive ads

And not so much…

  • “Store” icon takes you to random apps in the Play Store
  • Connecting can be a little finicky

Summary

Web PC Suite is another option on the Play Store for you to easily transfer your files between devices. Add in the fact that you don’t need to install any third-party software on your computer, and can just do this within the browser, and you have a compelling argument against PushBullet and others. While I’m not sure how long I’ll use Web PC Suite on my device due to the likes of PushBullet, I do know that I’ll keep it there for a little while just to have in case I need to quickly transfer something without PushBullet.

Let us know what you think about Web PC Suite, and if you aren’t using this already, what you use to transfer files, wirelessly, between devices.

Apple Adds New Flyover Locations in France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Japan and Mexico

Apple today added several new Flyover locations to Apple Maps on Mac and iOS, highlighting landmarks and features in several countries in Europe, including Spain, Italy, Germany, and France. Apple has also added a single location in Mexico and two new locations in Japan.

For those unfamiliar with the Flyover feature in Maps, it lets users see photo-realistic 3D videos of select areas, which they can zoom, pan, and rotate through to get a close up look at notable landmarks and points of interest. Some of the locations listed may have been previously available as Flyover destinations, but were just officially added to Apple’s official list of Flyover locations.

The full list of new Flyover additions:

– Angers, France
– Carcassonne, France
– Florence, Italy
– Genoa, Italy
– Pavia, Italy
– Stuttgart, Germany
– Mannheim, Germany
– Neuschwanstein Castle, Germany
– Mexicali, Mexico
– Murcia, Spain
– Nagasaki, Japan
– Shizouka, Japan

Flyover was first introduced alongside iOS 6 in 2012, and over the course of the last three years, Apple has been steadily adding new Flyover locations to the Maps app. As of February, some Flyover locations have been updated with real-time animated landmarks, making the Flyover experience more immersive, and many Flyover locations have an additional City Tour feature that walks users through different landmarks in each city.

iOS 9’s WiFi Assist is killing your data plan

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

If you have data plan with a cap, it’s probably a good idea to dive into iOS 9’s Settings and turn off WiFI Assist. The feature switches an iPhone’s data connection to the mobile carrier when it’s experiencing shoddy WiFi. If you have an unlimited data plan, it’s great –it ends the need to turn off WiFi when the local connection goes south and you can no longer load that hilarious goat video you found. It’s not so great, however, when you have a pretty low data cap and it switches from WiFi to cell without your knowledge. If you’re part of the latter group, head to Settings > Cellular then scroll all the way to the bottom of the page to turn off WiFi Assist to keep your mobile carrier from taking all your money on your next bill.

[Thanks, Kristy]

Coca-Cola is the first company to pay Twitter for custom emoji

Recife Pernambuco Brazil Coca-cola cans with logo in different languages/alphabets.

Hashtag-activated emoji have been invading our Twitter streams for some time now, but would you believe me if I told you that those Star Wars, Dominos and and sport-focused icons didn’t make Twitter a dime? Apparently, they didn’t, but that’s about to change. The company testing out custom “hashflags” as paid advertising — starting with Coca-Cola’s #shareacoke campaign.

Functionally, Coca-Cola’s #shareacoke emoji isn’t any different from the other custom icons you see on Twitter: if you use the right hashtag, the image shows up in your Tweets. Behind the scenes, however, it represents new potential revenue source for the company. Right now, the campaign is just a test — but Twitter’s Ross Hoffman says the program could expand if it does well. “One of our core values at Twitter is #ShipIt,” he told TechCrunch. “The data we get back will help determine the future of what we do with this as a product.”

So, will all your future Twitter emoji be tied to advertising dollars? Only time will tell — but figuring that out is a big deal for Twitter. After all, the company is almost ten years old and it’s still not turning a profit. It needs every advertising dollar it can make.

Leaked Nexus 5X doc reveals full list of specs and features

1

Google is slated to unveil a pair of new Nexus devices at tomorrow morning’s event in San Francisco. The LG-made Nexus 5X and the Huawei-made Nexus 6P will be the two newest additions to the Nexus line, the former of which will be Google’s lower end, more affordable handset. Through a wide series of leaks and rumors we already have a pretty good idea as to what will be announced tomorrow, at least in terms of Nexus smartphones. But if you wanted a few more last minute details before the big announcement, have no fear. Someone managed to leak a product document giving us a few more missing details on the Nexus 5X.

The Nexus 5X will come with 2GB of LPDDR3 RAM

According to the leak, the Nexus 5X will feature a 2.0GHz hexa-core 64-bit Snapdragon 808 processor, backed by 2GB of LPDDR3 RAM. Thanks to a recent Amazon listing, we already knew the device would come with Qualcomm’s 808, though we weren’t exactly sure if the device would come with 2 or 3GB of RAM. We’re sure 2GB will be powerful enough to help the device perform most everyday tasks without a hitch, though we know some users will be a bit unhappy with Google’s decision to not include 3GB.

Nexus LogoDon’t miss: Nexus 5X (LG-H790) passes through the FCC20

The 5X will also sport a 12.3MP rear-facing camera with an f/2.0 aperture, IR laser-assisted autofocus and a broad-spectrum CRI-90 dual flash. Google says the camera’s larger 1.55 μm pixels will be able to capture more light than the Nexus 5 and 6 cameras could, even in the dimmest conditions.

There are a few more specifications in the leak that we haven’t covered quite yet, which you can find attached below:

nexus 5x specs

Along with the big list of specifications comes a product listing for the device, which looks like something you’d see on the Google Store. One of the images gives us a slightly better look at the 5X’s rear-mounted fingerprint scanner which will be able to unlock your phone and give you access to certain applications, such as Android Pay.

XW1u8GD

You can find the additional product listings at the source link below. Android Authority will be covering tomorrow’s Nexus event, so stay tuned for more details. For now, though, tell us – how do you feel about the device sporting 2GB of RAM? Is this a deal breaker, or are you okay with it?

Apple Releases Xcode Update With Fixes for App Thinning Bugs

xcode-6Apple today released a 7.0.1 update for Xcode, and according to the release notes, the new version of the software include fixes for bugs related to App Thinning.

Last week, Apple notified developers that App Slicing, an App Thinning feature, was unavailable for iOS 9 apps because of an issue with iCloud backups. It appears the update for Xcode may fix some of the issues that prevented App Slicing from being made available to developers.

App slicing is currently unavailable for iOS 9 apps due to an issue affecting iCloud backups created from iOS 9 where some apps from the App Store would only restore to the same model of iOS device.

When a customer downloads your iOS 9 app, they will get the Universal version of your app, rather than the variant specific for their device type. TestFlight will continue to deliver variants for your internal testers. App slicing will be reenabled with a future software update. No action is needed by you at this time.

App Thinning is designed to decrease the size of iOS apps, saving valuable space on iPhones and iPads. With App Slicing, users only need to download the app assets that are designed for their particular device, rather than a full set of assets for a wide range of devices. For example, on an iPhone 6s, a user will only need to download iPhone 6s specific files, ignoring larger iPad artwork and lower quality resources for earlier iOS devices.

App Thinning also incorporates on-demand resources, allowing iOS apps to download content from iCloud only when necessary. A game with 100 levels, for example, might not download levels 30-40 until a user reaches level 20, with content for levels 1-10 removed at the same time. On-demand resources cut down on initial app install sizes and keep apps from eating up too much storage space on devices where space is at a premium.

Xcode can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for free. [Direct Link]

iPhone 6s Uses Different-Sized A9 Chips From Samsung and TSMC

Ahead of the launch of the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus, there were rumors suggesting both TSMC and Samsung were developing Apple’s A9 chip for the device. There was some confusion over how the split would work, because the two companies used different technologies – TSMC was rumored to be using a 16-nanometer process while Samsung used a 14-nanometer process.

Chipworks has now confirmed via several iPhone 6s teardowns that the new devices do indeed contain application processors from both Samsung and TSMC. Comparatively, the die size of the Samsung processor is smaller than the die size of the TSMC processor.

a9chipsiphone6s
The APL0898 chip was developed by Samsung and measures in at 96 square millimeters, while the APL1022 chip manufactured by TSMC measures in at 104.5 square millimeters. Chipworks suggests Apple’s decision to use processors from both companies points towards “major sourcing problems,” but over the last few years, Apple has opted to diversify its supply chain to prevent manufacturing hurdles that can potentially lead to delays.

It is not yet clear how the size difference between the chips will affect the performance of the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus, but Chipworks plans to benchmark each of the processors to figure out whether iPhones equipped with Samsung chips and those equipped with TSMC chips perform differently.

A 2nd-gen Chromecast device and Chromecast Audio could show up at Google’s event tomorrow

google_chromecast_box_TA

It looks like the LG-made Nexus 5X and Huawei manufactured Nexus 6P won’t be the only devices showing up at Google’s event tomorrowAndroid Police is reporting that the Chromecast will see its first refresh, according to trusted sources.

Codenamed “Earth,” the dongle will have the same design as the original device, only come packed with a few more features, such as 4K compatibility and improved performance. It’ll also come in three new colors–Black, Lemonade, and Coral. This refreshed Chromecast should retain the $35 price point.

new-chromecast

Interestingly, Google is also rumored to show off a Chromecast Audio device. This dongle will have an 1/8″ headphone cable to add Cast for Audio Wi-Fi capabilities to speakers, televisions, car stereos, and obviously much more, according to a leak from 9to5Google.

There aren’t many details, but if this rumor holds any weight, we’re less than 24 hours away from seeing what the new Chromecast and Chromecast Audio is all about.

The Chromecast app for Android is also expected to go through a major revision, putting content discovery at the forefront. In this revision will be a new search function enabling users to explore Chromecast-compatible content from applications you have installed, such as YouTube and Netflix. There’s also a “What’s On” feature that’ll automatically pull content and present it to the user. You could look at it as the wild card of content discovery.

Suffice to say, tomorrow’s event is turning out to be much more than just a Nexus refresh.
